Madge Maguire - Mega Thread

People going on about Madge's defensive structures being poor have no clue. Do you honestly think Madge says to the team go out there and be passive, he is being hurt by pea hearted amateurs and young guys still learning their trade, which can be excused. If there is a disconnect with the coach and players then the players need to be moved to reserve grade. Even Bellamy and Uncle Wayne would finish in the bottom four with our roster but instead of weeding out the real problem they will hire a new coach and repeat the same mistakes for the last decade, instead of making a statement to the players.

Which would be fine and every single supporter should realise it takes time, but after 3 years, there’s been no improvement, we’ve gone backwards…

But it's a totally different squad to 3 years ago, a squad that is now the youngest in the NRL.

Brooks fired under Ivan cleary
Maguire can't coach and has lost the dressing room
we need Hastings and Brooks for 2022 get a better coach

Daily Telegraph reporting that Moses Mbye was hung out to dry by the Tigers and was left behind as excess baggage by Cleary and that Michael Chee Kam has been really poorly treated by the Tigers and Harry Grant had nothing but praise for the Tigers and Madge.Wish we still had you Harry

only way you would keep madge would be if you can get Harry Grant from Melbourne

Brooks didn't fire under Cleary, can't remember him steering us to the semi finals. How he won Dally M halfback of the year is one of the greatest mysteries of all time. Hastings and Doeuhi in 2022, Brooks should be cleaning the sheds.

It's a recurrent theme. Hard working players who want to be the best they can, have nothing but praise for Madge, while lazy pea-hearted players complain they are hard done by. And people think the coach is the issue.

Let’s hope he gets fired under Maguire.

The funny thing I have been reading how the WTs keep sacking coaches as remedy for underperforming players and keep players such as Brooks and Noffa because their juniors and it stands out clearly that the club makes the same mistakes over and over and never learn...
so what really makes me laugh this time is sack Madge and recruit a coach capable of getting this team playing finals...and re-employing a sacked coach who had court action against the club to become involved in the club again...
And you guys reckon sacking Madge and not looking at the people who are in charge of employing various personell get a free pass.....

The current playing group is as much a handbrake in recruiting decent players as any coach.
The shifting of coaches without apportioning accountability on the weaknesses of playing group will never attract winners or bring out the best in any player.

Exactly where I stand in all of this.

Players aren't signing with us because they don't want to play at a club with an extremely poor senior playing roster. Poor leadership and known tankers or chokers.

Totally agree, it is the players and the culture why players aren't signing. Madge is just used as an excuse for the basketcase that has been operating for the last ten years. But people will keep saying it is Madge, yeah right.

+1000000.

Anyone with talent and a drive to win won't want to come anywhere near this club, they'll happily continue on playing for less money for a chance at winning a premiership.

I would say the fact that Bellamy has been at the same club for going on 20 years and has never been sacked would be a pretty strong indication that he builds strong relationships, never heard rumours of players saying a bad thing about him, in fact most of them love him and relentlessly take the mickey out of him, doesn’t seem like they are walking on egg shells to me.

Would Bellamy be in that position if Melbourne Storm weren't initially successful, or if he'd come into the club after 7 years of continued failure?

I won't argue that Bellamy isn't one of the all-time coaches, because he is. And comparisons to Bellamy for Madge or any other coach aren't quite fair, because Bellamy is the GOAT.

But similarly, we of course are not going to hear complaints from Storm players because they have a terrific system down there, which keeps on keeping on. That is a reflection of the coach of course, but he's been entrenched there with his successful approach and elite-level players for nearly 20 years.

Furthermore Storm don't have the social or media distractions that Sydney or Brisbane sides have, so they are advantaged as a playing group of being able to be low-key in their community and mostly out of the media spotlight - for both good and bad, because as successful club as they are, Melbourne is still mostly indifferent to the Storm legacy.

Bellamy was also part of the regime that systematically cheated the salary cap to maintain their elite roster after that first successful Bellamy era, which although it was a long time ago, meant he conspired to illegally maintain his advantage over other clubs in the earlier years of his tenure.

Put it another way - if Bellamy was to join Tigers, would he be an instant success and would all the players love him? After 3 years of gradually slipping performances?

So you agree that Lee and Pasco have no fault as to where this club is at...you dont want Madge, but dont let that cloud your judgement that the higher ups also bare responsabilty for poor seasons...

I often wonder if we would have destroyed Bellamy's career if he joined the Tigers in 2003 instead of Melbourne.

Bellamy would have 3 years of improvement due to systems and processes that he would put in place.
Bellamy's players wouldn't be a confused rabble after 3 years.

Don't put words in my mouth, i've never defended Pascoe or Lee and would be quite happy for them both to be given the arse. But you can't do everything at once. Getting rid of Madge (and his assistants) immediately is the most important thing for the club at the moment so we can prepare for the preseason. I'm hoping it's announced in the next day or two so we can move on from his dumpster fire of a tenure.

Would Bellamy have done that much better being handicapped by the salary cap and overpaid useless players who don't want to put in? He most likely would have dropped those players at least but dropping Brooks, Mbye and Nofo only means you are replacing them with Madden, Cini, Hoffman etc who despite limited chances have shown that they aren't going to set the world on fire in first grade unfortunately. Madge has been hamstrung in a huge way during his tenure.

I look at physical evidence and for last 3 years WT defence and attack has regressed. No line speed, no structure in attack and what 5th tackle option. Hail Mary and wish for the best. I don't like sacking coaches but Maguire on the evidence available plus lack of ability to attract top talent to WT means he has to go asap. Seems not up with the current games trends.
