Wests Tigers commit to suburban grounds

Wests Tigers have today confirmed the club’s commitment to its suburban grounds for at least the coming two seasons.

The club can confirm that it will play three games at both Campbelltown Sports Stadium and Leichhardt Oval in 2019, and at least three at both venues in 2020.

The new agreements with Campbelltown City Council and Inner West Council ensure that Wests Tigers will continue to take elite level Rugby League to suburban grounds.

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe said that the club was proud to be able to continue to play at both venues.

“We’re proud to be a club with such a strong history at Campbelltown Sports Stadium and Leichhardt Oval and it’s great that we’re able to continue playing at venues until at least the end of 2020,” said Pascoe. “Both stadiums have played an important role in our history, and that of our two foundation clubs, and we’re pleased to be able to continue that.

“Suburban grounds provide a unique atmosphere for our players, Members and supporters, with some of our fondest memories as a club coming at these two stadiums,” he said. “In recent years we’ve worked hard to add to the game day experience at both Campbelltown Sports Stadium and Leichhardt Oval to give all games a real special event feeling and we’ll be continuing that over the next two seasons.

“We have a strong working relationship with both Campbelltown City Council and Inner West Council and we look forward to building on that over the coming seasons,” he said. “We’ve also built up a strong presence in both regions through our community programs and we’re committed to continuing that long into the future. We’re much more than 80 minutes of football on the weekend and are working hard to make a positive difference in the lives of those in our community.”

The game allocation for both Campbelltown Sports Stadium and Leichhardt Oval will be confirmed when the 2019 NRL draw is released later this year.

Should have won that game. Ripped off not getting the penalty when Jeremy Smith slid knees first into (Heighington?) on the ground when it was 12-12 wth about 10 to go. Lead 12–6 at half time. That hurt, not as much as the Roosters game a couple weeks before though.

Tuquiri from memory. Blatant intentional knees.

This is an interesting, albeit biased, read on the no penalty decision…..

Really like your nine and expect him to make a big difference following an offseason with a pair of working shoulders, instead of being rushed back a month or so early.

Who knows. He only received an offer from the Bulldogs and didn't like the looks of it. Seems desperate to me. Maybe the head office would have seen that interview and offered him something. I know that I would at least

I certainly would too! We have the money to snare a player like Oats, but for some reason our club just doesn't seem to be interested, despite desperately needing some size and speed on our wings.

Maybe they think he is asking too much and will most likely end up staying with the Broncos anyway. But how much is too much for a game breaking player? Who cares if he's a winger or a second rower? They're all as valuable as each other if they're in the top 17 and putting in, imo.

On another note, how can the Bulldogs, with all their mismanagement and salary cap issues, suddenly be able to make an offer to a gun player like Oats? And they've picked up CHN from Penrith as well! How come they aren't restricted to chasing second tier players and older guys at the end of their careers like we always had to do when we were struggling financially? (And are still even doing now!) It boggles the mind.

That's really interesting thanks. I didn't know that dropped knees were illegal regardless of intention, I always thought it was an interpretation of whether or not it was an accident. Refs should know the rule.

I don't think I've ever seen replay footage except in the immediate aftermath of the match (now 8 years ago), as it's not captured in the official NRL highlights.

And I think we were all aware of the contradiction that Smith was cited after the match despite not being penalised. That always frustrates me, because I can understand a ref being unsighted in such a play, but it went to the video ref. Then the match review essentially over-ruled the video, because you have, by definition, made an error if you don't penalise an event that is later prosecuted (that is Trodden's case).

I gauge the article you linked to be theoretical rather than encouraging action, as I certainly would not support a club, not even the Tigers, taking the NRL to court over a ref's decision. Some sort of fraud or blatant and regular cheating, sure, but not high-stakes refs decisions. It would just undermine the game. Trodden himself states that play went on and "Benji Marshall made an error" - how often do we hear comments like that in Tigers games?

I'm not even annoyed that Smith later plead guilty. Trodden takes this as an acceptance of guilt by the player and St George, but Smith was free to play in the GF with a guilty plea, so that decision is not an admittance of guilt, simply a desire to bypass review and potential worse outcome.

So actually apart from the FACT that it should have been a penalty for knees of any intention, what really annoyed me most about that decision is that Bryce Gibbs copped an 8-pt try and 3-match suspension in late 2009 for dropped knees. He slid into Luke Burt with his knees, collected him after scoring, and it was reviewed for an 8-point try. The slide began more than a metre from Burt, so it's not as if Gibbs dropped knees directly onto the player, rather he struck him after dropping first to the ground then sliding along the grass.

Both the on-field and off-field refs applied the maximum penalty to Gibbs, though I believe the length of his suspension was influenced by previous incidents. I.e. Jeremy Smith might have missed the GF in 2010 had he a rap sheet like Gibbs. The match review committee conceded that Gibbs made unintentional contact but kneed Burt regardless - and now having read your article, I finally understand why: because intent is irrelevant wrt dropped knees.

The incident had real repercussions as Tigers needed to win both remaining games to make the finals (we lost 1, won 1) and Gibbs ended up missing the rest of the season and Rd 1 of 2010.

Yet a year later, Smith avoids a penalty and avoids suspension. Billy Slater has more recently been sanctioned for leading with the feet, because studs-up and knees into a tackle is dangerous. Imagine if Smith had broken Tuqiri's ribs or ruptured his kidney?

Wests Tigers

Josh Aloiai and Robbie Rochow have both undergone hand surgery with Aloiai expected to be fit in time for the start of pre-season. Rochow's injury was more serious than his Wests Tigers teammate but isn't expected to miss too much of the 2019 preparations.
