How much are they paying?

Very good question Sheer64\. Some assume we're not paying much for him, but even if we're paying half or less it's s still a fair chunk, as he was on good money at Manly.
One thing's for sure…He's not a freebie.

Well beyond his best, but really, who cares if we sign him, he's gonna spend 99% of his time in reserve grade anyway. And he's a pretty good reserve grader.

Who knows how much anyone is getting paid? The NRL discloses nothing of that sort. The CEO of our club, amongst numerous other news sources, have stated that he came at a favourable price, hence why some of us believe he is a good deal. I truly cannot believe that after all the acrimony over our salary cap last year that we'd then turn around and blow a lot of money on a player like Ballin.

I am normally the first to say you can't judge a signing without knowing what they're being paid. Even the fringest first grader can be useful depth if paid little enough, and even the biggest superstar can kill you if he's taking up too much cap.

The exception is players who are simply sub first grade standard and should never get closer to the pitch than I do. Blokes who just fill a jersey in reggies and keep a younger option or an experiment from getting a go. Joel Reddy, basically. Dead weight.

Just a question to your statement that Manly are paying most of his salary. I too would think he would be a good pickup at 100k per year based on the fact he can tackle. Last year we saw teams using two hookers for the first time. Maybe the trend will continue and we will lead the way and play three? Who knows.

If he was signed up as a backup for our nsw cup team, on minimal wage, doesn't play nsw cup unless there's injuries, and he's there to be a model professional at training (if that's what he is) then ok. If he's not a superstar at training then no thanks, but role models are few and far between so we need those types of players to lead our younger ones.

I thought that we might have been rid of all the Reddy's after his old man got moved on. Pity!!!

Taylor has stated an increased emphasis on defense, something we improved in last year (particularly before we started being more free-flowing/interesting/human in attack) and people like Ballin will help.

re. hookers, all I know is the comments from media professionals about us "having too many" and being serious about it, makes me question their standing - doesn't every team have three hookers between their NSW Cup and NRL teams? Didn't we have three last year with Dene, Robbie and Manaia anyway?

We have lost a few outside backs in NSW Cup, so if that's who Reddy (IF he signs) replaces, then who cares?

He wont be eating into our NRL Cap, so it makes no real difference if we sign him or not. Just means there is an experienced ex-NRL player in reggies who can mentor the young guys and lead by example. Since I doubt he is being pursued to play first grade, I don't see it as a bad thing at all.
