James Gavet and Matt Groat to miss start of season

Wests Tigers will head into the NRL season without forwards Matt Groat and James Gavet through injury.

Groat suffered a toe injury during an opposed session at Concord Oval last week. The latest diagnosis shows Groat may spend up to 10 weeks on the sideline.

Gavet (pictured) is out with a foot injury following an off field accident and could be out for between five to six months.

Wests Tigers NRL Head Coach Mick Potter described the injuries as unfortunate.

“It is just an unfortunate thing that has happened. Matt and James were looking okay at training too,’’ Potter said.

“Matt got his ankle, foot and toe caught in the ground and got some weight on the back of it.

“He had been working hard and his shape was looking better too. These things just happen when you are playing contact sport.”

Potter said the enthusiasm Gavet had shown since joining the Club prior to the Christmas break had stepped up another level.

“I like some of the things James does,’’ Potter said.

“He still has got a few things to work on. James is quiet on the field and needs to get a little more vocal. He is still feeling his way with what we are doing here.

“Both Matt and James are understandably shattered by these cruel injuries but they now need to attend to their rehabilitation with professionalism and discipline.

“We'll support them all the way and I'll be looking for them both to make their contributions to our season later in the year.”

10 weeks for Groat is not too bad considering the season is still a good 5 weeks away, so he should be back reasonably early. 5-6 months for Gavet puts him back around June/July, or anywhere from rounds 13 to 17 hopefully.

Ah great, just great! We're already light on in the prop dept and now 2 of them go down long term before a bloody ball has been kicked!

Why share info & detail on how one injury occurred and not the other….especially as they say one occured at training and one an off field accident.

Just leads to speculation imo

WTs media seem to have a lot of learning to do.....been hammered on FB a few time by fans

Perhaps because one injury occurred during "work" whilst the other didn't and how it actually happened is none of our business..

But they made it our business by posting the limited info we do know on their website.

You trying to tell me - hypothetically - Benji falls down stairs at home (away from ''work'') and does an ACL, is out for the year and its all 'none of our business'????

LOL

Sorry.

Fans do have the right to know on issues like this.

Fans certainly do not have a 'right' to know.
However, because of the way WT media have dealt with it they have built up an understandable 'expectation' that we will be told. That's very ordinary media management.

But at least they have improved since they started reading the forum. Hello Wayne…Happy Australia day.

Disappointing news, particularly about Gavet who I think will be a handy asset.

The only positive is we could have two fresh forwards ready to go when other injuries might hit.

Good point Helmesy if we can keep the props on the field until these blokes get back we might get a blessing in disguise

You could always voice your concerns to the club Ink, if it bothers you so. I'm not sure any of us have a satisfactory answer on here to be honest. I just hope both players recover as well as they can and get back on the field.

I disagree. If it didn't happen at training, then the circumstances are none of our business. The injury has
happened, Gavet needs surgery to recover. End of story IMO.

Past experience may be a dictating factor.

If you remember Kidwell doing his knee tripping over his kid. That was publicised and a scumbag element hurled abuse at his family for it.

95% of our fan base would read it, be thankful for the details and move on. It is the 5% who tend to dictate policy though because they are rabid morons without a clue about how one should carry oneself

_Discussion_ forum willy…is that OK?

It was a hypo....wasnt expecting an answer....just highliting the difference & hypocrisy between a fringe and marquee player

Robbies mum was none of our business either

Hope we are in a good position when these two players come back from injury, we have been short of Props for a couple of years now. I cant work out how a lot of our injuries are not one or two weeks but seem to be eight weeks or more.

Of course it is ok Ink. You don't need to add the sarcasm to make your point though, it's not really necessary. So you're not entirely happy or satisfied with how the WT media release information… Fair enough, I know they're not going to please everyone, but they did state Gavet's injury was not training related. What more do you want them to say? As a fan, I consider myself on a "need to know" basis when it comes to information disseminated from the club. They dictate what to release to the media and fans, when and why. Some people may want to question it, which is fine. I'm not one of them, that's all.

Ironic.
The sarcasm was in response to your own somewhat sarcastic comment:
