Just heard Robert Lui has pleaded guilty. Does this mean the NRL will de-register him? they will at least suspend him you would think

He seems to have trouble having a 2 year space between his indiscretions… Be interesting to see how the NRL and/or the Cows react. Glad it is not our problem anymore.

Thats the 2GB report on Twitter as well underdog

2GB News ‏ @2GBNews NRL player Robert Lui given 2 year Good Behaviour Bond and $2000 fine for assaulting his girlfriend last year.

is a good behaviour bond like a suspended sentence? surely the NRL will step in. If they don't they will have a self-confessed woman basher running around in their competition and they haven't done a thing about it. Sucked in to the Cowboys. I can't stand when clubs sack players for off-field issues, and then the volchers swoop in. If he did this while at the Cowboys they would have most likely sacked him, so why would they sign him afterwards?

That would be about right - they are looking at it as a first offence ( charges dropped on previous occassion)
You would still think the NRL would now have do something considering all the schooling these guys get on how to treat women and the media efforts made in trying to clean up the game's image for women (and mothers of prospective players).
Interesting times ahead for him and the Cowboys.
Wonder if everybody thinks Mason is so bad now?

good lawyer by the sound of things!
Very glad he's no longer here. Anyone comparing this sort of behaviour to Mason's problems has zero idea.

North Queensland rugby league star Robert Lui has admitted assaulting his girlfriend in the days after his former team, Wests Tigers, was eliminated from the 2011 NRL finals.

The 22-year-old pleaded guilty at Burwood Local Court today to assault occasioning actual bodily harm on his former partner, Taleah Rae Backo, 22, at North Strathfield in Sydney's inner west on September 19 last year.

The incident occurred on the Tigers' "mad Monday" after the team had been defeated by the New Zealand Warriors in a semi-final the previous Friday.

Advertisement: Story continues below Ms Backo told Burwood Local Court Lui kicked her in the temple and headbutted her on the night of the Tigers' mad Monday celebrations.

She said Lui entered the apartment via a balcony, pushed her in the chest, then dragged her by her hair to a mattress where he kicked her a number of times.

"He was trying to kick into the sides of me," she told the court during sentencing submissions before Magistrate Glenn Walsh.

"I was trying to cover myself, that's when he kicked me in the head.

"I was curled up trying to cover myself."

In his initial evidence, Lui denied kicking Ms Backo and said he could not remember if he headbutted her.

"I know in my heart I didn't kick her," he said.

During cross examination, Lui admitted he'd been drinking before the incident but said that had not affected his memory.

"I do remember because I wasn't really drunk," he told the court.

Lui said he admitted headbutting Ms Backo only because he was scared of being "locked up".

Lui will be sentenced at 2pm (AEDT).

Wow - that's worse than I thought!
I was never his biggest fan (only in regards to playing ability) but I have to admit it's sad to see someone throw away their chance to get something out of life by acting so stupid.

HUGE applaud for Tigers taking quick action there last year.

The fact it happened a year before that was enough to warrent dropping him without waiting

Can you imagine if they waited till now? If he was our 7? The press..with the form Tigers are having now? It would destroy the season. Would have been a nightmare.

Good on Wests Tigers.

Not sure the NRL will step in at all. Technically Lui has already been 'dealt with' in respect of the fact that he was stood down from Tigers duties after the incident and eventually had his contract terminated.

The NRL has made quite clear that it only intends to intervene in situations where other clubs have failed to reprimand players for off-field indiscretions.

Anyway, time will tell.

I don't think that is the case. The NRL deregistered the contract of Tevita Latu from Cronulla in 2006 after he punched a girl. Very similar, he should be deregistered. How can we have Women in League lunches ect and allow a player to keep playing after assaulting his partner.

True. Now I don't want to get into an argument about the 'degrees' of assaulting a women, however I will note that Latu broke the girl's nose.

Anyway, we can wait and see what happens. I won't kick and scream if he is allowed to continue playing, nor will I kick and scream if he gets de-registered.

It was a disgusting act and deserves severe punishment. What punishment is severe enough? God only knows.

There are no degrees. If a women is dragged by her hair, repeated kicked whilst defenceless on the ground and headbutted. There are no degrees. Put yourself in the shoes of her father.

If what he did is not bring the game into disrepute I don't know what is.

Broken nose is less severe than entire face of a **_pregnant_** **_woman_** swollen up due to repeat blows. Hell, you can break your nose by blowing it too hard….

Lets just see how this plays out - if the NRL/Cowboys do nothing THEN people will be mad.

I tell you that I do not wish to get into 'degrees' however you can't help yourself but to get on your moral high horse and try and lecture me.

I don't need a lecture on what is right and wrong, I am more than capable thanks.

Well it doesn't seem to matter anyway Ray Thompson has stepped it up a gear or 2 and Lui can't even get a run Said last year we should of done a swap :brick:

Tricky One for my liking!

I don't think the Cowboys have any rights to terminate in this scenario. They offered a Contract to the guy with the full understanding of the pending court case. If anything, if they choose to let him go, they would most likely be required to pay out the entire contract.

The only avenue which is left to happen is through the NRL. They have the right to terminate if they feel he has bought the game into disrepute. But as Centaur has said, they traditionally only act if the Clubs do nothing. As he was terminated by the Tigers, they may see this matter as finished?!

Time will tell…
