Its a trope.
The whole Madge was too tough was debunked by S burgess and others after he left. He was white anted by Seibold but the trope survives and then lazy or clueless “journalists” simply fall back onto these tropes when nothing else to go on.

This was also confirmed by a poster on this site who's cousin (I think) is a current South's player and who played under Madge. His cousin told him that the story that Madge had lost the dressing room was false and that he was popular with the players. The cousin suggested it was Siebold that was behind the rumours.

When news emerged that Matterson wanted out he was widely condemned as a mercenary. Matterson's management went into damage control and used the "Madge as the hard task master" trope to justify the action.

It has become conventional wisdom now and people who have an agenda use it against Madge.

It’s fine to support him in the short term, but if the players are still unhappy this time next year, he will be gone.

Actually, this time next year, around 50% of the current playing group will be gone for 2022.

That’s irrelevant. If we’re still languishing in the same position we are now, I doubt the board we will be in a rush to extend. And I love how everyone assumes the only players that are unhappy are the ones that will be gone next year.

It is not irrelevant, it is very much to the point. You said that if the playing group are still unhappy this time next year "he (Madge) will be gone". A statement of fact.

That was the only issue I sought to address. I made the point that this time next year half the playing group will be either gone or on their way out. I think that it's quite possible that a sizable proportion of the playing group will not be happy this time next year, possibly as much as 30% of next year's squad.

I imagine that decisions to extend a coach, especially one that is engaged in a roster clean-out, are based on many more considerations than whether an element of the playing group are unhappy.

When you say " I love how everyone assumes the only players that are unhappy are the ones that will be gone next year", I don't assume that. I was assuming that the 50% of the current squad who will be gone by 2022 would constitute a significant pool of unhappiness.

If, on the other hand, Madge has actually alienated the nucleus of the good players we wish to retain, such as Aloiai, Twal, Nofo, etc, then I reckon you are right and Madge will be gone next year. But do you have any inside info on that ?

I have none. I just know that a coach that is on the nose isn’t sustainable in the long term. I think he results next year.

Why should fans support the club when the players think they’re above the club and try to get coaches booted all the time because THEY aren’t playing good enough. It seriously pisses me off big time!

I’m supporting blokes like Nofa, AD, Luciano and Aloiai, not many others currently think ??‍♂️

Chuck in Twal and Liddle as well and that's a pretty strong core to build a team around.

Pretty much.

In saying that, Pitt is right up there with Buzz for incompetent reporters so who knows what's true.

Got an ego too, she’s done a few of those 360 shows where kenty and ikin cut her off and she’s filthy. Which is LOL because 1 is a QLD legend the other a journo since the late 90s and actually played first grade . Also ITs THIER SHOW!

I think she feels the need to have a hot take . Ts very American like that . Come in all guns blazing Stephen A smith style . Except that dude has charisma

Not that I watch shows like 360, but the further away our presenters are from over the top blowhards like US sports presenters, the better.

Madge admits himself he needed to learn from his mistakes at Souths

The story that does the rounds the most I've heard was in 2014 pre season they went to one of these military style training camps and a senior Souths player walked up to Madge and told him he was leaving pre season training because it was too tough

The minute this player spoke up Madge eased off

Here's hoping Lee H and the board stand behind Madge. I think they will. If certain players find Madge lacks communication skills, then maybe they should just start playing with some guts and determination. I'm sure those communication problems would disappear instantly!
Players who don't want to play under him need to ask for a release. I'm sure that it would be granted in a split second.
Otherwise, players should shut the hell up and start playing to a standard that is expected of them.
Talk about pampered, soft bellied, over paid and under performing whingers!

That’s a joke right?
A professional athlete complaining that the training is too hard for him 😂
I would like to think it’s true and that the training was that hard that it took players to limits they have not been to. However, I think it’s a myth designed to give Madge an envious reputation. Jack Gibson had a similar persona.

NRL360 - Lara is spruiking that she has the inside word on player dissent over Madges’s communication style. Thinks he isn’t giving players respect or a reason when they’re dropped. Even dug up his Souths dramas as evidence he rubs players the wrong way. Any ideas who she’s matesy with? She really seems to have it in for him. 🤔

Well I saw the show last night and thought most things said were pretty much positive.
Obviously Lara got some goss from a disgruntled player or two but both Hooper and Kent were pretty spot on and for once I agree with most things that were said.
Hooper is becoming WT agent on the show so that’s a change. I think he might be close to the the club right now not like that bum Crawley who has been banned and rightly so!

The player was Ben Te'o. Sam Burgess has talked about it quite a few times.

Didn't Sergeant Major Maguire read a bedtime story for the luvvies?

Here is an appropriate response

I do not want training accidents on my watch. Rest assured I will not hesitate to arrange a training accident if you do not meet my standards.

not trying to toot my own horn but i mentioned this was coming. I had it mentioned that there are some disgruntled dudes at the top. Its created a division in the squad with alot of the younger players silently backing madge. Its our higher profile dudes that are causing the issues.

It’s the higher profile duds that need to pull their collective heads in and start performing on the park. Nothing annoys me more than players who undermine the coach. This is what happens when players are paid more than they deserve.

It’s also no coincidence that the the highest paid players are the ones recruited by IC.

I say good on Madge for ruffling the precious little darlings feathers.

Yup.

Wait until the development players can play next year then pay them out and get them out. Put a clause in they can’t play NRL

Packer and Reynolds will be surplus by then if still here

They need to go.

I think they are just his journo mates trying to stick the boot in. He does work there after all.

Also they love the drama. It's become boring putting the boot into the Broncos and a lot of other teams have no flavour at the moment - Manly, Raiders, Roosters, Souths, Cowboys - there's hardly anything to write about on them.

My main concern is the leaking from the club. It’s happened to often to be coincidence or journos guessing.

Manly are in a similar predicament right now with big money tied up in a few players and very poor depth. No underpaid underperforming players are going to journos screaming for Dessies’ head, why always us?
