**COUNCIL SEEKS WESTS TIGERS CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE**
>
Leichhardt Council has written to NSW Premier Mike Baird today seeking funding for a Centre of Excellence facility for Wests Tigers based at Leichhardt Oval.
>
Council (see letter attached) is seeking to clarify the criteria for applying to access the $40 million in funding for centres of excellence at local rugby league grounds, announced last week as part of the Government’s revised Stadia Strategy.
>
Mayor Darcy Byrne said working with Wests Tigers, Council has now developed a masterplan for a Centre of Excellence at Leichhardt Oval including expanded offices, meeting rooms, gyms and other areas for players and their teams.
>
“I am relieved that the Baird Government has now recognised the need to invest in much loved suburban rugby league grounds.
>
“It was surprising and very fortunate for the Manly Sea Eagles that the Premier awarded them $10 million for Brookvale Oval within 24 hours of the fund being created.
>
“I expect that West Tigers fans and our local community will now have the opportunity to benefit from this find and secure the future of Leichhardt Oval.
>
“Given Council has already allocated more than $3.5 million to upgrade Leichhardt Oval, State Government funding can help us make sure Leichhardt remains a NRL ground as well as becomes a hub for the local community.
>
“The approximate cost of the project is $17 million and Council is in a position to amend our plans and to allocate new funding as required to meet the Government’s criteria to access additional funding should we secure these much needed funds.
>
“This project can secure the West Tigers’ long term commitment to the Inner West but we can’t achieve this goal, which all local fans want, without Government support.
>
“The project would be able to start imminently given additional Government funding.”
>
Cr Byrne said the announcement last week that $10 million of this $40 million fund had already been granted by the Government towards the upgrade of Brookvale Oval prompted him to write to the Premier to urgently to clarify the application process.
>
“I believe the status of each as NRL grounds and community assets should be protected and secured for the future,” he said.
>
“Brookvale is a much loved suburban ground but so is our own Leichhardt Oval.
>
“Wests Tigers supporters deserve to benefit from these funds too.”

Seeing as there is only $40M being allocated and Manly have already been given $10M surely there's no chance we will get $17M.

Seeing as though the SFS and ANZ are each about 20 mins away from Leichhardt Oval, I don't see much chance of any state govt funds being allocated to upgrade the '8th wonder'.

As if a liberal govt is going to help maintain a labor/greens one.

Darcy's just put the nail in the coffin with the cheek directed at Baird there. "I am relieved that the Baird Government" or "It was surprising and very fortunate for the Manly Sea Eagles".

Not something like "Great initiative by the Baird govt to support Manly at their local ground, I hope they review the need for upgrades at Leichhardt also"

Why would we be spending money at LO when we only play there a few times a year, if we are going to spend money why no do it further West.
Put it somewhere that will be accessible to both ends of WTS area,
We have to do more to include and encourage the younger players and supporters in the Western end as well, not just those that live around Concord.
While we keep ignoring that Cambelltown is in our area, we'll keep losing Potential players to other sports/Codes.

It says Darcy is working with the Wests Tigers on this project. You've got to hope this is correct because there's a lot of goodwill between the partners right now; so having Leichhardt Council go rogue with their own plan that's not the Wests Tigers plan wouldn't be ideal.

Good old Darcy at it again i see. Grub.

why is he a grub?

Because his support for the club is pure PR

Same can be said of ISRI, Brydens, ISC, Allied, Trade Search or any of our other partners. Anyone who's going to help us out needs to at least get some PR out of it.

There's funding available, Leichardt Council is in a position to apply for it and if there's a chance of building modern training facilities that could be a very good thing. Concord is severely under resourced and possibly about to be bulldozed for WestConnex.

Again, i don't care where the COE is. Fans won't exactly be invited there on a weekly basis so it has no relevance whatsoever to fans.

Not really sure where the space is at Leichhardt for additional offices etc. There's the pool, the rehab centre and other public buildings all surrounding it.

It could make a difference to prospective signings though.

He's a peanut. Better off getting off his high horse and help passing the redevelopment of Balmain Leagues club at Rozelle.

But that would require him to actually do something.
Everyone knows he's just masquerading as a Tigers fan for popularity sake. If he was as big a fan as he makes out the Leagues club wouldn't be in the situation it is now.

They can build an indoor centre of excellence on the 5th floor of the Rozelle redevelopment. At the current rate it may be ready in about 30 years time. Leichhardt council is the cause of half of Balmains problems, and in no way a solution

The public buildings, by which I assume you mean the former asylum, isn't being used for much these days so it's feasible but highly unlikely.

I think that Balmain are the architects of their own demise but I really hope that they can keep going as part of the JV. Even if the Council had given approval, NSW State Planning would have vetoed any of the proposals put up so far. I think the developers know what's required but they probably can't see it turning a buck so they keep putting in non compliant plans, more in hope than expectation. Anyway, that's just a view from the outside looking in.
