Lower grades and finals

Toyota Cup and State Cup teams seem to be handling their finals assignments quite well …..... pity none of them are up to NRL standard (according to our coaching staff at least), we will probably have to move quite a few of them on next year to make room for some expensive buys in their twilight years .........

Okay… So who would you like to see promoted to NRL and which NRL players would they replace? Keep in mind that BRET have lost more than they've won this year (I believe that's true* but someone else might know for sure) and the NYC is an underage comp with no defence?

*EDIT - Turns out that isn't true!

BRET finished the regular season on 30 points with 13 wins and 11 losses. Any other year in any other grade they would have been 5th or 6th.

Dane Chisholm, Jacob Miller, Tom Humble, Tim Simona, Ava Seumenafagai, David Nofoaluma, Mosese Fotuiaka could and should have all been used (or used more) this year. In the case of the latter three they should have all been blooded. Chisholm was never even looked at during our halves crisis. Hell they chose to play Fulton, Lawrence and Ayshford at six over him. A joke.

Thanks mate. I knew they'd come 8th so I (falsely as it turns out) assumed they had lost more than won.

Yeah they also lost 4 of their first 5 matches.

They also beat the minor premiers twice during the season. If they can get over Newy and the Dogs beat Newtown then we probably would be favourites in the GF. We played Newy once and they beat us.

Exactly, what is the use of having lower grades if you don't give them a go when the top grade is not getting the results, I could be wrong, but I thought it was a coach's job to take raw talent and develop it into a consistent performer at top level, I can't see how some of the above - if given 2 or 3 games to show their wares - would have been that much worse that was served up by the top level players this year. In saying this I am no way claiming to be an expert on player performance, having never played at NRL level, I am just expressing an opinion that I would like to see some fresh blood out there next year, the side at the moment has a tired look about it.

I think that's the job of Fletcher and Payten but your point is valid. It should be like this.

Fletcher and Payten develop their sides.

Sheens has it top list that he chooses from.

Whether through injuries or poor form, if a player cannot be selected (and form should come into it far more often than it does here) then Sheens says "hey guys, who do you have that's ready for the step up.

Eg. Ayshford is playing crap. We need a centre.

Fletcher: Simona goes alright. Has a few mistakes in his game but has plenty of heart and can stand up his man like nobody else I've ever seen. Young Hitchcox is also worth a look.

Payten: I reckon Noffa could give it a crack.

Sheens looks at tape of all three. Gives the one he likes the most a shot.

How hard is it?

Depends. Don't we have separate squads? So first grade has a squad of 25, and these are the 25 people Sheens wants to utilise in first grade. Some are fringe, and will drop back to the State Cup squad.

I am playing devils advocate, but Sheens either picks players from the first grade squad, or he looks to premote players from the lower grades who are pushing for a spot in the 25.

To use a player outside of the squad adds to your salary cap, making it harder to promote a player. Maybe our 25 squad was not balanced correctly to begin with. Injuries to have an affect on this. That might be why we seem to be having a mass clean out now.

Not saying that the above is right. Just trying to look at things from both sides of the fence. It may be cheaper to swap players around inside the top 25 squad rather than bring in from below. I can't think of any other reason why the hell he shifts them around!
