JONES CONFIDENT FIRST WIN AROUND THE CORNER

Wests Tigers Coach Grant Jones is confident his team can break through for their maiden victory when they take on the Parramatta Eels at the Sydney Football Stadium on Friday, March 26.
Prior to the season kick-off, Wests Tigers were tipped to be one of the gun sides of the 2010 Toyota Cup competition after Jones took the Wests Tigers to the grand final last season.
Wests Tigers sit in 15th place on the ladder after two rounds following losses to Manly and Sydney Roosters – games Jones believes his team could have won.
“Both the first two games were the same. We got momentum early in the second half after not getting off to a great start in the first half. We were two tries down,’’ Jones said.
“We then got ourselves into a position to go on with it but didn’t. Against the Roosters, we had enough ball to win two games.
“Against the Roosters, (half-back) Jay Florimo kicked the ball well, we got repeat sets and good field position but we are just not executing well enough to put the opposition’s goal line defence under pressure.
“We will work hard at training this week. We just need to do a bit of tinkering and a win will come.”
Like Jones, Wests Tigers supporters will be hoping the first win comes this Friday against the 10th placed Parramatta, who have won one of their two matches. The Eels go in on the back of a 32-16 loss to Manly last Sunday.
“Parramatta have a couple of good forwards who can offload in prop Peni Terep and second-rower Pat O’Hanlon,’’ Jones said.
“They have a good kicking game through their five-eighth TK Amosa and they are a pretty energetic side. A lot of their players played last year so they have some experience.”
Jones said he was particularly pleased with the early form shown by prop Neil Begovich and second-rower Joel Wisbey.
“Neil has been very strong. He has a high work rate and is a real tradesman,’’ Jones said.
“Joel had to put a little bit of weight on after moving to the forwards from the centres but he has been one of our best.”
Wests Tigers captain Matt Hyland sits second on the competition’s list for most tackles with 82 after just two rounds. Hyland was the leading tackler in the Toyota Cup last season, making an extraordinary 967 tackles.
Kick-off for the Eels game is 5.20pm.
