The Penrith Panthers have released playmaker Jamie Soward from the remainder of his contract with the club, effective immediately.

The 31-year-old played 53 games for the Panthers after joining the club ahead of the 2014 season, and will now link up with the London Broncos. "Jamie feels the time is now right to pursue an opportunity to finish his career in England," Panthers executive general manager Phil Gould said.
"How playing careers begin and end is not an exact science but he has recognised there are a number of emerging talents at the club who deserve the chance to progress. "Jamie has been wonderful for the Panthers and has done everything we have ever asked of him. He has been a leader, on and off the field, and played a key role in the development of our younger players. "If Jamie sees a future for himself in coaching, once his playing days have come to an end, it is my intention that he will begin that coaching career here at the Panthers."

It can all finish so quick for players these days, after 11 seasons in the NRL….3 weeks ago he was playing first grade, boom...gone
Nothing like job security

I would have thought they'd keep there as a back up. Their rookie halves may not be going aswell coming into the finals.
The coach mustn't rate him at all.

London Broncos aren't even in the Super League - they are in the Championship - however they will probably figure in the playoffs for promotion in the next few weeks.

phil gould has really become a diplomat in his current role at penrith.

he was full of accolades for both cleary and soward in their departures from penrith even though he must have been instrumental in bringing them to the club in the first place.

so is it becoming a revolving door at penrith.

phil gould must be chasing success hard- if it doesnt work in the near short term, pack your bags.

thank heavens the tigers arent like that,or are they?

Yes the Middle 8's could see them challenge for promotion, should be an exciting time for all.

Soward's defence has always let him down. It seemed to regress to abominable levels this year. He made our halves look like Gillespie and Napa.

It would be great to see at least one of these matches each week as there is a lot at stake for these sides.

_Nothing like job security_

That went out of society ages ago.

It might have been lined up in order to free up cash for Hardaker so they could front load some of his salary for next year.

He could kick them to a win though.

Hmmmmm. Gould's text message about Mitchell Moses makes sense now. I reckon there were negotiations where Moses was off to the Roosters and we were going to take Soward.

Has Soward ever finished up a contract at a club? He got moved on by Easts and Saints too didn't he?

He did finish one at Saints and then got extended. He then got released during the course of the extended contract and went and played for London before joining the Panthers on massive overs (for his 2013 form).
