Legend Ben Elias says Wests Tigers split down middle

DRAMAS at the Wests Tigers aren't just consigned to the club's football side.

In this expansive interview, Ben Elias - a former Tigers director and Balmain legend - has revealed there is "animosity and conflict" between the joint-venture factions at board level.

Elias also accused the Western Suburbs faction of leaking boardroom information, and he denied any behind-the-scenes involvement in the sacking of coach Tim Sheens last year.

Bulldog: You are on the inside at Wests Tigers, the joint venture. Has it worked?

Elias: We won a premiership in 2005 and success is defined by the scoreboard. We have been in the semi-finals many times. I would have to say yes, I suppose.

Bulldog: That's hardly a convincing answer.

Elias: No, it's not convincing, far from it. I equally say St George Illawarra hasn't been convincing.

Bulldog: Do the two clubs, Balmain and Wests, get on at board level?

Elias: No.

Bulldog: Why not?

Elias: There are massive conflicts. I don't know the specifics that go on in the boardroom but you can see by the comments made publicly there is no unity. There is a lot of animosity among the two parties. We need an independent chairman.

Bulldog: That has to be unhealthy, Benny?

Elias: I have always said you need a healthy side off the field, as you do on the field. We have managed so far to be quite resilient. Unfortunately, this year we seem to be really struggling on the field.

Bulldog: Leaked information from the boardroom emerged in the media recently. Did that disturb you?

Elias: It was very disappointing as an ex-player, an ex-director and a current supporter of Wests Tigers. Information was leaked to the media. That stuff should stay in the boardroom. There are only a few select people who would have been given that precise information and I can assure you (the leaks) wouldn't have come from the Balmain side of the board. They (Wests) shouldn't forget Balmain carried them financially for the joint venture's first few years. We are in this together.

Bulldog: Do the Wests' side of the joint venture have more money than Balmain?

Elias: I don't know the answer to that.

Bulldog: Are the Tigers' finances in a concerning state?

Elias: I believe they are financially sound. If they are signing players like Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah long term then they must be alright.

Bulldog: Do you want Balmain back?

Elias: I would love to see Balmain back. Absolutely.

Bulldog: Did you think Tim Sheens' dismissal last year was fair?

Elias: It was time to go for Tim. It really was. You can't knock Tim Sheens' record. He has done everything in the game but he was at the club for too long. The impact had gone and they had to get someone new. I think Tim knew it was time.

Bulldog: A prickly question, Benny. Did you have any involvement in Sheens' demise?

Elias: No.

Bulldog: Mick Potter took over. You have a horrendous injury toll but the team is running last.

Elias: We have a massive amount of injuries. We don't know what Mick can do. I know he is doing his best.

Bulldog: Benji Marshall. There are reports he may soon sign a new $4 million deal. Is he worth it?

Elias: Benji Marshall is without doubt one of the superstars of the NRL. Yes, he is worth the money.

BENNY Elias captained NSW in 1990 and 1991\. He is an Origin legend. Today he has called for the inclusion of South Sydney's John Sutton as NSW five-eighth.

Bulldog: What do we have to do to win this year's series?

Elias: We have to do something different. Laurie Daley says he had his side picked two weeks ago. Let's start training now then. At least get the players together and start getting their heads right.

Bulldog: Announce it now then?

Elias: Why not? Let's not have any secrets. I would do something out of the ordinary.

Bulldog: OK then, what would you do?

Elias: I have been most impressed with John Sutton. I like Todd Carney too and he has a relationship with Mitchell Pearce. But we have been beaten. We have to keep changing things until we get it right. I'd go for Sutton. We have a new coach with new ideas. I think we have to have a new approach. There is a whisker between the two teams when you talk talent. All their good players are playing well though … that is a concern.

Bulldog: ASADA wants players to dob in teammates. Would you have ever done that to "Blocker" Roach or "Junior" Pearce?

Elias: No, never. At Balmain we had this look-after-your-mates mentality at all costs. That's why we were so close.

Bulldog: Where do you see your future?

Elias: I believe I can offer something in administration at the highest level. I also think we should give (NRL CEO) Dave Smith time to develop the extraordinary skills he has brought from the business world.

Bulldog: Expansion. You are involved in a Perth bid. Where should the game head?

Elias: We have to expand sooner rather than later. I think central Queensland in Rockhampton and Perth are two morals. I can assure you Perth wants rugby league.

And this guy is allowed to talk in public? Everything he says either creates more disharmony ,controversy and arguments. Allot of it was dead set dribble and rubbish.Yeah Benny NSW needs more changes ? Maybe you as coach? To create unity forever these senior members and club legends( from both sides) at least have to act as if they believe in the joint venture 100% not half hearted.

Benny needs to be very careful pointing the finger at Wests like that, without any real proof mentioned anywhere. He's always been a controversial bloke, but he may have just thrown himself into the oven with a couple of his comments.

Since this thread is very new, I'll warn all members now, please do not degenerate this into yet another personal slanging battle or it won't stay open very long.

Willow what do you mean thrown himself in the oven - he didn't mention any names and he isn't on the balmain side of the board he is free to criticise whoever he wants. Perhaps if the board worried less about infighting and backstabbing and even about what so done said in the paper who isn't on the board then they would do a better job. Couldn't do a worse job that's for sure -I say sack the whole weststigers board, appoint an Independent board and let them run the club - with votes by wests tigers members not leagues club members of clubs fading intO history

I didn't really notice him mentioning Wests at all. Anyway you'd like to think that the two factions can let this all go and focus on the future. Must be a sad bunch of old men.

wests-tigers are the present and future.

yes we should be grateful of the two foundation two clubs who merged.

it will be a very sad day, when "the infighting" could lead to demise of wests tigers.

younger generation know the team as wests-tigers, they are the ones who will support it long after the warring factions are dead and buried.

You have this comment…..

Elias: **I would love to see Balmain back.** Absolutely.

He is blowing up about leaked information. I then remember this quote Masters who we must assume discusses the leaked information:

_The Wests Group, backed by the resources of successful licensed clubs at Ashfield and Campbelltown, take an **inclusive** view, rejecting any thought of dumping Balmain and **accept it is a natural partner** both as a fellow foundation club and a historic neighbour. However, there are opportunities in the new geography of Campbelltown._

 This article really fits nicely in the Telegraph trash rag.

Nothing article from a guy who should know a lot better but has never been able to help himself when it comes to yabbering in the media.

It serves no purpose at all but to further inflame a situation which doesn't need it.

Independant chair? I say independant board

The questions are stupid

what kind of question is "ASADA wants players to dob in teammates. Would you have ever done that to "Blocker" Roach or "Junior" Pearce?"

Seriously? the question should be something like "ASADA wants players to dob in teammates. Do you think this will be effective?"

"What would you think of suspending players for not dobbing in teammates who are taking performance enhancing drugs?"

The Wests v Balmain junk almost put me to sleep

However of interest was his thoughts on expansion Perth is a moral ,but CQ that really surprises me

Personally would have thought Brisbane / Ipswich bid and the PNG bid would of been ahead of CQ

Still think that the Tigers could be relocated to CQ to get rid of the old Wests v Balmain blah blah

Might be the only way we can get rid of the old ways ,relocation

Would appreciate some good news for a change. May be some people like Elias, are inclined to just to help their personal cause, stick the boot into Wests Tigers when they are at their lowest ebb. Who cares about the old ways? In a few years time those that currently cling to the old ways will be old, resentful men. Wests Tigers has been and always will be the team for the future. Relocation is not the way. I followed Newtown before they were torn apart in 1983 and believe me I would not wish a repeat of that on any team let alone Wests Tigers.

Newtown ,the problem is the members have no control over how the club is run and the directors aren't going to change because it isn't in their interest to do so

So they are only going to choose a CEO that they can control like a puppet

I can't see how things will change honestly the Balmain v Wests :blah , and one way it might change is relocation and a complete restructure

Mightn't be popular , but would you rather have the Wests Tigers survive and prosper or would you like them to die with our old traditions

Bulldog: Do you want Balmain back?

Elias: I would love to see Balmain back. Absolutely.

idiotic. call the magpies "they" "them" etc. then in the same breath say that "We" are in this together.

what does the "do you want balmain" q. even mean?

grrrrrrrrrr… as if we werent already into enough crap, people have to do these kind of interviews, most probably to draw attention to themselves. moronic.

By his comments, Benny is clearly one of the divisive ones in the background. He needs to build a bridge and get over it.

And what's this "we've been in the semi finals many times" crap. I wouldn't call 3 out of 12 many times, I'd call it a few.

Re his idea on expansion, I for one have thought that we need to expand the NRL brand to other parts of Australia. However after seeing our team play with a number of reserve grade players for the last few weeks, and being able to barely compete (for the full 80 mins) I start to question if the NRL has enough quality competitive players to make another two teams. The NRL definitely doesn't need to have weak teams with little to no chance of winning, aka the GWS Giants.

Re competetiveness of teams I think that the third party payment system needs to be examined.

The NRL is fast turning into the haves and have nots in the same vein as the EPL. The clout of the guys driving the side and their dedication means that clubs liek Storm, Bunnies, Roosters, Broncos and Manly have more 3rd party pull and it is creating a gulf

It's especially evident in one-team towns like Brisbane, Townsville and Auckland where a lot of advertising is done using players from their respective teams. Every second billboard has a Bronco, Cowboy or Warrior on it. They're a lot more identifiable in that situation as opposed to a player in a Sydney club who gets drowned out amongst the others.

But thats the silly thing Smeg , with our last few seasons with good crowds ,squeaky clean image and our media presence you would think that we could be in the same echelon as the clubs you mentioned and 3rd party sponsors would be scrambling to get aboard

But no were not , and all the reasons are for all to see

Balmain and Wests blah blah , 3 home grounds , and gross stupidity in high places and too many people worried about their own arses , not the clubs best interests :brick:

Benny Big Mouth at it again, the walking headline, slow news day so the sports editor rings Benny, works a treat every time.

If their are major splits in the joint venture and I'am sure their isn't, than this sort of trash talk by BDB can only harm things
