If Michael Chaamas is right...and he generally is on Tigers stuff (gets fed directly)...then it is basically:

Joey's wife and kids have not settled in Sydney

They wanted to go back to Canberra to be with family

Joey thus drove them back...
Club 'told' rather than approved.

Joey now out two weeks.

I don't want to judge, but a lot of people are having to make sacrifices at the moment. I know a nurse who can't see her partner at all and she is not getting remotely close to 600 grand.

just because she is coping doesn’t mean that Joey is, or even has to cope . Also who knows the internal workings of his family structure , and how he feels about his family and wife .
It’s like using a guy , who has done 5 tours of the Middle East and doesn’t have any PTSD , criticising a cop for seeing 1 18 year old dead in a car accident , “because it’s only one” . They’re both equally as valid as each other and neither should be diminished or put on a pedestal .

I agree, but I also think salary and jobs allow people to stretch things a bit. I.e. he is on 600 and a few weeks pay won't be missed / club will beg him to come back.

On a working man's wage, most people could not simply drop everything and nick off for two weeks.

BJ is in a privileged position where this won't cost him his job. All I am saying is that, were he in a more vulnerable / lower paying job he (and a lot of sportspeople) likely would think twice about this stuff and be a little stronger emotionally.

Yea , maybe. Or this is something that he is struggling with and no amount of money in the world would change it . Separation from family and lockdown can send the most sane guys into meltdown .
Maybe there’s 1 million things he can cope with and your friend wouldn’t ever be able to . It’s all relative.
I don’t really see how someone’s financial situation is relevant to being in lockdown 24/7 with your family . You either cope or you don’t

If he told the club prior to doing it then so be it that’s fine. What kind of club would we be if we denied him the right to look after his family? Sounds like the club knew about it before he left, it’s not exactly something you can fully plan out.

Melbourne told Addo Carr to suck it up when he started whinging about going back to Sydney last year ..
Joey has been a trash purchase so far ..
I’d even prefer Momirovski and the loose change !

The difference may be that JL has shown that he is quite prepared to do dumb things, not put in and sulk when things get rough. HR Pufnstuff had more credibility and a smaller head.

The only thing I can think of. If it’s happened suddenly. Is his asked the club for a day off training to drive his wife and Kids to Canberra.
Canberra being 3-4 hours away. Joey could do a round trip only missing one day of training if it was an immediate problem.
The club probably has had to advise him that unfortunately in this situation ‘COVID and the bubble’ it is not just a day off training and he would of been leaving the bubble in doing so.
Sounds like the club were told after he already made the decision to go.
What I meant by prior approval is he could of discussed it with the club first and gave them time to go approach nrl Apollo group for approval or have a staff member be excused for a couple of days to drive his family instead.
Interesting that he will head back to Sydney and live on his own for the rest of the season.
I wonder if he tells his wife I’ll be back in September?

Wish we didn't sign him...why are all our high priced recruits "duds"....sigh

Because theyre almost ALWAYS some other clubs rejects!!
All good clubs find a way to retain the players they want

The Club knew all this yet signed him anyway.

There is no vaccine so where does this end?

Just feels like the whole competition is going to implode. The off field discussion seems to be overriding anything else and their cars signs that many are struggling with the bubble environment.

I wonder why, if there issues, Joey and the family didn't think about it during the 4 weeks he was sitting out because of his poor decision making.

He could have looked after his family, done 2 weeks quarantine and been ready to play when his suspension was up.

I dont think it is that different tbh..
Both had to show respect for the club thats paying them a truckload of $$,work with that club rather than pursue selfish whims, and both had a relationship with their coach and fellow players and understood the consequences of their actions.
One showed that regard for his employer, the other didnt give a rats
Im over Joey..no wonder Ricky punted him,Not just error prone, but also high maintenance that jeopardises the entire teams culture which is already fragile.Hes supposed to be a leader....

We don't know any of the circumstances surrounding this so putting the boot into him is pretty low imo. And really the circumstances are none of our business.

The question we should be asking, is whatever the circumstances are, if he's not playing, and having leave, depending on whatever is happening, does this affect our salary cap at all? Can we pay him less if he's taken leave (unapproved leave as we know is often not paid in the business world)? Don't want to disadvantage the guy, and personally I still see him as a good signing for our club, but gotta see the angles and try to make a buck where we can.

Sounds to me like the club *didnt* know... But I may be wrong

Club statement reads that way

He had 4 weeks to sort family out/relocate....

So he'll basically miss 1/4 of the season due to brain fluffs and this.

Wests Tigers centre Joey Leilua has been cleared to return to the Wests Tigers bubble, effective immediately.

Leilua had voluntarily left the bubble due to a personal family reason, with Wests Tigers providing NRL Project Apollo biosecurity experts with updates on his interactions and location.

Having reviewed that information, NRL Project Apollo biosecurity experts have cleared Leilua’s immediate return to the Wests Tigers bubble.
