Leichhardt Council seeks Wests Tigers Centre of Excellence

I can see the merit in why the administrations first preference was Liverpool. Location wise it's a slight compromise between our 3 regions. Plus it's a booming growth area; as is Macarthur but they probably thought they could hang onto the Mac faithfull plus pick up Liverpool. In addition, there always whispers about a new stadium at Liverpool, so we could have "owned" that region and stadium.

My issue with setting ourselves up at Homebush is the same issue I have with people suggesting we play our home games at the new Parramatta stadium; that is - it doesn't feel like our own. Tired of being a gypsy club!

It's a real disappointing outcome that the money didn't come through for Liverpool. While I think we should now try and align with the Ctown proposal I have a fear that we won't have the same "ownership/control" of it that we would have had if we had of supported it from day dot. We will just be one of many tenants. Plus there is now a good chance Liverpool will be lost to the Bulldogs and if a stadium gets built at Liverpool in the future, and we end up playing out of there, then it will feel like we are borrowing the Bulldogs home ground.

Aren't the Govt going to use Concord as a admin building for westconnex?

Wonder if they've thought of proposing a facilities upgrade at the end of it as compensation. esp since they've got all this stadia funding on the table. It really is a great location, practically next door to Ashfield Leagues.

Where exactly is there all this open space for us to develop on. There's no space at Leichhardt whatsoever, and the land that is there is either state or council owned public spaces. They're not going not be sold for private use. Close Leichhardt pool? Force local sports teams to relocate from one of the few fields available in the inner west? Move the alcohol and drug rehab clinic and the Adelaide University Nursing college?

Homebush is already pretty developed. Where would we be placing this new COE? Down near the ferry somewhere? Or we're going to setup our COE in public space so 'elite' athletes can share facilities with the local kids pissing in the pool etc? No.

If the funding for Liverpool fell through then basically Ctown is the only option left. It might shut up some of the self-entitled fans down that way too

I think theres plenty of room around Telstra stadium and the athletics field. Have a look on google earth. Probably even more room when the stadium is rebuilt.
If it depends on govt funding they might be more willing to spend money there, as they want to revitalise the area.

So, demolish the state Athletics centre? Is that what you mean? Could be an option. Not sure how much it actually gets used and could possibly be relocated elsewhere to less valuable land.

Not sure how having a league COE will revitalise the area though. There's already big business out there like Comm Bank, not sure how having 20 staff and a bunch of players coming in sporadically will help the area.

I didn't mean that our COE would revitalise the area.
When they announced the redevelopment of Telstra the govt said they wanted to put more money into the precinct to revitalise it. I'm saying it might be more likely that the govt would put money into a COE at Homebush to help do that, rather than put money into Campbelltown or leichhardt. Liverpool had already missed out.

Just on Leichhardt oval, if the council was smart, they would get a partner and build a commercial park at the back of the grandstand. You could have office suite with views over Ironcove, the sky is the limit and the rents you would gain would be a bonus on top of the football revenue. They could also carry the grand stand around and accomodate a centre of excellence and a head office on the back of the new grandstand. Will not happen but makes sense

Exactly - there is space there. Behind the main grandstand and the car-park for the pool are enough space for offices & centre of excellence building, car parking below for pool and COE, but good luck getting Leichhardt Council to agree to any sensible design & plan for that area. They want all the bonuses & kudos for the COE, none of the cost.

Id rather it remain a park for everyone by the water…but thats just me

I'm all for the Homebush proposal.

Central location, and most importantly, you will always secure government funding to upgrade facilities and remain at the cutting edge of developments, if you are sharing the facility with the AIS or other large sporting bodies.

If you're dealing primarily with local councils, then you're only a phone call away from having the whole thing fall down around your ears.

I wouldn't trust Leichhardt or Campbelltown Councils are far as I could throw them, we have simply been cash cows propping up their books for too long, and now that we have made moves away from them they don't like it one bit.

Rubbish Idea to be based in Leichardt

Liverpool is the way to go.

New facilities.

growth corridor

And a Liberal Party Mayor, Ned Mannoun,(look out for him in some State or Federal Govt pre-selection soon…talk about ambition and influence outweighing talent...here's your man!)who is incompetent and whose council is a shambles. No thanks. And, I live there and pay his salary as a rate payer!

I live and own property there. Do you?

Really? Well mate, let's arrange a meet for a coffee/drink and a chat about all things Tigers and Liverpool. Happy to post pics of the meet on here. Are you up for it?

As someone who lives in the suburb that actually funds this rabble of a club Ashfield I don't see why it shouldn't be in my council area. ALthough to be fair given Ashfield council is going to be part of the same council with those rabbles of Leichardt and Marrickville soon mayby I don't want it
