Jacob Liddle #198

Im a fan of Simpkin and hope he comes good but he didnt play well in the trials, doubt he was hooked because of it but maybe just to ensure the next hooker in line also doesn't risk an injury

Yeah someone mentioned about coming off a shoulder reco.

He played pretty safe.

He made 19 tackles in a 20 minute stint , probably not his fault when he came out everone kept dropping the ball and all he did was defend and after his stint the roosters ran out all their reserve graders and made it easier for Rua and Madden

It’s bad luck on bad luck for the young Liddle.
He desperately needed to shop window his game for all to see …. as I doubt he was in clubs plans for 2023.

I'm not overly rapt in peaches delivery, I've watched a lot if his games since his signing and he's best suited to roaming.
Rua on the other hand gave some beautiful passes from dummy half but fear he might not be able to play big NRL minutes.
Jake is also finding his way back into first grade.
We'll be ok.
Peach threw a couple of shockers. He'll be ok in a pinch

I think we are in a bit of trouble with the hooking role.

Next year we will have a heap of hookers, unless someone finishes up with us and moves on for another opportunity.

Simpkin is promising but needs more time in cup. I think he maybe only lasted 10 minutes on Friday, then Rua was brought on.

First game back of course he is going to get gassed but to be playing round one after coming back from an injury could be a tough ask.

As a defender he can be a bit lazy, as an 'A' defender and at marker he was caught out a few times on the weekend and most memorably was against the rabbits when burgess went through to score the match winner.

It's a worry. Peachy isn't looking as fit as he was last year and to play him at hooker could be a bad move, you need the hooker to give good service and he hasn't shown that yet. Ball has gotta be thrown in front not behind the runner.

Rua would be a great one to come off the bench but untried at first grade might be a bit of an ask and really can't be played cause not in the top 30.

Throw a spanner in the works.

6. Hastings
7. Madden
9. Brooks

Then have someone like Jake simpkin come off the bench.

how did it make it easier for rua and madden
Rua was playing against state cup players, isnt he flegg level ??
madden wouldnt have had it easier hes not a 1st grader they were on his level

simpkin is wayyyyyy to good for state cup but hes not full nrl level a bit like some of the roosters side

Need to promote Rua to top 30 before round 1 to share duties with Jake.
The temptation will be to put peachy or even Hastings in there for a spell, but imo those kinds of stop gap moves end up weakening two positions, we need peachy playing 13 or 14, plus his service from 9 was sub par and can't afford to be moving Jacko around looked too good in the halves.
The kid looked good enough to me and if you're good enough you're old enough

Really bad luck for Lids, feel for the young bloke. This puts a lot of pressure on combinations that they’ve been working on through the preseason so I hope they make minimal changes to cover his injury.

What I think would work is start the game with Simpkin at hooker and Peach at lock as the third playmaker which still gives us a strong middle defensive structure.
Simpkin isn’t an 80min hooker at this stage so have Madden on the bench to cover hooker and then three big boppers with him. Bring Simpkin and Peach off together and replace with Madden and a big boy.

This allows Madden to still be attacking but the extra big forward gives us a strong middle defence.

I think that gives us a balanced team without compromising too many combinations that have been worked on over the offseason.
Anyway just a layman’s view on how it “could” work.

I agree. Rua certainly didn't look out of place and had that X factor vibe about him. Liddle is just far too injury prone to be playing 1st grade, let alone hitting it with the big fellas in the middle. Really feel sorry for Jacob but it's the reality if the situation.

For mine, the impact that Harry Grant had when he played 9 for us showed that there was daylight between him and Liddle.

While I have sympathy for what the bloke has been through and wish him a speedy recovery, it's time for us to cut our losses and move on from him.

Rua isn't ready. Yeah he looked great but let's put this into perspective.

He lasted 10-15mins in both trial games then got subbed off whilst playing against mostly reserve grade quality players. If he was ready he would've played out the rest of those halves. Sure his ball delivery was good and he ran with gusto but he also was a major ball hog which he would get eaten alive by a NRL side. He has alot to learn and NRL shouldn't be his stomping ground yet.

Jake is coming back from injury and will struggle to last 60mins in the NRL let alone doing that week to week at the start of the season. If someone gets injured his time will extend on the field.

Backup hooker will be needed for 20-30mins of the game. If someone gets injured it will be greater. Rua isn't ready or the answer for that gap. It's Peachy, Hastings or heck even Brooks that are the only ones who can step into the hooker role if needed.

Rua's name - Isn't in our squad...
How does anyone think he's playing at some point.
Rua this, Rua that.... He's not in the squad yet - Might as well throw Cameron Smiths name up...
Train and Trialists can play after Rd10... (That's if he's even still here)
Comps all but over for us by then if we don't get a good start.

Jake's a long way off...
Agree about Jake. Hope not too much reliance is placed on him at this stage.
