James Roberts

Well he hasnt shirked it IMO. Put his hand up for a train and trial contract, put the hard work in and was rewarded with a contract around $150K. Looks in good shape physically and I thought Saturday is the best he has played in our colours.

I give Roberts a lot of credit for what he is doing in his own life.

Joey Lielua was also offered a T&T and HE took the easy path.
I’m talking about his whole career. The easy path was drugs and alcohol abuse.
I agreed that this is his last chance and he did go alright the other night. Hope he keeps it up.

Roberts is our best centre & on his day can still be an awesome player he just needs the players inside of him to give him the ball early & if so he will succeed & become our most dangerous player in attack he also proved some people wrong on this forum with his defence on Saturday night.

He has a one year deal, which he was lucky to get and will likely not have it extended after this season.

Let's not gass him up.
He hasn't been a good player in a number of years.

He had talent coming through but has never lived up to that potential.

Our centre stocks are incredibly poor.

Talau, AJ, Roberts, Kei, Pauga and Gildart.
These are cup players, at best.

Willing to give Gildart some time to show what he can do though.

I wouldn't be re-signing or giving deals to any of them and instead recruiting, with a strong important put on centres and second rowers for 2023 onward.

Hopefully Tupou works out also as he didn't look good in the trials.

Premature to judge Gildart on one game ..but at 85kgs he gives away15/20kgs each week so he'll have both defensive issues and endurance issues over the course of the season...plus he got injured a lot in ESL.
Im hoping Gildart is electric in attack to compensate......?He must have something..surely,other than Madge simply being unable to attract elsewhere within NRL?
One or more (but not all) of Talau ,Stanford or AJ will surely make it as genuine NRL centres.they're all nearly there now.Stanford must be nocking down the door against the knights this w/e
Pauga and Kei will probably never rise above depth players ,and we have too many of those and need to go
So despite having 4 possibles this year plus Roberts,we defnitely need one established strike centre recruited for next year...Lomax wld have been perfect, but that bird has flown. But there are others.(Kris).
Important for us to have a speedy & penetrative midfield that can break the line, particularly with 2 slow wingers
And if Roberts remains with the squad next year, our recruitment has failed.Hes fit but lost his key assets ..speed and confidence

Yes, as it stands I would not re-sign any of our centers.

^ WHICH SUCKS!

Why? we want continuity. We keep shuffling our back line and that means instead of a defensive wall we have "hey nice to meet you?"!!! Instead of attacking flow we have half dropped balls.

If Roberts comes back good, keep him. People are dwelling on his past which was him as a gun but drunk as a skunk. He has come back more level, he has talent, if he performs this year Re-sign him.

Doueini is the other person we should be putting at Center. He is a good defender and having a multi-talented person at Center pushes the position.
Gildart can prove himself and then prove that he can defend, else punt.

The rest - bar Tupou, why are we holding onto them? Are we just going to bank up Fringe-graders? What is our hiring pattern always going to be 5 Hookers and a bunch of Fringe graders?

Not everyone can be on $500k in a team. I'm still amazed we're rubbishing a bloke on minimum salary.

How many blokes can you say make the run-on side on the minimum? There aren't many.

The ones we're paying more $ to is where our focus needs to be. Jimmy is solid depth. It's not his fault we have no one good enough to take that spot from him.

Doueihi is no better defender than Gildart.

He defended well the other night, over played his hand a bit in attack. All he needs to do is make his tackles, not go for miracle plays and with his pace will easily be in our team each week. Can’t see him taking us to the top of the table but for 150k you’d be mad to not keep him around imo.

Defs need better centres though.

Thought he played well last week. A bit of early ball when he had some space would have been good.

He currently represents value for money. He is in the side because 3 of our centre prospects are injured. Most clubs have a player like him on their books. It’s called cap management.

we have bigger problems than the jet!

The real problem is none of our centre stocks, jet included are up to the first grade standard.

Has been like this for years.

I cannot fathom why the recruitment and coaching teams haven't addressed this issue.

you are correct, the fact that the club doesn’t see a centre as a priority or has been unable to sign a first class centre is in itself a problem.
JR though, played well while not great is still value for the money.

Has looked better this year, but a complete crock. Playing injured after one week as he was most of last year
