OFFICIAL Jarome Luai - #295

The narrative on this guy will certainly change. His dislike will grow.
You only have to read the way people death ride Galvin on here to witness an example. Pretty much all of them used to defend him as well.
For mine Luai only came here for the money. Yes he may have inspired attitude change off field as he has an infectious personality….but has done very little onfield to help out. Him chasing the money over seas is well within character.
Of course he came for the money but all players change clubs for the money, even the ones who people naively believe don't.
That's not a character flaw, that' the society we all live in. We all do it.
That doesn't in any way diminish how he's resurrected this club from the depths of despair.
His dislike will only grow amongst those who already dislike him, the rest of us appreciate what he's done for the club.

It will be interesting to see how many, if any players head to PNG on an all expenses paid trip during our bye round mid to late May.

Would the club have to give players permission for players to go and have a look to satisfy their curiosity, would it be better to allow them to go and have a look rather than stop it.

I can see pros and cons on both sides of that argument how appropriate would it be being named - Buy round. 🤣

Yes they would need permission … so no chance … let them do it in the offseason .. luai was unique circumstances… the more time to be exclusively talking to these guys the better in the meantime

The bottom line with this whole saga is we have offloaded a player who is eating up a large chunk of our cap at time when he should be past his peak. Okay I probably should say he offloaded us, anyway we paid him over the odds to lead the rebuild and change our directions, and it would appear that is working.

As long as he doesn’t rip the joint apart by enticing a stack of players to follow, it’s a win for us

I agree with the sentiments around Luai the player … I still think he can play a part in success here over the next 18 months ..

I don’t buy this “enticing other players “ stuff and it looks like Benji doesn’t either …

These are grown men .. some with families … they will make their own decisions at the end of the day about a move like this .. it isn’t moving up the road to Belmore …

Yeh. His mates will pick his brains on what his trip was like, what he saw etc etc...but this is a huge lifestyle changing call and i doubt any players will be influenced by a peer...it will.be solely their own decision.
Might be a different story somewhat if they manage to.put together a really gun squad...that may play a part.
But all they have so far is a coach.
I dunno if they have a ground...they dont have a centre of excellence...Chiefs bosses toured Parra and Penriths CoEs over summer....what happens if a player needs emergency surgery....is a several hour flight involved? theres still a lot of unknowns imo

My friends dad works there for the government and must have armed bodyguards at all times because it is so dangerous, I think the nrl is playing a risky game over there especially if the games are played in Port Moresby
Don't they play Queensland cup games there in Port Moresby.

Have problems arisen with those games? I honestly don't know, just asking.

Also, people are saying they need 30 players, are they fielding a reserve grade side in Queensland cup or are the PNG Hunters going to be their feeder club or are they just fielding an NRL side with 30 players.

If that is the case then if they had some injuries and suspensions trying to run with 30 players could find them seriously lacking in depth at some stage.

Have never seen these sorts of details anywhere? Does anyone know because I'm genuinely interested.

What about the thousands of FIFO workers over there? Do they have private body guards whilst they're doing welding? Or those Aussies who actually live and work there doing jobs from Accountants, Doctors, Lawyers, or road contractors.....so over dramatic.

Throw in Matt Balin, Josh Reynolds, Russell Packer, Chris McQueen and of Course PNG local hero Justin Olam inside UK import Captain Oliver Gildart and they will have the makings of Oliver's Dad's Army!

Meanwhile, I have received the Official Mud Men Soundtrack for the Chiefs' Victory Song. An adaptation of the Pink Floyd Album Obscured By Clouds called "Absolutely Curtains for Our Opponents". Not quite "Who are, Who are, Who are we?", but nothing is.

But check out the Cover Art and if that isn't Jerome Luai as imagined over 50 years ago then I'm obscured by something other than clouds!

Been a long time since I've heard that.

So PNG has the Prime Minister recruiting for them
We get u/16s coach Patty Richards

LOL
Yep and when political folks get involved they will make dirty deals , PNG will be a place of dirty deals , underhanded payments , brown paper bags , jobs for the boys , scandals , hold on to ya hats as it will be a fun ride to watch , living in compound type places you only need a couple of guys to be the numbers ones , the so called leaders of the compound and the shit storm will start , only gonna take one wife and bloke do the nasty and all hell breaks out , besides players of ability you would be looking at the players behaviour, imagine 3 Matt lodges ,that dude from Newcastle who wanted to fight a guy in the tunnel , geez be good to watch

Good luck finding a player who is not motivated by money. Some just have more scope to dictate terms than others.

Not saying money isnt a big part of the motivation but plenty of players have made moves for other reasons too, like winning a comp, being closer to home.

Money was clearly a motivator here, but I think its doing Luai and injustice to suggest that its solely about the money.

What? All those guys are retired ?

The guy that described that was seeing stars after being hit in the head with a machete. 🤣
I’m pretty sure the only places in the world with 7 star are places like Dubai and Macau , huge tourist destinations where the extremely wealthy go to have caviar fed to them whilst they sit on a bed of rainbows …. I’m joking but , whn you actually see what a 7 star hotel is … I highly doubt there’s one in port moreseby . I don’t even think there’s 1 in Thailand or Bali .
