Love hearing stories like this....
Hopefully the young Large lads make a good career at the Tigers.
Actually the really interesting story from my schoolboy days was that at one point around 1990 we had a fairly strong pipeline of emerging talent, which is pretty good for a non-selective school.
My Dad taught Paul Osborne and the guy was a schoolboy freak, when Lewo made the Commonwealth Bank final (losing to Gregs). Michael Speechley was a few years behind that, then when I started high school we had Solo Haumono a few years ahead of us.
Everyone knew Solo would become a pro, the guy was a weapon, the only kid I knew who could dunk the school basketball ring. When Lewo won the A-Grade with Solo in Year 12, the opposition just could not contain him. I think I was in Year 8 at the time.
We had quite a few sporting talents at the time - Greg Stafford the Swans player was about the same vintage as Solo, and a few years below me was young Brett Holman who ended up playing for the Socceroos.
But the one that sticks in my mind is we had this guy Tyler, I think it was Dave Tyler, and he was the shit in his age group, already well-known in the juniors and clearly the best player we had going. But Tyler had a recurring injury like dodgy knees, and I think he bounced around in Balmain and Bulldogs juniors without making any dent on first grade.
Instead this other guy Shane Rigon comes good right around Year 12, and although everyone knew he was good, I wasn't of the opinion that he was the guy to necessarily make a career of it. But then he plays some 200 games for Roosters and Souths.
Other interesting stuff happens, like watching a 16-year old Paul Mellor play A-Grade for Pagewood, with Shannon Donato. Mellor was a weapon, already man-sized at 16. Young Braith Anasta was playing for Randwick a few years behind me. Randwick were always bastards to play.
Probably my last good story was we had this terrific sprinter a year ahead of me called Jamie Green. Bloke was BY FAR the fastest guy in the MCC for several consecutive years. In Year 12 (me in Year 11) he lines up at the inter-school carnival and the only question is by how far he is going to win, because he's been obliterating the opposition for years.
Well the race goes and this tall blonde fellow laps the field, including Jamie Green left at a distant second. "Who the hell is this bloke from North Shore?" everyone wonders. Well it's Matt Shirvington, and within a few years he's in Olympic contention.
Since I left it's been a bit dire for footy talent; it seems to accumulate now in the Sports High Schools and other selective sporting schools.
