Knights prop Korbin Sims will join the Broncos effective immediately
January 20, 2017 12:04pm
Barry Toohey

NEWCASTLE prop Korbin Sims is poised to quit the club to immediately join the Brisbane Broncos after securing a release from the final year of his contract at the Knights.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Sims approached the Knights more than a week ago about his interest in linking up with former coach Wayne Bennett in Brisbane and was told the club would not stand in his way if he secured a deal.

It’s understood Sims and the Broncos agreed to terms overnight with Sims informing the Knights on Friday.

The sticking point had been Sims’ $400,000 Knights contract with coach Nathan Brown telling the front-rower the club would not be topping up any deal he signed with the Broncos to leave.

It’s understood he has agreed to take a significant pay cut this year to sign a longer term deal north of the border.

The loss of Sims continues a horror pre-season for the Knights with playmaker Jarrod Mullen suspended and facing a career-ending ban after testing positive to a prohibited drug and forward Pauli Pauli sidelined indefinitely with a dislocated hip after being involved in a serious car accident.

Experienced hooker Rory Kostjasyn is also highly unlikely to be fit for the start of the season after suffering a serious throat injury in a freak training mishap.

Have heard that the Knights are clearing the decks to offer Matt Scott a 2 year 1.8 million contract for next year

I saw it reported as $1.5mil over two years but who knows. They are going to be a serious player in the market given how much they've lost recently - T Sims, K Sims, J Mullen, J Smith, R Rochow, J Tapine, K Snowden, A Uate…several million dollars in cap space.

Looking at who they have locked up for 2018 it seems likely they will be targeting a strike outside back, a strike prop, some prop depth and a top playmaker at either hooker or 5/8.

2\. Ken Sio
3\. Nathan Ross

7\. Trent Hodkinson

If they miss out on Matt Scott they'll probably come after Woodsy and you'd have to think they'll be in the market for Mitch Moses as well.

If Woods and Moses are dead keen on securing a boat-load of wooden spoons in the years to come then yep the Knights is the club to join. Good luck to 'em.

Trent Hodkinson will get the flick too.
He's average and he clearly doesn't wanna be a Knight or play for the Knights.

EARLY PREDICTION -

Ben Hunt, released early - joins Dragons now.
Benji plays halfback for the Broncos for 2017.
Broncos sign Ash Taylor from the Titans 2018 onwards.

They can have Rankin, and take him for this season.

So with Sims going to the Broncos who is making way in the forwards. My guess would be Ofahengaue to QLD cup to cover injuries and back in the squad next year presuming Thaiday retires.

8\. Adam Blair, 9\. Andrew McCullough, 10\. Josh McGuire, 11\. Matt Gillett, 12\. Alex Glenn, 13\. Jai Arrow. Interchange: 14\. Kodi Nikorima, 15\. Tevita Pangai Jr., 16\. Joe Ofahengaue, 17\. Sam Thaiday.

I wish it was Pangai Jr and we somehow found some of the Broncos brown bags. He is going to be a gun.

Yeah I think Joe O will miss out but I wouldn't be surprised to see McGuire start at lock and then come back on at prop with Arrow coming off the bench. They'll want 55-60 out of McGuire this year I think.

Lots of spots up for grabs at Brisbane… I've heard the McGuire to 13 theory, Mitchell Dodds [Wayne's Boy] is back & Caleb Timu will also be in the mix.

There Back 5 is a bigger lottery with Moga, Pearson & Opacic looking to get 1 jumper

I'm not sure any of them will get a run unless Roberts gets punted:

1\. Boyd
2\. Oates
3\. Kahu
4\. Roberts
5\. Mead
