John Grant

On another note, I hear so often that RU forwards are soft and don't have the ticker for the physical contest, just wonded why in some 17 years or so, no RL forwards have gone to Rugby? Easy mone, surely?

The great man Brad Thorn went to Rugby and is regarded as a great Union player.

Also I think John Grant hasn't had any league experience before now so its a bit tough throwing a guy who is not 100% accustom to the rules into the deep.

The scouting report I read in relation to john grant from the weekend was very positive, obviously on the improve.

Good,I have high hopes for him, unlike most on here I think he has all the attributes to take lote's spot next year, maybe if injury occurs this year.

He should be congratulated for trying his hand at a game that's foreign to him.

 Yup… such a foreign game to him.

:unamused:

Junior Rugby>GPS Rugby>ARU Pathways>Eastwood>Aus 7's Programme

Any questions Bro?

He's a winger _bro_. I've said this before and I'll say it again… YES there are differences, I've played both codes (YES, not at that level, but I have some sort of measure... and I'm sure as do you), but to say the game is foreign to him is ridiculous. People are overplaying the "he'll take time to adjust" excuse.

I'm not necessarily saying he'll go great-guns, he could be going terrible (according to some he is, I can't watch so..), but that's purely because of his talents more so than the fact that he hasn't played league before.

What I'm saying is, he's ready for league, or should be very soon, but first grade... I wouldn't have a clue, but would love to see him there and somehow find it very hard to believe he could go worse than Utai and to SOME extent Reddy - who I appreciate is a veteran and can read the game a lot better than both Utai and Grant.

The main difference is positional play in defence, particuarly in the defensive quarter and getting used to different defence patterns. Rugby generally play some sort hard slide/drift, league much less so.

Apparently his decision making and positional play in the first few rounds wasn't great, but by reports appears to be getting better.

Ive got no doubts he will be very useful in NRl at some stage

goose, excellent post.

on the whole transitional thing, is it dumb to liken it to nrl players now in the afl (hunt, folau)? to me the two codes are WAY different to union and league, but then i never played union.

i did however play aussie rules at a the second tier level over here (WA - footy is the code) and then (my proudest achievement!) was fullback for the first grade premiership team (WA - league is not the code!). i never knew why, but when i first started, a lot of people thought i had come from union. personally, i cant see any sort of softness in union! but probably reading play is a big learning curve?

i havent seen him play unfortunately, but from what i could get, have been very excited to see a big winger with lightning speed! i hope i get to see him do well in tigers colours soon.

Grant has some great attributes, most of which have been mentioned. Its early days for him and clearly he has a lot to learn about the structure, shape and defensive alignments of RL. Must be patient.

I dont hear this.
Maybe people just like winding you up

There's plenty you don't 'hear', including it seems the use of irony. Perhaps your hearing is affected by that perennial swoooooooooosh?

I think we should give him some time in reserve grade, yes he's got the skills and then some but going to rugby league from rugby union wouldn't be easy. He needs some time to work on match awareness and where to be positioned at different times I think if we threw him in there now he would get found out very quickly from opposition teams and then everyone would want his head on the chopping block.

we got a couple of guys off contract this year hopefully most will leave making space for better guys

Yes that would be a nice change.

Pommy Spencer but Ray Cashmere said he was a good player never playing 1st Grade
John Grant but he played Rugby Union not going to play 1st Grade
Linc Port too small never going to play 1st Grade
Pat Politoni and Shaun Spence not going to play 1st Grade
Dane Chisholm a one year fill in not going to play 1st grade

Warren if your still there next year we could do with a miss on the speculation and reserve grade signings thanks. Maybe put the money to better use on some established Front rowers.

Give the guy a chance to find his feet in rugby league will you. He's played what 4 or 5 games and you want to right him off as a poor signing? He may not be ready yet and he may not be ready till next season and he may not make it at all but i just don't understand all the hate he is getting on here.Personally i hope he can find his feet as the prospect of a tall, strong quick winger running around for us is something i would like to see.If he fails so be it but give him time and wouldn't think he is on great money either so worth the risk i say.

Maybe because we don't believe the hype Wayne Cousins generates. Maybe we are lucky/unlucky enough to have watched him play NSW cup. His not 1st grade standard.

He's not playing first grade, he's learning the ropes in state cup where he should be at this point in his career. We are 4 games into the season if after 26 he still has no clue then the club will punt him.

If John grant was playing we would have won today .

He is 104kgs and can run 100m in under 12 seconds .
