The mentality of these guys is awesome. I agree the NRL should have a better stockpile of cash for a rainy day, but man alive talk about biting the hand that feeds you

NRL would be much better off if they didn't have to pay the players so much money!!

I think what the players misunderstand is that paying to watch footy is a luxury, and will be one that many will soon not be able to afford. what are they going to do then when there is no footy to play?

Is everyone forgetting the Collective Bargaining Agreement that Cam Smith and the RLPA fought so hard for. All players signed up for this. Its a 'share of revenue' model. Therefore, loss of revenue means loss of players share.
Remember the players stating they are the product, well if there is no product there is no revenue.

100% agree mate...

I might be the only one but was very disappointed when i read Joey said this.. We have been under the radar and mainly good media for a while now and this was just not needed and i would think Justin and the team won't be happy with him.

I'm not that disappointed in BJ, he's not renowned for being a leading thinker. I tend to ignore 99% of what players say, even "the smart ones".

The more I think of this "my contract should be honoured" posturing from the players, the more I laugh at the fact that as soon as a player wants out of his "binding" contract, they do everything possible.....

Is it written into his contract that he will get paid if the season is called over? if not, too bad, so sad. If my work place closes up, im screwed and wont get paid. Enjoy the hundreds of thousands to play a game for 80 mins a week for 6 months a year and sit in a gym and coffee houses for a decade Joey, youll be in the the real world soon enough kid.

Hi fairdinkum,I see your position regarding work closure and loss of pay...I will try and help you with some info I was given that may help...
I work in a very successful hotel in the Southern Highlands,we will be having a phone hook up with the AHA.(Australian hotels association)tomorrow regarding restrictions placed on us..
No more than 100 people indoors...
observe the 1.5 metre distancing...
there will be more...
This brings me to my point..the AHA may shut us down for 2/4 weeks pending phone call tomorrow...I to will be out of work with no income especially that I recently lost my business through the fires..
I was told the PM is planning a second injection within the economy,in this I will be able to be put on newstart for the amount of time Im out of work...it will help me and you should investigate it further,Im in the process of doing it asap to give me a safety net should all go haywire...hope this helps...

I think i saw somewhere they all have an act of god clause in their contracts, if that is the case then so be it. He can blow up but so can the Qantas workers and anyone else who gets put off during this event. Im pretty sure he's on better financial ground than they are.

BJ and fonua should be shamed for their comments, players base salary is way ahead of what most people earn. People are losing there jobs never mind getting asked to take a pay cut.

I can see where he’s coming from. His entire life is footy and the NRL have literally no money stashed away for an emergency, pretty ridiculous. The NRL should have money put away for a crisis.

Toddy has $6 and a Revolver in his top draw ...that’s it !

No different to anyone else...

Comments from him and Fonua-Blake are short sighted. Go on lads, push for your full pay while the game is offline for 3 months, and when it goes broke, good luck chasing up the balance of your contract. Maybe do what everyone else is doing, ease up on your spending and save a bit of your own money away because that's what everyone else of a fraction of the wages top 30 NRL players get have to do.

The players and NRL administration are in total sync for a change, their views are short sighted and reactionary.

Funny how the game should have money stashed away for a crisis, where is the onus on players to do the same?

I remember the NRL bragging about how many tens of millions they made last year - now they are begging the government for a handout themselves. I’m sure Joey has money around to pay his bills but you try not getting paid for possibly 6 months or more and see how you go. Every other major sporting organisation in the world has the money to survive this virus except the NRL, it’s bad business from them.

Everyone is in this position, it is not limited to Rugby League players, this is what they seem to forget.

I don’t think he’s forgot that at all - I think he expects a major sporting company like the NRL to be smart enough to be able to survive a measly three months without revenue like every other sport in the world can. I’m sure Joey could survive but like he said it’s pretty bad the NRL have no money stashed away at all

Absolutely right regarding the NRL, it highlights squandering of a lucrative TV deal they spunked their trunks over years ago. However in saying that, the other sports noted like the EPL, NBA et al are not just regional sporting codes: they are a worldwide brand which are renowned the world over which enables them to draw on infinitely larger funds than the likes of the NRL, so it's not directly comparative.

Countless other businesses will fall over if they were in a position where they had to suspend operations for 3 months as well, so it's not just limited to the NRL.

Shouldn't the players at BJ's level have some money stashed away for a rainy day (or a biblical flood in this case )

I'm guessing they will get backpaid if anything was to happen

Talking of this at least when they spoke of clubs going under financially we didn't get a mention in the Bottom 3 clubs (Manly definitely ,Sharks and Warriors )

Wests Tigers have fought their way to be self-sustainable ...that doesn't even take what Wests Ashfield are able to tip in if necessary..

The concern is the amount of Corporate dollars currently provided starts to dry up..if there is no footy or the CV crisis starts to hit them...

We are in a better position than a lot of Clubs..

As for the players just concentrate on playing..

Maybe for once it is worth crowing about the clubs financial position. What good is it for Manly fans to have a good on field results when they don't have the coin to field a team?

Yes, because the NRL should anticipate a world wide pandemic. Funny how players are happy to trot out how the game is a business when they are negotiating contracts, yet when it comes to the downside of business, suddenly it’s not fair.

True but there was an article earlier today quoting Gould who said when the Commission was first formed 9 years ago, one of the things they intended to do was put aside 50 mil a year in to a futures fund. Today that fund would have had 450mil plus interest. So JL does have a point that the NRL have mismanaged what funds they have received over time. The other interesting point is where did it all go??? I read somewhere that John Grant a previous NRL halfwit drives a yellow Maseratti. He obviously did well.

The NRL can't even agree to a player swap....you think they would stash money for emergencies? Ha...call me when your done

Joey better get his head out of his arse. Australians are losing and will lose their jobs. Having a footballer complaining is the last thing the NRL needs.

And 475 Italians lost their lives yesterday. All patients dying alone basically triage condemning them to be left to die. An international tragedy and I'm sure lots of families in Leichhardt and the outer South West are impacted.
