there is a generalisation that very good players dont become a good coach. can anyone think of great coach and player?

Bobby Fulton, Artie Beetson, Tim Sheens, Wayne Benett, Jack Gibson …

Would not have called Bennett a great player , he was the 2nd slowest winger I ever saw
One of the fittest ever players yes

Fulton and Beetson were not great coaches, captains yes,Fulton killed easts chances in 1980 GF by warming them up to hard and too long before the game, his teams at Manly should have won more titles, they had internationals in reserve grade.

We've had some people play for Australia that were far from great players Wayne Stewart former Brisbane Wests and Brisbane Souths player did also as a winger

He is the only winger Bennett could beat in a foot race , but you would be able to use a sun dial to time them over the hundred

Each to their own opinion but you can't be too bad if you represent your country. To be honest though I've never seen him play live or in film/video.

There are 2 things that make the storm win Premierships.

1\. They have the wrestling gig down to a fine art.
2\. They have the Australian Spine.

History has shown us that the likes of Kearney, Blair, Inglis, Crocker, White, Folau, Dallas Johnson, Steve Turner… they all leave Melbourne but at the Storm the song remains the same. You can't cut and paste the way Melbourne train and play to our playing roster. It would be a disaster. I'm kinda weary from the last time we bought someone in from Melbourne. Walters could be great, but you can never be certain on anything when you appoint a new coach. You just can't.

Seriously... I wouldn't mind Brian Smith for a season and then Todd Payten getting the nod as part of a long term strategy.

WESTS Tigers will have one of the lowest-paid coaches in NRL history next year, with the three strongest candidates willing to sign on for less than $200,000 a year just to get a chance.

Kevin Walters is firming as the man most likely to replace Tim Sheens, edging ahead of Mick Potter and Matt Parish.

St Helens and former St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown was never a serious chance, having knocked back an interview request from Tigers CEO Stephen Humphreys.

Walters was interviewed for a second time on Friday and it's believed a decision on the next coach could be made in the next 48 hours. But what the Tigers can pay is being influenced by Sheens' salary of $500,000 a season and their likely payout figure.

The blowtorch will be applied to Sheens when he returns from Test duties today, with the Tigers set to impose a deadline for him to accept a senior role in the front office. His next move is full of intrigue, with influential figures at the Tigers making a behind the scenes push for Sheens to replace Bill Harrigan as the referees' boss.

If that move were to eventuate it would allow the Tigers to negotiate a reduced payout for Sheens and free up some much needed cash.

Tigers officials have a scheduled board meeting in a fortnight but are preparing to convene a special meeting this week once they have consulted Test stars Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah.
