Justin Matamua #259

I think people on here forget how young he is - if he was playing Jersey Flegg which he still could people wpuld be raving about him

He gives us a passing threat at 13, his defence in Cup has been great and he runs hard and has size. It's his first starting game this weekend and he is close to the youngest forward in the nrl outside our club with a great background coming through.

IMO he will be our fulltime 13 moving forward

I don't think anyone has a problem with any of what you've said....
My issue is he's taken up a top 30 spot for 3 years - And as you've eluded to, He's not ready.
Even next year, I don't see him as a fulltime NRL 13.

I've seen him credited for turning the momentum in the game on the Weekend when he came on, I think it was the Opposite....
It's obvious how much the usual starting lock is / was a break on our football...

Does the way he play remind anyone of Heighno?

Barely does a hit up, but when he does there aren't any post contact metres.
Ball plays a little bit
Does a little shuffle at the line before hitting it up rather than running it straight
Doesn't make a solid contact in Defence but just does enough to hold up players until someone else comes in

On what he has shown me centrelink needs his skills urgently.Perhaps that is a little harsh but nothing he has shown on the field tells me he is a decent footballer

I had high hopes for him but he lacks the passion and intensity of other forwards such as Pole

He can get qualified for NDIS before Shorten (Curly) pulls the funding for sex workers.

Am I the only one that doesn't rate Matamua ?

Just doesn't stand out to me and wonder if we have a better 13 somewhere?

Definitely not the only one. I haven’t seen anything above average from him in A or D. His effort level is ordinary as well. Honestly can’t understand how people don’t see that average players taking up spots in our first 17 are simply not going to lift us off the bottom of the table. We need out and out “competitors”, “winners”, “scrappers”, guys who fight for every inch in a game. If we are at all serious about finals we should be upgrading about 10 of our current top 30 - which is probably impossible in one season, but certainly needs to happen over the next 2 years.

I watched him a few times in the juniors and his work rate is what stood out to me. It was excellent. I wonder if the extra beef he’s carrying has affected his mobility. He’s still young, only 20 I believe. Nothing wrong with him going back to reserve grade for two years and building his body and game. Then we can see where he’s at.

Nope. I think he has more than enough chances this season to show something and yet to see anything to suggest he is even close to take the step up - if anything he had been costly.

He just isn’t up to it at the moment, struggles to play longer than 20mins spurts which is a major red flag and drops his performance badly - not the motor needed as a lock / backrower.

Lazy in both attack and defence, not to mention his momentum-killing errors and penalties. Oh, and he looks like he’s auditioning to be the new Michelin man.

Another overhyped scrub who has been pushed by certain posters on here who have shown repeatedly that they don’t have a clue and should be embarrassed to show their faces on here.

Pretty hard to disagree with your assessment there , Maybe the coaching staff see something we don’t

I actually like him. He is admittedly a work in progress but I look at someone Yeo who wasn’t a regular until he was 23/24 years old and I think he has something.
i agree he goes missing a bit but some of his passes near the line are next level and our attack looks so much crisper when he is no the field. His defence appears to be adequate but not dominant and needs to work on his go forward game.
I think he may be (in time) the ball playing lock we are looking for.

Good post which I enjoyed reading. I agree he has work to do but as you have stated so did Yeo. Hopefully he works hard on his game.
