The Mole: Luke Lewis may leave Cronulla Sharks as rivals NRL clubs circle

Luke Lewis’ sensational form could see the veteran lost to the Cronulla Sharks next season. Lewis comes off contract at year’s end and was expected to see out his long career with one last season at the Sharks in 2018.

But three clubs - the Roosters, Manly and **Wests Tigers** - are so infatuated by Lewis’ outstanding form that they are considering offering him a two-year deal.
At present, the Sharks have only tabled a one-year contract extension for the 33-year-old - and that could see him change colours next season.

Lewis is playing as well as at anytime in his long career and was superb in the big win over the Roosters last weekend, with a length-of-the-field intercept try highlighting his performance.

It was a remarkable effort from the 297-game veteran, out-sprinting a host of much younger Roosters speedsters on his way to the tryline.

Lewis wants to stay at the Sharks - but only if they come up with a two-year deal.
The premiers are considering offering Lewis what he wants, but are also mindful of the fact that they have several fine young back-rowers coming through the ranks.
Lewis began his career way back in 2001 at Penrith as a raw winger and has developed into one of the most polished back-rowers in the game.

Wouldn't mind Lewis but heard Roosters are front runners to get him if he leaves the Sharks

Luke would be great for our young players and brings heaps of experience to the club if he comes…
At least you know what you get with Lewis...despite his age...,

Great player but its a last grab at some $$$$

We need to look forward and no more Paying Overs

Still in top form at his age Spartan, he would walk into our side on one leg. We are still one quality second rower short and Lewis fits the bill.

I wouldn't be against giving him a one year deal with an option for another year.

Chooks and Manly are our competitors….we are no chance, even if we offer massive overs, they both have other means to top up salaries

We already have McQueen and Lawrence as experienced back-rowers.

I am not against this signing, it would be great, but I think money can be better spent elsewhere for dynamic game-breakers.

I give him little chance of leaving the shire, but we should be all over him all the same. If nothing else it'll push his price up on the sharks books.

I can't see the Roosters offering him big money as they have their $$ invested in their high profile player already, and are fairly stacked in that department.

I would take Lewis in a heartbeat and I think originally coming from Penrith, the Tigers are the type of team I could see him coming to at this stage of his career. He would relish helping mentor the juniors we have coming through, and playing alongside Packer, Matulino, McQueen and Taylor would be pretty attractive!

Lawrence is not an experienced backrower at all.

We would be his last choice of the 3 clubs mentioned. We missed out on Lewis before plus I can't see the Sharks letting him go nor him wanting to leave, may have to offer him as mentioned above a 1 year extension with a 1 year option to keep him. Would be a good signing but can't see it happening!!

Ok, experienced player.

We would only sign Lewis to play 80 minutes in our back-row.

McQueen is an 80-minute player.
If ET moves to back-row, he is an 80-minute player.
McQueen and ET would play the whole game needing no sub.

If ET stays in the middle, we have Aloiai, Lawrence, Eisenhuth who can each play long minutes.

It would take big $$$ to take him away from the Shire and to beat Chooks and Manly. What I am saying is that we already have a back-row that can play long minutes and we would be paying big bucks for him to be on our bench or reserve grade.

I often wonder what might have happened if Lewis had joined us last contract when he chose Sharks in a last-minute decision.

Lewis's future to be sorted shortly

Lewis's future to be sorted shortly
Veteran back-rower Luke Lewis has told NRL.com he wants to play on in 2018 and hopes to have his future sorted in the next two weeks.

The 33-year-old has been in sensational form for the Sharks this season with two long-range tries in the past fortnight showing he still has what it takes to match it with the game's modern-day stars.

**Currently in his 17th NRL season, the two-time premiership winner has shown no signs of slowing down and revealed several clubs had made offers for his services for next season.**

"I definitely want to play on next year," he told NRL.com following Cronulla's 44-12 win over the Roosters on Saturday.

"My body feels really good at the moment, I'm enjoying my footy, I love being around the guys and I love the team banter so I don't want to lose that. My body feels amazing at the moment so I've got to listen to the body and it's telling me to play on.

"There's been no progression, but to be honest there have been a few teams that have sent me contracts.

"I haven't made a decision yet because I want to purely concentrate on the Sharks for the time being. We've got the bye next week so hopefully I can sit back and have a good chat with my wife and make a few decisions. Fingers crossed something can come of it in the next fortnight or so."

If his recent performances are anything to go by, a move back to centre could be on the cards after the veteran wound back the clock with a pair of long-range intercept tries in as many weeks; an incredible effort for a man who is a couple of games shy of 300 NRL appearances.

Lewis defied Father Time in Round 16 when he plucked a Daly Cherry-Evans pass and raced 80 metres against the Sea Eagles and then backed it up with a 90-metre dash against the Roosters on Saturday with an almost identical play.

"I think the last time I took an intercept was back in SG Ball so it's been a long time," he joked.

"It was the last tackle and I thought Mitchell Pearce was going to get the ball so I thought I'd try to get up and put a bit of pressure on him to hopefully force him not to put in too good a kick for Daniel Tupou.

"When I got there, I was a metre or two away and thought 'hang on, the ball is still in the air. I might be able to get it'. I got lucky and caught it and I was really lucky there was a big screen in front of me so I didn't have to turn my head and look back at who was chasing me.

"I felt alright after the first 50 [metres] but then I got to the 50 and I was starting to run on the treadmill. I saw Latrell Mitchell getting closer and closer but luckily the legs just got me there."
