Learning to read...

I am actually hoping there are not too many new faces introduced into the 3/4 line for 2010\. I really feel that Ryan, Ayshford, Moltzen, Lawrence, Tuiaki are forming something very special to be able to read Marshall a lot better than in previous years. Almost an unwritten understanding of each other.
Even back in 2005 i felt that there was really only one player in the backs who could read Benji. And that was Patty Richards. Hodgo is a shoe-in as he is just a class SUPPORT player, but to actually read an unpredictable player is something that is beyond just being a good footy player.
There seems to be some sort of cohesion or "click" that we all haven't seen in the past 2-3 years. Perhaps it could be now with Marshall becoming a more matured, confident, injury free player, that all this is now starting to take shape.
Over the past few years i have always maintained, The WT attack has been well below par, where others have said their attack is the best in the comp due to their flamboyant style. But it was little things that went un-noticed for eg. when WT had the ball for 2-3 sets straight and failed to capitalise and put points on the board, then they turned over possession and the opposition would punish them by racking up points straight away.
This last season with the introduction of Moltzen to help take some pressure off, and really add some class and unpredictability himself, has seen the WT score plenty more tries which in previous years they would've bombed.
So the tries are now starting to stick, passes aren't being thrown into the 12th row of the stands, less balls are going to ground.
So what i'm really trying to say is: the backline still needs slight fine-tuning as IMO there is ONLY 1 spot up for grabs(if that), but don't overhaul the backs and add too many new faces for now.

it's hard to argue with any of that

Trivia:
Remember how people were saying Benji wouldn't last with his shoulders? Well, touch wood, but here is an amazing stat.
Benji last injured his shoulder on Saturday 5 May 2007
Assuming that he is okay at the moment, it has been 978 days or 2 years, 8 months, 2 days since his last injury

on Friday 29 January 2010 Benji will be able to celebrate 1000 days of no shoulder dislocations!

onya benji!

I feel there is only need to change one wing spot.

I would give Brown a go on Ryan's wing. Ryan was most often out of sync with Marshall last season. He tried his guts out to make up for that but Brown would be a better option.

However Ryan's defensive combination with Ayshford worked a treat so it is not an easy decision

Ryan was great as soon as he had Ashford inside him. The only bad games of his that I can remember was when he was lined up with Collis. Maybe we have lost the bad link?

I think Beau has definitely earned his starting position on the wing unless someone really outperforms in the trials!

Agreed, but which position would be up for grabs. I'll assume you meant the no. 1 jersey, where there are plenty of possibles. Mullaney, Taumata, Brown, Tuqiri? It could end up being a merry go round!! I have a funny feeling though that if tuqiri isn't up to speed with his pace then it'll be off to the wing and moltzen will head back to number 1\. I just wish that lote was here doing off season training with the boys. It'll be tough for him first up.

Don;t suppose anyone knows how Tui's ankle's going? There'll probably need to be a replacement for him for the first few weeks at least? That may earn Ryan a reprieve.

Something else that Moltzen and Ayshford added last season was the ability to run through defences themselves. They both made quite a few breaks/ half breaks with ball in hand through some deceptive strength & footwork. That really helps Benjis game.

& Kul - wonderful as that stat is I really hope that post doesn't come back to bite Benji.

don't expect too much from TNT early on.
he no doubt will have to gain confidence.
am hoping that he will come on strong from mid season.

Bugger that, back to top form from day one, trampling opponents like speed humps, tries left right & centre.

would be nice to see it happen straight off 😛ray: , am thinking he will have to re-gain the fitness he lost whilst in plaster etc, strength in the leg etc. when pat richards broke his leg, took him a while to come on strong, the same may occurr with TNT.
only time will tell

Don't forget TNT was pretty tentative in 2008 when he had bad hamstring problems. We never saw the best of him that year. Hopefully Folkes will be working TNT hard to get his fitness up though. I imagine he's probably doing a lot of bike work at the moment.

I'm hoping he doesn't come back too tentative, that ruined his 2008 season.
Hopefully this time around he will be very hungry after missing the four nations.

Lote is my preffered Number 1,Lote's size will more than offset is any lack of speed.

It will be good to have 6ft + full back

I fully agree - Very Good Point CT - Tigers Attack against the run of play or at a breakdown in play was No1, however their ability to build and maintain pressure resulting in points was often let down by spectacular but low percentage plays. I think this is well on the way to leaving Benji's game.

Final note - Ryan, Ayshford, Moltzen, Lawrence are all still very young.

Final Final Note - Bring on 2010….
