If JT hadnt smartly wasted $300,000 on Ballin, Liddle and a few others might have had an opportunity much earlier. With Farah looking likely to stay next year, lets convince Ballin to retire and take a coaching job, and really focus on Liddle coming through.

Let's not

Not really, even without Ballin the next highest earning player would be in the top 25 only giving a little more available NRL cap space, the promoted player would likely be replaced by another Reggies player earning similar second tier cap money realistically having very little or no effect on the available second tier cap

If we hadnt invested in Ballin the player to move up to the top 25 would be Liddle. Our future hooker that has been re signed for a couple of years. Not a hooker who just had a knee reconstruction and wasnt wanted by his club. :crazy

I suppose the question becomes this , who do you want to have guiding Liddle in 2017 ??

Farah or Ballin ??

On current form i would have to say Farah. And if were paying him a $1million lets get our moneys worth. I think since JT has accepted Farah will be here next year, and since Farah has accepted his new limited role playing 60 minutes, we look like a much better and happier team.

Where did you pull that $300k figure from? posterior?

You know that Liddle would be the next highest earning player at club, JAC probably isn’t in the top 25 earners let alone Liddle. The club can't just select their top 25, it's the top 25 paid players.

Oh really, i was just picking my top 25 favourite players. My point is, if we dont sign Ballin, and commit to Liddle being our second hooker ( which we have done) then Liddle would have been on more money and expected to play first grade this year. After what we seen yesterday, you wouldnt have preffered Liddle as a back up to Farah then Ballon or Halatau?

I cant imagine him being on anything less.

JT was practically blushing when he told about the amazing deal we got him for. It's heavily subsidised by Manly. I don't reckon we're paying that.

tigerman80, Cherrington was and is the backup, everything is great in hindsight, but hindsight doesn’t help juggle 3 different salary caps, hard to say 10 or more months ago Liddle would be required and ready for NRL now

We're paying Ballin 300k lol. One of the best comments I've read. We'd be lucky to be paying 30, 000.

Not being privy to the finer details of the cap but from my understanding of the salary cap and to put it into some perspective

**NRL Salary Cap** – top 25 earning players at the club
These players can be used anytime in NRL or Reggies without any effect on the caps.

**Second Tier Cap** – all other players outside the top 25 and NYC contracts
Every time these players get selected for NRL they earn NRL minimum, therefore they use additional second tier cap space being the difference between their current second tier contract match payments and the NRL minimum match payment.

**NYC Cap** – players on an NYC contract
As with the second tier cap every time they play NRL they earn NRL minimum and use additional cap space, not certain if it is NYC cap space or second tier cap space these players use when promoted to play NRL.

To my knowledge there is no restriction on NYC players moving between NYC and Reggies.

Also the club can’t just decide who is their top 25, it is the top 25 earning players, a club can get around this by releasing a current top 25 player during the year and by re-signing a player previously outside the top 25 to an new extended contract and including an upgrade for the current year, however this is also subject to if and how much you are still paying player released and how much the upgrade may be, total NRL player payments must still remain within the total NRL cap for the NRL year (November 1 to October 31)

The above is probably why Felise is able to play regular NRL, he recently re-signed and together with the players the club have released recently (most likely Drinkwater moving to the UK), if he also received an upgrade for the remainder of this season together with his new extended contract he may now part of the current top 25

That was the plan for Cherrington to be the back up, but hes fallen out of favour, cant remember the last time he played first grade, could even be back as far as round 2\. Hopefully by next year Ballin, Halatau and Cherrington are gone, with Farah and and Liddle our hookers.

Just because we only got $30,000 value out of him , doesnt mean he is on $30,000 lol.

Liddle said Farah was his idol, so maybe that may play a part.
Any way good luck to the kid he seems pretty grounded, hope he kills it next year.

He might well be getting paid $300K but you can bet we're not paying any more than half of that. Manly had him signed up and we got him on very favourable terms as a result.

I think whenever someone outside the top 25 plays NRL it has to come out of the second tier cap, but it should only be the difference between the NYC match payment and the NRL minimum match payment. They might also have to make allowance for any win bonus as well out of the 2nd tier cap.

If 2 of Farah Cherington or Halatau go down at the same time…Liddle can be given exemption again...

He showed he can FG his defense was solid and his service was sharp ..once Liddle's confidence grows the other string to his bow his running game will come to the fore...

Good debut with a meat pie..well done young fella...
