James Roberts’ career is at the crossroads with the South Sydney and former Broncos star checking himself into a rehabilitation facility.

News Corp can reveal Roberts admitted himself to rehab two weeks ago following private discussions with South Sydney officials including chief executive Blake Solly and coach Wayne Bennett.

The Rabbitohs are rallying around Roberts and will release a statement Tuesday confirming his stint in rehabilitation.

It is the third time the former NSW Origin ace has sought professional help after two previous visits to an overseas rehab facility in Thailand to address issues with alcohol, anxiety and depression.

Souths officials are deeply concerned for Roberts’ emotional wellbeing and have been providing support over the past 14 days.

It is understood alcohol abuse is not at the core of Roberts’ current situation, with the 27-year-old instead dealing with some personal demons.

Just 12 months ago, Roberts was thrown a lifeline by the Rabbitohs and Bennett, his former coach at the Broncos, after falling out of favour at Red Hill under new Brisbane coach Anthony Seibold.

Once regarded as the fastest man in the NRL, ‘The Jet’ had a mixed return to Redfern, scoring one try from 12 games last year.

Determined to recapture his speed and attacking thrust, Roberts had a promising off-season, stripping several kilos this year in a bid to reclaim his NSW Origin jumper.

But Roberts has struggled during the coronavirus pandemic and has gone off the rails in recent weeks, prompting him to seek fresh help with another stint in rehab.

It is not known how long Roberts will remain in rehab. The Rabbitohs are hopeful he will not retire and will return to rugby league at some stage later this season, although he is unlikely to feature in Souths’ line-up for the NRL’s planned return on May 28.

Roberts first went into rehab during his time at the Broncos in 2016 before a second trip to Thailand in 2018.

Two years ago, Roberts spoke of his private battles, admitting getting the best out of himself in the NRL was a daily battle.

“I’m still a work in progress,” he told the NRL’s official website.

“I’m always going to have problems in my life. It’s just a matter of dealing with them the right way.

“I have certain tools and methods I use when I feel like I’m feeling those kind of pressures. They are the stuff I learnt in Thailand and just by growing as a person.

“I’ve learnt to avoid certain things and talk about my problems with people I trust. It helps a lot.”

Surely they won't succeed. You never know how mental health is going to go, they can't say 100% that he won't ever play again.

They got away with an incredibly corrupt deal with Sam Burgess, surely no more. Though I wouldn't put it past Souths for trying.

I don't think the favours dealt out to Rabbits, Roosters, Storm and Broncos will end just because Greenberg is gone though.
Hopefully, but not confident until the current NRL board is swept away and replaced with fresh blood.

If he's reading this or hears of this, then James mate, look after yourself and don't let the Souths club push you into making any decision right now. They care only about you as a player, not a person. Look after yourself, get the help you need, football will still be there when you are ready.

The post concerned the potential for Souths to explore centre options in the market. I hope James makes a return to the field because the NRL need players of his quality.

If Souths do try to push him into medical discharge, hopefully his manager is doing the job he is paid for and ensures his client isn't unfairly pushed out while trying to deal with his issues. He's a great player in his prime so hopefully he's not lost to the game, although it's pretty early in the piece to be coming out with that sort of doomsaying talk.

Wouldn't say he's a great player, one trick pony IMO. And his prime would've been a few years ago.
Hopefully he gets himself sorted out, kudos to him for not trying to lay blame for his issues on anybody else.

I had this conversation last night when a guy was bagging Robert's, to me he always seems to put his hand up when he is struggling. I have to admire him for that, it always seems to be his decision to enter rehab. The guy I was talking to was suggesting that he should face suspension over his issues, I thought this was a disgusting take on this situation but came as little surprise as he is s Panthers supporter.

Probably brought up with the same sticks and stones crap that general society espoused when I was growing up.

I don't understand that. Why suspend him, what has he done wrong?

Sometimes players get into trouble with something, and then play the mental health card, and check themselves into somewhere to try and get out of trouble. Is that what this Penrith supporter thought was going on? I haven't heard anything like that, and to Roberts' credit, like you said, putting you hand up when you need help is a hard thing to do and a really good thing to do.
