**Kent blasts Tigers’ player revolt over Maguire’s ‘I need men’ comment**

July 11th, 2021 3:04 pm
Paul Kent has launched a stinging attack on the Tigers players after reports some stars have turned on coach Michael Maguire after a comment he made after the loss to the Rabbitohs.

Maguire said in his press conference that he needs men at the club, which ruffled a few feathers amongst the playing group.

“They lost to the Storm 66-16 on the Sunshine Coast and it was a very similar story to their opening half against the Bunnies at Leichhardt Oval,” James Hooper said on Triple M.

“So the players can point fingers and blow up and blame Madge and try and throw off everywhere else, but in relation to the comment that he said about “I need men” like we are all adults.

“Boo hoo, cry me a river like who cares? Get over it.”

Gordon Tallis believes the Tigers club need to support their coach, so that things like player revolts don’t happen.

“The people around him need to support him,” Tallis said.

“So when the players go and whinge to the assistant coach, to the trainers, to the board members, to the CEO it falls on deaf ears.”

“Managers and media are the main ones,” Hooper interjected.

“Too bad because they keep doing it, so who do they have Tim Sheens, Michael Potter, Jason Taylor, Ivan Cleary. There is four in what 10 years?” Tallis said.

Kent called on Maguire to find the players responsible and move them out of the club immediately.

“The best thing Michael Maguire can do is find out who the players are and move them on,” Kent said.

“A lot of good coaches who stick around for a while they identify very quickly who the cancers are in the joint. The guys who [This word has been automatically removed] and moan.

“When you see players in a dressing room starting to get into their little groups that is when you have got to be wary.

“Once they start doing that and if you don’t know what they are talking about and if they are having a [This word has been automatically removed] and moan about your coaching or whatever they are the guys you have got to move on.”

Tallis called on the senior players to squash player revolts before they happen.

“I think you need strong leadership and the senior guys just go, listen guys shut up this is what we are doing,” Tallis said.

“I didn’t agree with all my coaches, but whatever he said he is the boss. That’s it he is the boss and whatever he tells you to do you do it.

“Just shut up and get on with it and after training you can say hey Mate why did we do that? But you never do it on the spot.”

Kent believes the Tigers don’t have enough players that want to win a premiership and they need to move on those that are merely just happy being NRL players.

“I’ll tell you a couple of facts about the Tigers, one they don’t have good enough players to win the comp,” Kent said.

“Two they don’t have tough enough players to win the comp. Three the administration hasn’t been strong enough in terms of standing up to the players because the club is just continually rotating through coaches.

“They have identified Michael Maguire as a coach who has won premierships at two different competitions with two different teams.

“He has got the ability to do it, so they have identified him as the guy that can do it for them so now they have got to stay the course as well.

“What they have got to the players is get on board or get going. It is as simple as that.

“To continue to let this club [This word has been automatically removed] and moan through another season of non-performance and let’s remember no club has gone longer without making the finals than this Tigers club.

“They haven’t made the finals since 2011 so the fact is they are not doing the right job. I don’t think there is enough Tigers players who want to win a comp.

“I was talking to a coach the other day and he said there is not enough winners here. They are just happy to play first grade.

“This is an issue that has been identified by a few other clubs.

“There is not enough players at the Tigers who are burning to win a comp. They are happy playing first grade.

“They like being known as first grade players who brush pass the line when they go to the nightclub. They get a couple of drinks vouchers when they get into the nightclub and all the pretty girls come up and ask them for a dance.”

“It’s a lifestyle for them,” Tallis said.

“Exactly Gordon, but for the great ones they want to win,” Kent said. (117)

Hard not to agree - when you get paid the same or better money than better players in better teams and the coach wears the blame when you fail - attracts a certain sort of mentality.

100% agree with him. How many coaches have we got rid of due to players. We need to change the culture of our club we need to get rid of the players that complain. I watch them every week and it looks like that don’t care if they win or lose the players have no passion not all but a few

Kenty is alright.

I think many of us on here have already identified, some time ago, those players bludging on their teammates. I bet if we compared notes there would be some common denominators. So why can't/won't those in power do something about punting them? The excuse for inaction cannot be the salary cap - we don't use it all. We should be prepared to take a hit anyway just to get rid the cancers.

You’re right about that!
Identify the recalcitrants find out what they’re sulking about , then drop them to KOE until they can be moved on.
It’s something which needs to be done swiftly, without favour. The longer it is left unresolved the more complex the solution.
What exactly happened before, during and after the round 4 game?
What does James Tamou mean by underlying issues?
And why do they need resolving for the team to be more effective?
Why does Nofa get a long term contract on big money and do less defensively?
So many questions but very few answers.

We've gotten rid of players too. Staff, admin, CEO, chairman everyone.

Changes have to come internally. Who we have now, we need them to perform. If someone better comes along, then great but we need every member of WT to perform better.

Threatening them that they may get fired will only help for a week or two. Need to internally motivate all people in the orgnisation. Have some pride in yourself and the organisation. For some, they probably think getting out of here is probably a blessing.

This is 100% why we need to stick with Madge and the current Team. They have the passion and previous success to know what is required to build in Sustained Success.

I look at Melbourne Storm as the NRL Gold Standard

**Discipline, Hard Work, Team work and Simplicity**. They rarely buy Marquee players, The develop them and the next one comes in when he is next....

This is also the Madge way.

I think 20-40 knew that

Gordie should be the poster child for HIA awareness. He reckons players 'got rid of' Cleary? Sorry Gord, doesn't sound as good as 'Ivan lied to the club, and players, and scurried off to another club mid-contract'. Fair enough to have a say on WT matters but don't go making complete crap up just to suit the narrative.
He also said 'just get on with the job, the coach is the boss, do what he says'. Coming from a bloke who has still got major sand-in-the-bikini syndrome with Wayne Bennett because he started him from the bench in his last game 15 YEARS AGO. Just get on with it Gordie hey.
Everybody knows our club has got big problems, these gossip journo's think they are geniuses for highlighting it ad nauseum. There's a few other clubs in the comp that are going as bad if not worse than WT but get a free pass in the media more often than not.

Well said. The hard road would be to weed out the players causing the mess, the easy road would be to get rid of McGuire and hope the mess goes away.
Our club will undoubtedly choose the easy road, we always have, that's why we have been a laughing stock for so long.

What player revolt? Some journo mentioning a few supposed text messages is now a revolt?

Seriously, journos live in their own fantasy world. They create stories and react to their headlines to create another story. Very occasionally a real story breaks which they then use to fabricate more stories and on it goes.

We do have a number of players with no guts when the going gets tough and their managers do whine to the media....Get rid of the power managers have over clubs like the Tigers....

What Paul Kent said is spot on. We have a core of first grade players. It does not appear that we have too many blokes who are prepared to do more or to want more than that. We are a Soft Option Club. Why are we? Because we have never stared a player or players manager down. Matterson ,in my view started the rot. He kicked stones and we capitulated after saying we wouldn't. The old adage was thrown out that at the end of the day do you want a $400k player kicking stones around the club? Well I bet 6 weeks in reggies would have sorted that out and even if it didn't ,players would know that sort of attitude gets you nowhere but reggies. As I said, a Soft Option Club.
