Juniors - Pathways General Discussion

The QRL has got rid of their U21 comp from next season, announced today. I wonder whether NSWRL will align and remove Flegg & shift SG Ball to a full winter comp.
Wow, that's an absolute disaster for junior development in Queensland. They're matching our ridiculous age groups and format for junior reps, only to scrap full time comps for young adults saying they can play Ron Massey equivalents. Ridiculous cost cutting surely. Kids careers would fall off a cliff if forced to Play against C grade men

We barely trust our elite 19 year olds to play flegg, Qld expects players to go straight from SG Ball to state cup? Utterly absurd and short sighted, especially for those players who are still physically developing.

And FYI Qld aren't making their ball equivalent a full winter comp, just a 10 week comp... Ball is 9 weeks plus finals...

This decision may see talented 20 year olds head south and we should be actively pursuing all opportunities to nab talented young qlders

Just watched most of the NSW schoolboys final Westfields v Pats Blacktown via the online stream.

In the most amazing finish, let me summarise ...

Westfields were down 13-6 at HT, score off an eyes-up Galvin grubber midway in 2nd half to narrow it to 13-12. Westfield dominated position in 2nd half. Against run of play, Pats score in corner to widen margin to 17-12.

Then Westfield make a long-range break 3 mins out with Galvin backing up as usual to run away but bringing the ball around for an easier conversion, another West Tigers pathways player Jared Haywood makes a dive at Galvin as he goes to put ball down knocking the ball back to the field of play. Pats player dives on ball, scuffle breaks out, Galvin & a Pats player are sin-binned. Westfield get the penalty for offside and some disciplined attack see big centre Roy Quiroz-Mapusua barge over & then convert for the victory!

Galvin, Will Craig (wing) & Daniel Waqa (playing fullback for an injured Luke Laulilii) were standouts for Westfield, all WT pathways, as was Mapusua who commentators believe is coming over to our system next season from Manly.

Sounds like a big win missing probably their second best player in Laulilli. I believe almost the entire 17 is with WT.

Hopefully we can hang on to the key ones. Galvin being managed by Moses is a worry though.

Onitoni large looks like a man amongst boys . Very Sualiii like. Not sure he’s. 6 . Maybe eventually . Could be a 1 , maybe , but I think he will start out his first grade career in the centres , maybe even move into the back row if he starts to slow down . He has a bit of SBW about him . Not saying he’s the same class , but it’s there for all to see I reckon .

His first big challenge will be what he can do against men who can tackle.

You'll notice with Large in a lot of his footage, he makes lots of line breaks going himself, because he's such a big and graceful runner. But he's obviously up against defenders who are kids.

He's clearly got more strings to his bow with a good pass and vision, so I don't think it's a major concern, but adult defenders will close down many of his runs.

Tigers should be a club that links direct to another club in Queensland cup like a feeder club , we also should be doing this with a Pommy club , fingers in all pies , support a Pommy club junior system with some cash and reap the rewards

I agree with a lot of what you say and i think we should also be doing this in other countries PNG in particular

First half dominated by Westfields Sports High, up 26-0. Playing very fast rolling forward giving Galvin the dominant half plenty of time on the ball. He provides great direction along with the hooker Pritchard & has a good kicking game. Impressed with most of the forwards who are WT pathways, Will Craig & the rampaging centre Roy Quiroz-Mapasua who kicks goals from everywhere. He's reportedly joining our junior reps from Manly next season.

Real talent.
To be scorching teams at that level at 16 years of age is something very special.
If you watch the Crichton and Murray highlights they looked very similar, although played a very different way.
But I have absolutely no idea where he should be playing for WT. I know he's playing 6 at the moment, but I think centre or Fullback would suit his running style as well. Unsure what his defence is like but if he's playing 12 for Scots you would think he's reasonable defender, but I wonder if he could hold his own at centre?

Lachlan Galvin 2 tries in the first 10 mins of the National Schoolboys Final Westfields x Palm Beach Currumbin, showing good strength more than anything both times.

Thanks for the updates. I watched the game someone posted the other day. Galvin looked really good. It's school footy though. Taking that form into the NRL is hard.
