Anyone could forgive flashy Wests Tigers winger Keith Lulia if he retired from rugby league.
He’s not a huge name but epitomises the amazing courage and durability of every player who sets foot onto an NRL ground.
On Tuesday while we were all partying and watching the Melbourne Cup, the Wests Tigers utility player was undergoing a delicate four-hour operation to repair a broken neck. Then 24 hours in intensive care.
Brave Lulia aims to beat broken neck
Keith Lulia recovers in hospital after surgery on his broken neck.
Surgeons at Prince of Wales had to cut bone from his hip and use three screws to attach it to the fractured vertebra to hold it together. To make it strong enough to withstand the impact and collisions of playing footy again.
All from an innocuous tackle on Kane Linnett against the Cowboys back in August.
Incredibly he will be back doing contact work at Wests Tigers’ training in just eight weeks and hopes to be fit to play in the opening round of 2015.
It’s a serious injury that would convince lesser men to give the game away. But this man is no quitter and retirement is not an option.
