Litmus test for Madge...

Do any teams actually need to think about exploiting weaknesses when playing us? Aside from running straight and hard.

It’s not like we have some sort of minor chink in our armour.. More like we don’t have any armour at all.

both the cowboys and raiders have proved this weekend that irrespective of cattle that if you show up and defend your line like your life depends on it then you can match it with the big boys. that's where it starts. very hopeful we turn up tomorrow night but my head tells me we lose by 20+ unfortunately.

Listened to Todd post match interview last night and he said they “front loaded” their defence as it was the only way to stop Storm running away with the game in first half. Looking at the raiders game they did they same to eels and once in the fight continued all game and got the result. Looking at us , with a few exceptions like souths first game, we do the opposite and are passive and appear to try and back end the game. And, there in lies the problem, cause by the time we are ready to backend, the game is gone. Might explain why we continually start with bugger all line speed or aggression.

Don't even bother putting yourselves up to the thought that they can win this. Go in with no expectation and if they pull it off, enjoy it.

I dont know what the result will be....but Im keen as mustard to get my WTs gear on,go down to the pub and watch it with the boys....drink in celebration or drown me sorrows AGAIN....

Massive game this week for our coach.

Manly have smashed us once this season and we know where they are going to attack. Broncs game was not a test...worst halves in the comp and a poor coach. The Broncs did not exploit our weaknesses.

Tomorrow....Manly are coming at Nofa's wing...they are going to throw runners at Luc's inside arm at speed...they are going to send their speed men to get outside big Ken...their halves are going to probe inside all day when our backrowers start to arm grab...

**Everyone knows it...and it is up to the coach to game plan for it.** Stuart had half his team out on Thurs, but they had the game plan to beat Parra. Ultimately, this is what a coach has to do.

The documentary showed Madge screaming "Even at 24-6 I knew you could win!". Really? Down 18 at Canberra. How exactly were we going to come back? Yelling about pride in the jersey and being the team mates your mates want etc won't get you back into a game of modern footy.

**We need tactics and a game plan that adjusts to who we are playing every week.**

If Madge pulls off a masterstroke and we win, all the credit should go his way. If we are down 20 and gone by half time through the same old holes and flaws, then he really should take the blame. He has had them long enough. A really poor Knights team beat Manly with Turbo using a specific game plan, so it is not impossible.

Let's see. Huge test for Madge. It will shut up all the detractors if he comes up with something for the game.

And pretty much confirm what some of us fear if all he has got is "be the bloke your team mates want next to you...the jersey is special...wests tigers are always in a game...."

We need a specific game plan for Manly. That is the test.

Let's see.

Great post. Playing against one of the four teams that can win the premiership is a litmus test for Madge. The litmus test is not losing by 30.

wont see tactics on a tv show - thats dumb

No tactics on display all season mate...name one game where you can say we had a team specific game plan that worked. Name one interview where a player said one of our assistant coaches came up with an adjustment? Snoopy Collins...? Millward? Name once.

Tomorrow we will need one. Let's see.

Last week on the documentary there was a quote from Maguire telling the assistant to relay a message about a specific way to play. Obviously no detail as per my previous comment.

Is that enough?

Have a beer for all of us mate .. looks like most of us won’t know that feeling for awhile in lockdown

I live in hope we can pull off some sort performance that might unsettle manly

The absolute bottom line is EVERY team in just about all sports has one, big, rally against the odds / backs to the wall effort in them per season. Where everyone buys in and the coach / leader comes up with something that shocks the opposition.

We have not had one under Madge for a long, long time. Well over a year and a half.

As much as I dislike him, Cleary got a bunch of misfits to beat the Storm...twice. Even on Slater's big 300 day. He came up with a game plan that won it.

Today is our season. Let's see what Madge comes up with.

Tigers by 4.

After watching the first episode of the doco I’m thinking there is a game plan and the players don’t follow it.

I agree with this post. There is a blend of motivation and clever tactical coaching needed. To be fair Madge may have had a very specific plan for beating Canberra, which we didn't see. It seems that the best coaches analyse us really well and know where to pinpoint their attack when they play us. It will be great to see this happen, as spoken above, in tonight's game against Manly. If Madge is able to come up with a specific plan to reduce the impact of Tom, and attack them where they are most vulnerable, I will doff my cap to him.

After watching the first episode of the doco I’m thinking there is a game plan and the players don’t follow it.

Every team has a game plan...it is more that ours is very basic and has zero in game adjustments.

Even at Souths his plans were known as 'Madgeball' and there was one fairly simple plan. It worked as he had Burgess, Crocker, Inglis and a hell of a kicking game. The game also catered for that plan in 2014.

We have basically run the same 'plan' out for 80 mins each week. Same bench rotations. Same tactics. Regardless of the opposition.

In 2021 you really need on the fly adjustments and assistants with genuine input...players with rep backgrounds and high footy IQs picking out holes in the opposition, targeting specific opp players flaws. A different voice for the younger players to learn from at training.

Not guys like Collins...a C grade hooker from Saints in the 1990s simply "running messages".

Our team is not the smartest in the comp. I wouldn't over-complicate things for these guys.

In fact I'll be happy if our young centres can stop arm grabbing and actually line them up. Given that our back-rowers are prone to also arm-grabbing I think we'll be in for it... the only thing that will save us is continued pushing from our middle defenders to allow the edge to compress and mark up. But can't see that happening for big minutes.

Might record this one and watch it later... sorry team, no confidence this week but very much hope to be proven wrong!

Here is something for people to think about...

Souths removed their assistant coaches a few years ago as they felt they were not suited for the modern game and Madge needed help with tactics. The bloke gone? Snoopy Collins was let go. Siebold came in and, like him or loathe him, added incredible tactical nous. The perfect balance for Madge's speeches and rev ups...

Fast forward a few years...and guess who our lead assistant is? Snoopy Collins. Madge bringing back his mate, who Souths removed years ago as they needed a more progressive assistant.

If people can't see an issue, then I really don't know what to say...

We have to hold tight and bounce back when things don’t go our way. You score one, we score one and still be in the game with 10 minutes to go. Defend, defend, defend, get in their 20 and then give it everything you’ve got in attack. If we do all of that and still lose I’d look at that game and say we are building something.

They are facts mate

It will take more than Maguires game plan for this team to beat Manly - and that's a fact too.

Well, you could call it chipping away...with negative connotations.

Or you could call it applying some responsibility and asking questions as a Tiger's fan of 40 plus years...

**Here is a challenge for you Telltails...open a thread re our assistants.**

1. Explain their benefits, what they bring to the table

2. Explain how they have helped modernise our team and tactics.

I am looking forward to your post. I will read it objectively.

Yes, I want to see resiliency also.

But I also want to see some tactical nous inside the opp half...and some defensive patterns when the opp have the ball in our 20. To see the same holes every week actually addressed. Fix those issues and we will be on track.
