James Tamou accepts his time at Penrith is likely coming to an end but has left his playing future in the hands of his wife Brittney as he focuses on winning a premiership.
Tamou, 31, has been heavily linked to a switch to the Wests Tigers in 2021 after the former NSW and Australian representative was told by Ivan Cleary it's unlikely the club will have salary cap space for next season.
The Panthers captain and his family, which includes four young children, reside in Glenmore Park and a deal with the Wests Tigers would ensure they could remain in Sydney's west.
NRL.com understands an announcement on the securing of Tamou could be made by the joint venture as early as this week.
"I have told [my wife and manager] that in the conditions we're in I am happy to get one or two more years, whatever it may be," Tamou said.
"There are some other boys struggling a bit, so I'm just pretty fortunate there are teams interested. "I want to leave everything out of it and concentrate here, but you do want your future sorted. "That's why I leave it to my wife, she will tell me little bits and pieces. She knows what's right for our kids and where we want to be."You want to get it sorted and have your future sorted, but it's a weird one where I want to put the boys and team first."It's getting serious here. It's a young group too who sort of don't understand the seriousness of finals so I need to concentrate on that."
I leave it to my wife ... She knows what's right for our kids.Tamou is so determined to lead the side through the playoffs without distraction he told Michael Maguire just that when the Wests Tigers coach introduced himself following their round 16 clash last month. "I bumped into him here after the game and it was sort of like 'it's nice to meet you'," Tamou said.
"He just wanted to introduce himself and say hello. I said that you've got a good young crop of boys here. "And we started talking about it and I said I would rather leave it to my manager and let my wife and I discuss it as we get on. He was respectful of that, but we were good for the minute or two we were talking.
"I am happy with where it is at the moment and fortunate we will get something done soon."

If only we had Greenburg as our CEO we could have sent her a diamond ring along with a testimonial match for his time in the game all outside the salary cap. We send her flowers and we would have been fined and lose competition points.

They're an odd bunch footballers.
No hell no way I'd let my wife decide on my future, no because she isn't smart enough to make good decisions (because she is), but because nobody can really make a decision for you about your work career and truly understand what makes you happy and your career goals.
And if it all goes pear-shaped, you want to be in a decision where YOU made the best decision at the time, not someone else made the decision for you at that time.
I don't get why it's so hard to take a half day a week for a few weeks to figure out your future, still train your guts out, don't give it any thought on weekends and still make an informed decision by yourself. Weird.

I think your right (about the fluff). Might be a bit off putting to penrith fans if your Captain is in the media talking about his club for next year while this year they have a real shot.

Doesn’t sound like he really wants to come here. Sounds like a last option only. This will be a disaster an ageing prop who doesn’t want to be here but has no choice. It’s not going to end well.

yea the issue with articles like this, is that the writers para phrase a crap ton so it might sound different to how he might be saying it

It sounds like he didn’t want to leave Penrith which is fair enough but it’s not like we are his only option. Dragons reportedly wanted him pretty badly and he definitely could’ve gone to England.
I like that he told Madge he likes the young fellas we’ve got considering he’ll be doing the job of mentoring them if he joins us.

Interesting. What is the right team for his kids? Only his wife will know
Maybe we should invite their kids to a playgroup and show them the best parks in the area.
Ok so he isn't interested in chatting with a potential future coach and making sure they are on the same page. That's odd.
This is pretty confusing and not exciting reading.

I was talking to my mate about Tamou last week and his words to me were taht Tamou is a great bloke but there are only two things in his life that matter, Footy & Family.
Based on what my mate says, it sounds like something he would say.
