OFFICIAL Lachlan Galvin #277

We all hope he re-signs, but we have a contingency in place should he not. Bula demonstrated last game while playing 5/8 as well as fullback, that pace, acceleration and ball playing are required in the halves. He made breaks and created opportunities against the Eels. Fainu has these attributes as well as a strong defensive technique. I am not going to compare players noting that you refer to a switch from 6 to 13 for Galvin.
Bula excites me so much. He already has his defence sorted at this stage of his career, which is usually the last part a lot of fullbacks build in their game. So much untapped potential there where he could improve his playmaking.

This might be contradictory to previous points I’ve made re Galvin. I’ve questioned his speed in play at the five eight position but yet he showed on the weekend it’s not how quick you move, it’s how quick you are between the ears.
That kick back inside, Lachie was quick enough to lead the way. But an even bigger play was his ability to pick up a loose ball and not only sum up his options within seconds but put in a perfectly timed, placed kick to score from.
If it is a question of how big he could get when he fills out. Well Matt Burton has filled out and is almost twice the size of Lachie Galvin yet he has only been mentioned as a Centre option if not in his regular 5/8 position and not once mentioned as a forward.

They key to retaining Galvin, or any of the juniors at this point, is finding a way to get the best players on the field at the same time.

A number of us have suggested moving Galvin into the forwards. I'm one of those. But really, it's because I want to see Latu Fainu on the field too.

We have a current weakness in the second row, lock & the centres (arguably on all accounts). So fitting Galvin into the back row, or Fainu into the centres, Mason into the centres- whatever the layout might look like- the important part is not letting high quality players wither in reserve grade, or be forced out looking for opportunity, while we have players like Seyfarth etc keeping them out of the team (no disrespect to Seyfarth, but compared to Galvin & Fainu- who would you rather sacrifice?)

Galvin played second row in our successful Harold Matts squad. Just because he wears 11 or 12 doesn't mean he has to play like Liam Martin. Gavin Miller & Wade Graham were very good second rowers that are polar opposites of what seems to be the 'modern second rower'.

Same goes for Fainu, or Galvin, if they played in the centres.

He’s got his personal D sorted, no doubt.
He has more work on in regards to team D, and on the line D.
But yeah it’s nice to have a FB who can catch and defend well again.
How good is watching him run at pace and swerve? He looks like a silk ribbon weaving through the defence.
The Dream.

No one who was critical of Galvin thinks that. It was more in context of the talk of big money contracts and moving clubs when he has a lot to learn still.

He's a good player, but $1 million or more is for good player + consistency. It's why people are so baffled at the Brown deal.

Further, I think fans can see the club is in decent shape and don't want to be mucked around by a greedy manager trying to squeeze every last cent out of us, while simultaneously having us in the papers each week about the issue.

Let's put it this way. His manager can come out tomorrow and say give us $xxx and we will sign now...but no, he's going to market. You can see why people say if he's not committed, let's move on fast so it doesn't derail what we are building.

I hope we keep him, but I hope we don't end up blowing our cap to do it.
Twaly did the same, went to market, and got less.

Question. What we do know is, if Galvin signs with say Bulldogs there’s a decent commission for his agent.
However, if Tigers extend Galvin’s contract, does his agent get paid?

are you happy to pay Galvin $1mil plus a year to play second row ? I don’t see that happening … no way his agent , him or his family are copping a move to the forwards and the subsequent reduction in salary … I’m sure another club will happily pay him to play at 6 after seeing what just happened with Brown…

They are going to have to make Latu work somewhere else if Galvin stays …maybe we only end up having JL two years … Im sure the new Perth team would love to have him as a marquee player when they come in 2027!

The good thing about the market is that it determines players' value, not parents or the players themselves.

Why do people keep bringing up moving Galvin from the halves to the backrow???

He's already a good player in the halves and halves are by far the most important players on the field. Why would we move one of the best young players in the game from one of the most important positions to one where we don't know if he'd be as successful and is also a less important position? That's not even taking into account that there's so few quality halves in the comp as is, and a bunch of them are already in their 30s and very close to retirement.

Anyway, re-signing Galvin is a must. His ceiling is sky high. He could realistically continue to improve each year for the next 5-10 years. Dylan Brown's played with a premier halfback on finals quality teams and has been in first grade for five years. He's pretty much who he is at this point and managed to get an offer of $1.3m a year. If we could lock Galvin up for a few years on anything less than a mil a year, that should be seen as a huge win because he'll likely outperform the contract over time even if he's overpaid initially.

Sure we've got Fainu, but it's total nonsense to suggest that we should be ok with losing a 19 year old future star because we've got another one who's not proven as much waiting in the wings. I'd much rather lose Luai than Galvin given their respective ages and ceilings.

Still leaves us short a 2nd rower if he's "just wearing 11 or 12"

The market is about to be expanded by two teams, and according to what PVL is saying … a bloated new TV deal
That's fine and our club determines how to balance its books noting the largess will be divided by two additional teams. We have Galvin for the next two years. There will be few teams where he is playing alongside a half of the calibre of Luai.

I have every confidence Richo will do everything he can to retain Galvin … probably offer him over a $1m a year to stay 2027 and beyond … I don’t know if this will convince him to stay …. But I think they will make the offer to him in a month or two … and if he doesn’t take it then he is as good as gone …

I also think what happens with JL is something to watch … don’t be surprised if Perth offers him $1.5m a year to be their big name recruit to kick off their inaugural season in 2027 … they would be mad not too…at least the Tigers will know by then what is happening with Galvin … so they might just have to match the other offer

Hopefully Galvin signs an extension, we have latu fainu he no doubt will be a good halves partner for Luai however he is not and will never be a Glavin,

Galvin will be elite at the end of his career
possibly from a 6 to a ball playing 13 like fitlwr and yeoh. If we fail to re-sign Galvin it will be a big blow to the club
Or, more to the point;

- We don't know the ceiling of either player, nor do we know the trajectory of their careers.

They both look very promising. Keep them both.

It would be a new contract so yes. If this is your thinking it’s even more likely to favour us as a deal could be done from now until November this year.
A follow up question re signings.
I’ll use Brown as an example.
Does the agent get paid the commission now as the deal has been brokered now and announced or does it start from November this year?

The ideal for a player manager would be for clubs to get into bidding. Richardson is far too savvy for that and you would think he has a figure the club is prepared to pay (and afford) noting Luai is the marquee signing. Bula also is right up there now as one of our best.
