Jahream Bula #269

A fair few clubs have options of multiple cars, apartments (live or rent), boats, crypto and other cash income/investment options.
All clubs have multiple cars. They are allowed to lease 5 cars for players outside of the cap.
Similarly, players often have housing provided but it is usually included in the cap cost. Temporary accommodation costs outside of the cap can be provided with NRL approval (which usually is approved for a few months of any relocating players).
Have not heard of boats being included since Storm got done for them.

Additional cash incomes are what makes up that about 200k per club, that is primarily what the TPAs are.

Investment options are above board, provided the player is putting some of their declared salary into that investment (and I guess also not breaching any insider trading laws). Players can not be given investments as part of their payment. Also ask some of our former players about trusting our club with investment opportunities.

I'm not saying there is not more incentives/payments, perhaps Crypto as you suggest, happening but they would be illegal payments, not TPAs. So, if we're paying 500k+ outside of the cap, were most likely breaking the cap rules, as I suspect most clubs probably are in some way. Though I do doubt it is to this degree, as I don't think there is enough interest from outside sources to sink significant cash into salaries.

Bula has been our fullback for 3 seasons now. Hodgo in his ear for 3 seasons.
Every year we see some small improvement in attack; but IMO his overall game has plateaued.
No plan of his own to extend his natural speed with kicks, cut out passes, try assist for others to score.
Walsh from same age and background has so many more options in his game other than the occasional chime into the backline.
Hunger for the ball. Explore other options. Don't think coaches can instill that, it comes from within.
Unless he takes it upon himself to try something different, we will not see anything different.

I think he has made significant progress each year, and this season had several pretty damn impressive try assists, as well as finishing off what was the tigers' best try this year (length of the field one).

Also think his defence and positional play is actually very good.

I think there are too many comparisons and expectations being reached for. He's not Walsh, he's not Tedesco or Papenhuyzen.

And he doesn't have to be.

He's a different type of fullback; I'd say more the traditional, support/hole running player than the contemporary 'second 5/8th' everyone wants them to be. The tigers already have Luai, Api, Latu and Doueihi as playmakers....

They had a pretty disruptive '25 that could very likely have hurt their ability to implement movesets that capitalise on the type of player Bula is.

Put him through a gap at top speed; that's the key to unlocking him in attack.

Get the line break assists to him and they could become a pretty high scoring team.

I really hope this extra sprint training with Roger Fabris is what hes been missing...an extra yard of.pace will do him a world of good.
Add.another off sesson youd think he would.bulk up slightly but not at the detrimemt to his speed, should assist in improving his defence as well.
Lets hope.he remains injury free for the rest of the Pacific Championship and.off season

Injury free for a couple of seasons would be great.

Just a point of interest, how often does Bula touch the ball in a game? Any stat's. for fullbacks.
Ie. Compared to Teddy and Edwards? They seem to be on the ball relentlessly.
I agree, and for those that are gushing about his 4 first half tries vs the Cook Islands should take into account the calibre of the opposition and the fact that he put the cue in the rack and virtually went missing in the second half.

Even more of a concern is his defence which has really dropped of since his debut, which at the time was the stand out feature of his game.

Once again, taking into consideration the calibre of his opposition in the Cook Islands side I would think that there should be some concerns about his 70% tackle efficiency which include 3 missed and 2 inefficient tackles.

Now before people get too defensive of him, I will be the first to admit that we are a much better side when he plays, but at this stage to class him as an elite player is way too soon because he has a damn lot of things to rectify in his game before he can claim that title and the dollars that go with it.

The entire Fiji side racked it in the 2nd half...not just Bula.
Its been well documented the flaws in his game...defense support involvement.
Hes only just cracked 50 NRL games which was Sheens' marker for developing player <-> fully fledged NRL player...he has a lot of improvement in him still imo and much of that is reliant on the teams improvement

Yeh, it's his speed off the mark he would need to improve on to become the tackle buster type.

I'm not sure he has the fast twitch muscle fibres for it to be that effective though as he is a different body to Walsh, Paps, Teddy.

He's 6'2". I'd be going the bulk a bit more route while watching his pace.

More muscle, keep the pace and you've got better than what Latrell should be.

And him getting more involved.
Hands on the ball, not just a spectator.
Coaching is over, try putting it into practice----more often.

Like most FB's they all play better and are more involved on the back of a team that is going forward and winning the field position. They are all exposed in D and some of the better ranked ones defence is definitely not a strength. At 23 he is not close to reaching his ceiling.
I swear our fans every time it looks like a player is looking at options look for reasons to convince themselves that they are not worth it or we can get better.

Back in those teams eons ago, there used to be weekly kicking duels by the respective full-backs.
But that was when TV was black and white.
A lots changed (thank goodness) so I'm mostly all-in with the way footy has evolved (except for the inconsistent refereeing and the bunker) - but full back play and the entire back three are a whole new ball game with very different approaches and responsibilities.
Like, for example, when does Teddy kick? Sometimes, and more as a grubber.
The kick, the pass, the dummy, the shimmy, the pace, the vision - all and more are attributes of a class full back.
Actually was before they had league on tv. The last one I can remember was at the old Cumberland oval in 63/64 between Ken Thornett and Ken Bray?

There were kicking duels since then...I remember watching seeing them occasionally in the 70s. I couldnt understand at the time what the point was

Gee that goes back a way Shoes. I remember Ken Bray very well from the Wests sides of the late 50s and 60s. He was a very good fullback. Just checked up on him - he's 88 and still going. He also played 2 games for Balmain.

Last I remember it being a reasonably regular thing would have been around the early to mid 70's.

I always put it down to being a rugby Yawnion influence, but here is one that actually dates back to the State of Origin in the 90's. But I am sure there must have been a few since.

like you I could never see the point (probably a chance for the forwards to have a breather) and I'm sure we had better duels at school playing forcings back many years ago.

Have always Loved it. “Can Yoou Diiig it!

I’ve even used the “I’m gunna turn you into a popsicle” line when a bloke at the GI carpark thought his bat might help him.
Yes, that was when they were chased by the clowns in the white outfits with baseball bats and painted faces.

Always thought it would be a good movie to remake, it had such a cult following.
