Was at the game, somebody tell me why Cummins didn’t blow at penalty instead of 6-again, it’s 30 out in front and 26 all.
Because that is not the rule.
I’m confused, I was sure the ref has discretion to award a penalty if it’s a greater benefit, I’ve seen ruck penalties awarded this year. Our mate Ivan even questioned the rule last night. If I’m wrong I’ll put my hand up but if that happen in a semi final or GF all hell will break loose. Just the refs treating us as they always do.
No it wasn't left to their discretion on greater benefit, they are allowed to award a penalty for repeated offenses or professional fouls. If they award a penalty under those circumstances then they must send the player to the sin bin. The ref made the right call in our game.
Ok. Got ya. Explains why the ref changed his decision in the Penrith game too. Still think it’ll be controversial if a big end of season game comes down to two points and a team is given 6-again for a clear infringement near the posts in the dying minutes.
There shouldn't be as the penalty for a ruck infringement no longer exists.
If this is true I’m lying on someone in the ruck for the final 45 secs if I’m up by 2 in a GF. Bin me, give 6 again. Good way to kill a grandstand finish.
You would be binned for a professional foul and a penalty given.
That’s my very argument, a penalty to us would have been nice last week to send the game to extra time. So it’s totally at refs discretion what constitutes a PF.
As all professional fouls are?
Exactly. So there needs to be a black and white rule or it’s just a lottery and a farce. If you’re up by two and defending your own line, you slow the ruck, it’s a professional foul, just like holding down after a long line break.
Rules shouldn't be changed based on the time or circumstance of the game, the 6 again the other day was not a professional foul or repeated infringement so the right call was made.
We’re going in circles. If the time or situation of the game doesn’t come in then you will see teams in-front infringing in the dying moments of games and ruining the spectacle. As Souths did last week. They got away with it (at refs discretion) and coaches will see that. Cleary even mentioned it two days later in his presser. It’s a clear grey area.
They got away with it because the penalty for holding down is 6 again, it really is simple. Its not sooking after the game that we would have preferred a penalty because that is not the rule.
Yet you just conceded if it happened two minutes later (45 secs to go) it’s a professional foul, sin bin and penalty. But you said the game situation doesn’t matter? Clearly it does.
No I didn't, I conceded that if you hold down for 45 secs than they would deem that a professional foul.
I may have exaggerated to make a point but what you end up getting is a window where teams can infringe in the ruck because refs won’t blow a penalty. Like in golden point. And coaches will exploit it.
Mate, we got one 6 again call in that period, you may have a point if it was more than 2, but if you get more than 2 I think you will see a sin binning and a penalty.
I agree. And in dying moments that period of having two six agains up your sleeve will be abused. Teams like Roosters and Storm back their defence on the line
I think you are reading too much into it, its no different to what would have happened before as the ref just wouldn't have blown the penalty.
Coaches are smart. First tackle, slow play the ball. “Six again won’t hurt us” Team’s 5 metres out and your defence is scrambling, “cop 6 again and reset your D” I’ve no doubt smart coaches are telling their teams that they still need to control the ruck at certain times. 2 points up and defending your line is definitely one of those occasions.
Yeah but its no different to before as the ref wouldn't have blown a penalty anyway. Anyway I don't think we are getting anywhere on this, the right decision was made last week.
Think it cost us a game last year at Campbelltown actually. Broncos penalty.
See 6 again would have been better 😛
Hahaha
