Long Tan - Danger Close

This should be an interesting movie. The story of D Company 6th RAR and Long Tan, 108 men including 4 Kiwis attached, held of 2500 North Vietnamese Army soldiers in the Long Tan rubber estate. Many of the men were Nashos who demonstrated such courage that D Company was awarded a Presidential Citation for bravery. The 105mm guns in support provide rapid fire most of the night requiring frequent changes of gunners as they became exhausted in the humidity. RIP young Lt Gordon Sharp from Tamworth who led 11 Platoon in firt contact and whom was bravely killed at the front of his men still facing the enemy.

I did read the US were making a movie on Long Tan but all characters were to be US. Long Tan was the only set piece battle in Vietnam which sort of destroys the legitimacy of many of the US Vietnam movies.

Here is a 105mm pack howitzer being used a fairly rapid pace. Imagine keeping this rate of fire up. I believe the Kiwis used these whereas the Aust gunners used the American 105mm howitzer.

Here is a tremendous story of one of the Kiwis in the battle, the forward artillery observer, Major Morrie Stanley, who directed the artillery fire that night which saved the Company from being wiped out.

this looks like a fantastic movie...can't wait to eyeball it....if you can read Harry Smith's book it is a great read....about time we got a good movie about Aussie soldiers doing well with their mates......
