Madge’s Ability to Attract Stars

I don't see any problems with madge getting people in the door. I think it's the admin in being able to close out the deal. Something is happening where players start out excited, then lose interest. That's not madge.

I've noticed where we've lost, it's always been other clubs swooping in late. Maybe we're going too hard, too early. **Looking too eager.***

Nothing wrong with looking too eager. We’re not trying to attract a woman.

I'm not underestimating our facilities being a massive factor for potential recruits. As it stands they stink. Working out of friggin demountables and the gym is in a damn carpark.

End of next year is when the new facilities are scheduled to open. Let's see if that is a factor for 2022 signings. Hope so but not holding my breath

Madge isn’t a versatile coach, he can’t change his style. Accordingly to be successful he needs his own squad that can conform to his style. Unfortunately, doesn’t seem like many players want to play for him.

One thing I will say about Madge is he isn't able to adapt to get the best out of his squad, he needs the squad to adapt to get the best out of him.

He flogs the team as he has to. We have a lack of talent. Madge is a winner he leaves no stone unturned. If everyone at the club was as pig headed about winning we wouldn’t have the issues we have now.

Exactly. The best excuse the players have got for under performing is for fans to buy into the whole tough task master talk. If that's the sort of players you think are going to get us playing finals footy you are all kidding yourselves.

I disagree. Desperation is not a sign of a strong club.

Excellent post.

Madge needs vets and hard men. Tamou will help, but he is very short term and probably has a good year left at best.

Reality is if you come here...you will be flogged. Not many players will sign up for that.

Tactically, Madge has not shown much also. His game plans are very basic and there are hardly every adjustments. So, the smarter players who want to learn new ways etc are unlikely to come.

It is a tough position for us to be in as none of our assistant coaches bring any 'cred' with them (not like if they were ex Origin or rep class).

We need a few lucky breaks. One big name to jump on boars and sell the joint to others. Hard to see who that player will be though...

think bellamy doesn't flog his players?? from all accounts the players are petrified of getting on his wrong side, but they race to join melbourne. It's not the coach it's the club and it goes from top to bottom.
There are changes happening in our club, but unfortunately we don't have the cattle performing on the field getting the job done. Madge is too hard and flogs us at training? Don't like it then leave (Matterson) and the rest bought in....Madge just needs to be a bit softer? Ok then let's try that, next game lose to Newcastle by a truckload. So who's fault is it then? Who hasn't adapted to who?

I wouldnt be to hard on Madge just yet...he took on a horrible job at the start especially with contracted players he wasnt even involved with plus the Farah cap fine etc...
Madge is a tough task master and he has to be,Harry Grant even said he isnt as tough as Bellamy,so he must have a very good idea what it takes to be consistent and competative at NRL level...
To be quite honest the club itself must be held responsible for the poor outlook this Club has, with years of in house fighting, players leaving such as Ted,MM,AW,and changing coaches like underwear didnt help one bit as we grew, then the CEO and Chairperson(M.Go)shown the door, then there is this profound look of poor management and culture percieved...
Madge has been voicing the fact that the culture must change at the club which will take longer than expected, these things dont happen overnight..our cap issues I reckon what has restricted us in securing high graded talent because we just cant offer enough to get them here(blame Cleary for lack of funds at the start)...
Im quite certain with some sound performances and the club showing it is trading profitably, even increasing membership and sponsors the club will be in a much better position come 2022..it just takes time as most good businesses do,lets stay strong and give the coach a chance at showing what he can do on a level platform before we shove him over the gap because he isnt pleasing some peoples wanting to win every game every week and playing finals...lets be honest we have gone through this type of thing for years,we now have a guy who is adament about changing things in a positive way and people want to get rid of him while his hands have been tied...

Jesus....this is gonna be a bloody long off season on this forum. If its not Pascoe, its Macguire. Bloody hell.......

Players will get flogged anywhere. Most players that come here realise it’s more talk and rumour than anything about how hard Madge is. Obviously he’s tough but so is Bellamy and Robinson and Bennett.

Those guys are regarded as excellent man managers. He isn’t.

Those guys are better individually with the players yeah. Some players who are thrive on his style of management will thrive, the ones who need to be cuddled won’t. It means you’ll miss out on some players

Get what you're saying @GNR4LIFE but it isn't Madge's responsibility.
His role is to define and build the culture of the team, and have them performing to their best.

Feels like we're in a stalemate(not sure of what word to use) in our ability to attract topline or decent players and the team's ability to improve. Is it time the club reach out Harry T for further assistance with this conundrum?
The junior pathways looks promising but it's years before we see results and possible success. So do we need to bring in the big guns?

Edit: Catch22 might be a better word.

Robinson has a squad of internationals and origin players, Bennett invented the game back in the 19 oughts and Bellamy has an amazing club behind him which obviously helps.

None of them have their backs up against it like Madge does to be fair. Our club management sucks and has done for years, our players are renowned plodders and we have had home grounds stretching from Homebush to NZ....

I love the tigers....but they never love me back.

Is it Madge’s ability to attract stars? Or the clubs ability to attract stars. We’ve never signed a current origin player or Australian player ever in our history.

I agree that a Bennett or Bellamy would have the power to attract talent but that’s it, no other coach will be able to sign stars to our club

We just need to start making finals, show the players coming here isn’t a one way ticket to ending your career but it’s a way to make a great career. Soon as we have stability in our club and we can start being competitive, the players will come. Until then we will have to make do with Doueihi and Luciano type signings

Brett Hodgson played Origin both before and after joining our club and Scott Prince made origin the year he joined us but they are the only ones close.

Ryan O'Hara?
Serious
Sad i know
