Jack Buchanan

Do you think he could and would be good in the back row? Thoughts guys?

No, definitely not. I don't think of him very highly in the front row either.

I dont seem to see the same potential as others seem to. Hopefully its there and Im just missing it, but personally I dont see him as FG standard (yet), and has a long way to go to get there. He has had a few good digs this season granted, Im not taking anything away from him, he puts in his best, but his current good games need to be his average weekly back to back efforts, and his exceptional games need to be a step above that…

Not a backrower for me hasn't got a good offload in his game . I'm still undecided about this guy , tries hard but doesn't offer enough for me for NRL standard , I know he's only 20 and still young .
I'm living in hope that maybe in 2 years he will be a very top 1st grader , to his credit his had to learn his trade without a lot of experience around him (when you consider all the injuries we have had).

Buchanan was thrown into the deep end before his time, at the start of the year he really wasnt expected to play much NRL at all….goes from that to starting prop in many games.
Been a long year for him....starting to feel the pinch now imo.....hes done OK

He is only 20\. Yes, the grind of the nrl is getting to him. But he will be much better for the experience and I expect him to have a big pre season and will be ready to fire round 1 2014.

he had to carry a lot of work load for someone so young into their career
compare him to groat who was in the same situation
buchanan for mine has survived better
in the perfect world he would of come off the bench this year to help in the middle third of the game, but form the get go he was forced to play big minutes, often starting. that's a big workload for some young and first year in first grade.
granted his runs are ineffective and he folds at the line rather then bending it, i think if he is there next year (which i think he will be off the bench) it will be a big improvement year for him, if he goes back to juniors he will return to first grade in a year or two and will be all the better for it. front row isnt a young blokes spot, the experience he has gotten this year will be golden for his future, a few more years of growing and bulking up and he will be a fairly good prospect.
but backrower he is not due to his stopping at the line and non offloading abilities. he simply catches the ball and runs straight. front rower all over

I don't rate him at all. He has no leg drive at all and no aggression.
Being a solid tolier is not going to win us a comp

Exactly. Done well under the circumstances .

He'll only get a better after a very tough season as Ink says. He's young, he'll put on a few more kilos over the next couple of years and his strength and leg drive will improve as well. He's got a pretty good motor and probably needs to work on his mobility more than anything. His leg speed isn't the best but that can be worked on.

Was never a forward, but I think leg speed is to do with fast twitch versus slow twitch muscle fibers. that's primarily genetic right? correct me if i'm wrong.

I take my hat off to him …. I expected very little and got a whole hearted young bloke having a go ..... And doing well under the circumstances .... Well done on a good first season.

Michael Weyman was considered the slowest front rower in the game while at the Raiders, but I reckon his speed improve noticeably at the Dragons. I reckon it can be done, but will take a lot of work.

The difference between lock and front row these days is not much.

He moves very well laterally and has a good engine. His weakness is he offers little impact with his carries.

I suspect playing lock carrying the ball later in the count (after 1 or both props had a run) would make it easier for him and he could be quite handy.

It is not the worse idea for me.

In running you are 100% correct, leg speed is mostly related to your fast twitch /slow twitch fibres that are difficult to alter significantly.

However in football leg speed usally refers to the stride rate after contact, which is actually not quite the same thing.

It can be a learnt skill, essentially revolving around shortening your stride, taking more strides and being in stronger position for a higher percentage each stride. There is more emphasis on this in rugby given the time in contact is greater.

Strength must also have a fair amount to do with effective leg drive?

He does show that when fresh but it quickly disappears then he goes into a surrender mode. If we can get our starting pack on the field and keep it there, next season will be a lot easier for him.
