Anyone could forgive flashy Wests Tigers winger Keith Lulia if he retired from rugby league.

He’s not a huge name but epitomises the amazing courage and durability of every player who sets foot onto an NRL ground.

On Tuesday while we were all partying and watching the Melbourne Cup, the Wests Tigers utility player was undergoing a delicate four-hour operation to repair a broken neck. Then 24 hours in intensive care.

Brave Lulia aims to beat broken neck
Keith Lulia recovers in hospital after surgery on his broken neck.
Surgeons at Prince of Wales had to cut bone from his hip and use three screws to attach it to the fractured vertebra to hold it together. To make it strong enough to withstand the impact and collisions of playing footy again.

All from an innocuous tackle on Kane Linnett against the Cowboys back in August.

Incredibly he will be back doing contact work at Wests Tigers’ training in just eight weeks and hopes to be fit to play in the opening round of 2015.

It’s a serious injury that would convince lesser men to give the game away. But this man is no quitter and retirement is not an option.

TAYLOR A BETTER COACH FOR TIGERS’ NEW ERA

wish him the best of luck with the recovery.. very lucky to not have any spincal cord damage by the sounds of it.

we've had some freak injuries.. tim moltzen and tedesco with the fractured patella, broken vertebrae, robbie's broken elbow earlier- list goes on…

most of these injuries are not preventable.. there is nothing the S&C dept. can do that can prevent these injuries. if bad luck like this persists, i wouldnt be surprised to see a few injuries so i hope everyone doesn't expect miracles from the new dept.

While you have to admire Keith's courage, sometimes you have to weigh up whether it's worth the risks. He's probably in his last year and is only borderline 1st grade. Good luck to him anyway. Let's hope he's got a few more games in him like the Canterbury one.

Keith's situation makes me realise how as a supporter I can sometimes forget what these players put their bodies through. Good luck with the recovery Keith.

Geez I really do wish him a speedy recovery but surely the risks of repeat injury far outweigh playing again in 2015.
Tough mofo thats for sure

Beau Ryan made the right choice. League is a young mans game.. and you're along time retired from footy. You don't want to be thinking I should have retired one year earlier for the rest of your life.

Lulia has a 16-month old son, Koa, with wife Kelly, and the 27-year-old says will do nothing that puts his family at risk.

“The trouble is I’m not qualified to do anything else,” he said.

“I was one of those kids that went straight from school into rugby league. You never know what’s going to happen but I’m hopeful it will all work out.”

This bit was left out of the OP is the saddest of all….I hope Keith thinks seriously about this comeback and wish him all the best....

When these things are repaired they are generally stronger than before, so the chances of a recurring injury are low. Whilst it would be a scary thing to go through, there is no more risk to Keith in the future than there is for any other player.

I hope he makes a full recovery and completely agree with Tigermama, he should enroll himself in some kind of course or do a trade, become qualified and prepared for a life after footy.

Totally agree with these quotes. However I wish Keith a speedy recovery :sign:
