K.Walters as coach

there is a generalisation that very good players dont become a good coach. can anyone think of great coach and player?

I think there is an underlying reason behind that…

Alot of the games elite players now dont go into coaching because there are so many well payed media positions compared to the past.. That as well as they dont want the pressure of coaching after they have retired from the pressures of footy...

Personally i think the likes of Fittler, Lockyer, Johns, etc would make very good coaches, but why would they want the pressures of it when they get gun jobs with Channel 9 for top salaries and no pressure...

Bob Fulton and Clive Churchill both immortals great coaches

Mal Meninga 7 origin series wins don't count ??

It would be foolish in the extreme to appoint Walters. This team is about to enter a transitional period, involving a different style of play and having to accommodate three strong willed alpha males in the starting line up. You don't employ a rookie to manage that, you need someone like Folkes, more than equipped to keep Farah, Marshall and Anasta on track
 
Yeah i'm not sure Walters is the man for the job. However if he were to be given the job then lets give him a chance to prove himself. I got to admit though the interview he gave last week on radio, geez his answer was very suspicious like, May not have meant anything but you can understand why it would get people wondering if…..

Sure, the transitional period is a new coach with new approaches, new staff, new routines, new expectations of individuals etc. The parameters will be set by the coach, not the "strong willed alpha males" as you describe them. Walters may well be a good option if he can with him bring some of the uncompromising attention to detail and management skills learnt through years with Bellamy.
 
Whoever gets the job it will be very interesting as to who stays? does Skando stay, does Leeds stay, Mcdonald? it will be very interesting, & if Robbie goes then i think Humphries goes as well.

If we lose our captain, a player who has been a first grader with us for 10 seasons it will make us look absolutely pathetic. Our image will be shot and i dare say we very well could be the new Parra. If this happens Humpty deserves his walking papers, cos the fish rots from the head
 
Walters would be streets ahead of Parish,please don't let this bloke near our club.
 
walters is the defensive coach at Melbourne but somehow yesterdays win had belly ache written all over it.

As for Walters, while he doesn't seem the worst of candidates, the fact that he focuses on only the attack as a Storm coach is a concern. Also modern coaches are more along the lines of managers and its about not only themselves but also how they run the entire football department (including support staff). The modern trend is towards building a professional culture within the club and bringing it together as one with every part coming together to help improve the on field performances.

Did'nt you hear his interview the other night? He said that he does the attack training and Bellamy does the defence. When Sheens was coach, he did the attack and Folkes did the defence. Quite well I might add. Today's coach does not do the lot. They people manage, sponsor manage, etc, etc.

Come on Happy, I could coach that team to 7 Origin wins :laughing: Mal's just a figurehead, they would coach themselves!
 
Mick Potter has been named Super League Coach of the Year. If I'm not mistaken it's the second time in five years he's received that honour. Not a bad option for us to look at, especially now that he is returning to Australia.

I would still take Walters as well though. Forget the game plans and set moves that Melbourne have, if he can instill the culture and competitive attitude that the Storm players have I'll be a happy chappy. The way Melbourne chased kicks, forced drop outs, ran HARD at the line and put pressure on the Dogs in the GF was awesome to watch.
