JACK WIGHTON TO TEST MARKET OFF CONTRACT 2020

G'day @tigerap: as a prev poster said, Wighton has been a naughty boy in the past, so there is a possibility he may be naughty again.

Mbye has a clean sheet and is a good living family man.

If Wighton is getting $900k a year he is doing very well financially, so leave him at C'berra.

I'll take Mbye any day thank you :fa-smile-o:

My understanding re: Jack Wighton situation. His deal is staggered and the last year - 2021 - is worth upwards of 900k plus car. He has split with agent who did that deal, which at the time and still is astronomical.

Sense is this is designed to test his worth, but also to strike new deal with Raiders which means his new agent would get commission from 2021, rather than his previous agent who did all the work and got him a ridiculously good deal

I thought Simple Jack was rubbish as a fullback but he definitely grew into a quality 5/8 over the course of the season. He's one of the better halves going around based on form this year and is in the prime of his career. He's worth something commensurate with that status, with some discount applied for his being a simpleton. $750K plus a year depending on how desperate the buying club is. I don't want to cheer for him so I hope it isn't us...I also feel like it would be a distraction to the rest of our squad to have to keep reminding him which direction he is supposed to run in.

@WT2K Raiders seem to be in a bit of a predicament if the $900K figure is correct looks like they couldn't afford to cut him loose earlier with the problems he had I think he's a much better 5/8 and his from warrants the high ended salary his on you wouldn't think he would take much less in siging a new contract should make for some interesting negotiations

I think he is an outstanding player who has realized his potential this year and has played very consistently. He'll only get better at 5/8th.
It does sound like inflated money, but that's what you'd have to pay to get him out of Canberra.
Considering we had more than that money on the sidelines for most of the year, I don't think its crazy to invest that much in a player of his calibre. I Hope we have a crack at him.
I mean c'mon guys Mbye is on what $800k. Now that's overs for what he has delivered.
I would gladly pay an extra 200-300k to have Wighton over Mbye.
Solid defender, strong ball runner, bit of mongrel, versatility and now showing the right attitude - basically just hit his prime and he has delivered week in week out.
He's the type of player the Tigers need and I wouldn't care if he cost us over a million.

If you're using Mbye as the standard by which to judge potential signings' value I'm bloody glad you aren't in charge of recruitment. It's like saying: "I paid someone $1,000 to build my shed, they did a crap job and the shed fell down in a month. Therefore if I pay someone else $1,200 to build a new shed and it lasts two months I have got good value."

This is probably Wightons best opportunity to secure his most financially rewarding contract. If you want quality players in their prime, you need to pay for them and at least get their best footy. Would rather take a risk with that then pay what they use to be worth only to get them when their best is past.

Jack was always a very good player with genuine pace, size and defence. To think he can be recruited from Lucknow into the Raiders' system gives me hope we will discover a few gems.

the only player I would spend 1 M + is Taumalolo or Tedesco,
re Weighton, we will find a few better values for money.
After that, I would look at Taukeiaho, Arrow, Papali, Kikau or Taupau, at 700K max.

Tbh I’d rather pinch sezer, cotric or simonson

More chance I'll pinch Jessica Alba's behind than us pinching anyone from the Raiders worth mentioning

I think him and the raiders will flop next year.

It's actually a fairly safe bet. They were good but not outstanding in the regular season, were reasonably injury free and won two very close finals matches. Their halves are good but not great, a number of their players are going to need upgrading and they're not likely to add significant talent. If I had to guess now I'd put them 7th next year.

I think the Raiders are laden with talent with few weaknesses. Best dummy half in the game and a real solid spine. Papali was close to the best forward in the finals series. They have a couple of cap challenges but so do all clubs. I expect the Raiders to be not far off again next year.

Sezer leaving with another pom coming in aswell. It wouldn't be the first time Stuart got a club going well only for it to all turn ugly.

If Wighton is on $900K and a car at the Raiders next year, then they are going to be in all sorts of Salary Cap issues going forward.
