All Payton had to do was watch how diabolical Bateman’s defence was for Wests Tigers last season and he would have known better.
I’m sure a few of these NRL coaches don’t watch any other games other than their own team.

Why on Earth anyone was jumping up and down for letting him go without an immediate replacement bewilders me.

He is a liability. Adds nothing. He is not even depth standard.

An open roster spot and some cash is better than having this guy on our books.

Yep, his contract was the problem.
I don’t like all the BS about him being toxic etc….thats a distraction being run by those who don’t like the guy.
This was about his money.

Why do we do this?

Ok so you backload contracts to sign true talent. I.e. Latrell Mitchell comes on the market and you offer 800k for the first year (or as much as you can) then up it in the next years....
Clearly with Bateman, his first/second years here would be the best. After that he would likely age out.

Leaving us with a salary cap headache and a disruption. Don't know if the toxic stuff is BS, but Marshall and Richo know they need to push him out due to the Contract. That's going to be a Toxic experience and some kind of cap compensation we have to pay too offload him.

He had a very poor game. Though he had bad moments for us, I don't remember him playing that badly. Particularly concerning was his defense. I remember him being a good defender, if not always a dominant tackler, but here he was targeted and exposed. Unplayable form.

He was out bludging near the winger for most of the first half. Made half hearted attempts to chase a bomb, was walking around looking gassed. I'm glad he is out of the Crocodile Roll club, he would struggle in a sausage roll.

I heard from a Cowboys fan they signed Bateman for his defence. He said the Cows have young 2nd rowers that are great attacking players but needed an experienced 2nd rower to mentor them in defence. Im glad they took him off us.
We only had a few senior players last year like Api, Twal, Klemmer, Bateman, I’Pap and a bunch of kids.
When Benji criticised the senior players Bateman spat the dummy. I wonder what’s going to happen at the Cowboys now between the coach and Bateman.

Yep I actually didn’t mind his niggle because we lacked mongrel across the park. His digs at us in social media have really turned me off him and he’s painted himself into a corner now.
