UNSEASONABLE heat could prove a godsend for Keebra Park in their Arrive Alive Cup Queensland final against North Queensland champions Kirwan High in Townsville today.
>
Keebra coach Greg Lenton believes his troops will be aware of what's awaiting them as they attempt to bring Townsville down at Dairy Farmers Stadium.
>
Coming off a bruising 13-6 win over Gold Coast rivals and last year's national champions Palm Beach Currumbin, Keebra will be hard to beat.
>
But Lenton had warned his side that they needed to be prepared to work hard against a side who will have plenty of home support.
>
"We've been fortunate that we have had a bit of hot weather ourselves over the last week so it's not as if they are going to get off the plane going from 19C to 30C," he said.
>
"The boys should be a little better prepared than they have any other year but while I'm sure (the heat) will be a factor, particularly with the humidity and them being in their own back yard, there are simply no excuses.
>
"We know that if we want to go further in this competition these are the obstacles you have to overcome."
>
While the players knew little of their rivals, they were well aware of their potential.
>
Kirwan will head into the game full of confidence following victories over Yeppoon's St Brendan's College and their recent 32-14 win against Townsville rivals Ignatius Park in the North Queensland final.
>
Keebra captain Jordan Kahu, who tore PBC apart in their South Queensland final win, said it was important their pack laid the foundations.
\
\
"We need to use our big strong forwards and defend hard," said Kahu, who will head to the Wests Tigers next season.
>
"If we can do that and dominate early we can get over the top of them.
>
"But it's important we just treat this like any other game and don't get overawed."
>
Lenton agreed and while he didn't know much about his opposition he knows they are stacked with talent.
>
"We don't know a great deal about (Kirwan) but they have some very good footballers and a lot of talent across the park," he said.
>
"We have to try and dominate in the middle of the park and play good field position but that will come down to our control and our discipline."
