Wests Tigers ramp up campaign to re-sign star halfback Luke Brooks
NOVEMBER 10, 2018
NEW Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire will meet with Luke Brooks this weekend to nail down the star halfback to a deal until 2023.

Maguire will return from New Zealand’s three-Test series against England on Friday and arrange a sit-down appointment with Brooks, who is off contract after next season.

Brooks, 23, and Maguire have spoken several times on the phone but agreed that a one-on-one meeting was imperative before any contract could be signed.

Wests Tigers have lodged a preliminary offer after talks started in late September.

The two parties met again just last week.

The Daily Telegraph understands the Tigers want Brooks to sign a three- to four-year contract.

Brooks earns around $550,000 a season with the Tigers but that figure would be increased under any new deal.

A source close to Wests Tigers said: “Madge and Luke have already had contact but you still have to sit down with someone to work through things.

“Luke has been happy with the conversations so far.

“Given the position he plays in our side, it’s nice level of comfort for Luke to sit down with Madge and for Madge to sit down with Luke face-to-face.”

This year’s Dally M halfback of the year has been touted as a target for the Sydney Roosters when Cooper Cronk retires after next season.

The Roosters have not made an offer, though.

Wests Tigers want to secure Brooks as soon as possible given rival clubs can now negotiate with him.

Brooks is a Tigers local junior who has repeatedly indicated he wanted to remain at – and maybe one day captain – the club.

Last week Maguire told Sydney radio of his strong desire to retain Brooks long-term.

“I spoke to Luke and I’m really looking forward to working with him,” Maguire said.

“I really like his style of playing. He’s born and bred in that jersey.

“If we build what we want to build there, he’s going to play a big part in that.

“He has put a lot of time into that jersey and it would be nice to see him get some high reward now off the back of that.

“(Wests Tigers are) in a position to move forward and it’s about picking the right players who add to the quality that we’ve already got.”

Maguire will bring a fierce and methodical coaching style to the club.

Some senior Wests Tigers players are already curious as to how they will fit in under Maguire.

The players remain angry at Ivan Cleary’s departure to Penrith but have vowed to put it behind them under Maguire.

Pretty short odds he stays. Who knows what he and Maguire have talked about over the last couple weeks. It’s natural they would want to meet each other before Brooks makes a decision. Hopefully the meeting is just a formality.

Hopefully it's as GNR4LIFE has said and the meeting between the two is just a formality.

I don't know why , but I'm really concerned now

In past seasons he probably lacked the confidence to back himself to leave to another club

After almost winning the Dally M , he will have the confidence he can do it anywhere and behind a better pack and having options outside him who can make him look even better he will be very tempted after another failed season

He signs for 3 seasons and we don't crack the 8 , he does lots of damage to his career

Put yourself in his shoes for a moment , he has seen so many coaches , so many different 5/8's , underwhelming forward packs , outside backs who'd be slower than some sides front rowers and no finals footy ….....

I won't be surprised if he leaves to be honest

Yes a clear leader in the…Annabelle’s Lemon Face Challenge

There’s no evidence to suggest he’s going anywhere. One story about the Roosters isn’t evidence of anything.

I cant see him leaving, but to keep him we are going to be hit hard financially, and not sure his game will reflect that on the field.
Our squad has not been strengthened significantly enough- for next year at least - to give him anything extra to work with.
Brooks has got all the skills necessary but the mindset is still his biggest handbrake imo, hope Maguire can unleash it.

The Pom already put it out there he has agreed. Not always spot on but probably the best strike rate on here. I’ll stick with the Poms info.

Players have to weigh up what’s the best thing for them ,
The wrong decision at a time like this ,can either make or break his career.
I hope he stays, but won’t blame him if he wants to know where the improvement is going to be coming from, before he signs.

Unless we get some speed and some better forwards around him, he’d have to give a lot of thought to moving.

The POM said he will re-sign, not that he has re-signed. It's positive, but that doesn't mean it's over the line.

I'm pretty sure we would have front-loaded some cap last year and should be able to repay his loyalty.

Robbie, Benji & Josh will be in his ear too. Just a shame that so will the worst player-manager in the game.

I’m hanging onto the post by The Pom. He’s re-signed already!

Folks, this is how the Luke Brooks situation is playing out….it’s all about media, sponsor and fan management...the club looking to maximise its impact..
\
\
1) Brooks has signed with the WT for 3 years....the club are holding back announcing it.

2) the seed has already been planted that Madge considers Brooks a marquee player......

3) whilst Madge is on NZ duty there will be no major announcements re players.

4) Madge joins the club on the 15th as Head Coach....soon after the “held onto” announcements are made....

- Brooks signs on for 3 years, announced as our Marquee signing..
- we have filled spots 29 and possibly 30....

5) Madge gets the credit for these signings, sold as a big win for our new Coach

6) fans, sponsors, supporters are happy with our new Head Coach and his immediate impact....

Wait and see.....

The PR wheels are in motion…..its happening...

I sincerely hope that when Luke agrees to a new contract he is made Vice/Caption for 2019 with the promise that he is caption from 2020 onwards.

Chris Lawrence deserves to be caption for 2019.

No.
You dont offer the © as incentive to retention.
IF...if he is deemed suitable for a leadership role by the coach then yes by all means...some players arent suited, some prefer not to have the responsibility

I know I'm greedy but besides a new contract for Brooks, I'd like the announcement of the signing of a speedy centre and winger to add to Dylan Smith for our NRL team.
