Madge Maguire - Mega Thread

I think we are spiraling. The players don’t look like they are buying into what the coach is saying, but more concerning is that they look like a fractured group.

The scary thing is that is is the experienced leaders that appear most disconnected. If Madge is not the problem then I think it is them realising what a rabble they have walked into.

Perhaps a lack of professionalism and accountability. Maybe the attitude and sense of entitlement average players have. Maybe they see contentment and an acceptance of mediocrity in the group.

Considering the turnover in the playing group surely the stalwarts could not have infected everyone else.

The fact that the experienced players are disconnected may also indicate their ability to recognise a dud coach

You could see before the game when he was already lecturing them that they’d clocked off.

Maybe he was lecturing them *because* they had already clocked off.

The amazing observation was the he seemed oblivious to his players' reaction to his rant. Tamou appeared to be irritated by him.

If you are getting paid 5 times the average wage to run 20 metres - and with the additional honour of captaining the club - you don't have the right to be 'irritated' by a premiership winning coach telling you to fire up.

Isn't that the issue, ranting rather than speaking with the players? There are far more effective means of delivery. I know others may not like this but look how Cleary delivers his pre-game and half time chats. He is sat down, almost laid back.

There is a picture of Brooks after the debacle on the Sunshine Coast in the dressing shed with Maguire in a rant. Brooks has his arms folded against his chest?

Can’t disagree with that, Madge needs to find his secondary style. Pregame, he did look like he was talking at the players. It often looks like a Tommy face slapping delivered verbally which may not have the same effect?

So we should be announcing in a press conference that players like Mbye actually had a great game, in the hopes that Brandon Smith might then decide he wants to come here?

Good players do not want to play with our squad.

To be fair why would any good player want to come and be lectured by a lunatic every week. You could see Everyone’s eyes glazing over.

Do you think Bellamy is not an angry ranting lunatic?

Nope. If you look at the shots in the dressing room he’s seated and talking normally 99% of the time. He blows up a couple of times a year when he needs to.

Bellamy has never had to deal with a squad like this. There is absolutely no evidence to support how he would or wouldn't react.

What is Madge doing exactly? Telling them to go out there and puss out in tackles? Encouraging them to drop the ball and give away stupid penalties?

No but his one out hit ups and useless backline plays that he has the guys doing are a joke. Its 1980s stuff. The opposition defenses only have to send 3 blokes up at a time. Then in turn Brooksy is kicking deep within our half putting pressure on the whole team. Its been happening for 2 years now and nothing is changing. All the good teams have all players moving together giving their halves options and confusing defensive lines. I hate to say it but at times yesterday i was laughing, it was so bad.

Good points and I dont disagree, however we have seen some moments of decent attack.

I think at the moment we are falling short so badly in the fundamentals that we are exhausted and have no chance of actually putting any sort of game plan together. Continually dropping balls, stupid penalties for raking the ball and then p weak simple missed tackles, we are smashed.

Madge can plainly see what he’s doing isn’t working. Why can’t he adapt?

That’s what that shoddy defensive structure was , an adaptation , that didn’t work .

For me , the issues in the team lie with 3 players . Mbye, Tamou , and Luciano. Luciano needs to be taken off the edge for his own sake . There’s no reason why we can’t play him at 13 , and have him run wider at times .

With this move , Mbye can find some confidence , or not . His voice appears lost i. The wilderness , and his defence is all at sea .
Tamou , just had fallen off a cliff . Seems like a great bloke , but the hit and drop to your knees style , just isn’t working in this current touch football game .
The guys having the most affect are guys who are running through the line and looking for offloads.
The rule changes have killed Tamou like players . Even Twal . Because he can’t pass , it basically means the defence can jam and compress when he runs it , basically killing any momentum.

Twal you can fix , as he’s still early 20s , Tamou , I dunno , it might be too late .

Also is there any reason we can’t swap brooks to the right defensively ? I don’t understand why we have our best backline defender , defending on the safer edge .

If the edge is all at sea , we should stack it as best we can , sure it means a swap on attack and vise versa , but it’s worth a shot isn’t it ? He covers up so many other players bad defensive reads .

In saying that though , the issues start in the middle . The Reynolds try where Luciano was not coming across and Mbye turned out , is basically what guys like @geo have been saying .
We arnt winning the middle so the edges are compressing , causing huge overlaps on the edges .

**‘I need to find men’: Michael Maguire flags roster overhaul as Tigers lashed over ‘garbage’ loss**

A frustrated Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire has lashed his team’s “garbage” performance as they sunk to a new low at their spiritual home.

The Tigers treated defence like it was optional as the Rabbitohs piled on seven tries in a 38-22 training run.

It came off the back of Maguire’s men conceding an embarrassing 66 points in their previous outing against the Storm.

It was a good thing there were no fans at the ground because the players would have been booed off at Leichhardt Oval for the second time this season.

A month to the day after they stunned the Panthers, Michael Maguire’s side folded as the Origin-in-waiting halves of Cody Walker and Adam Reynolds picked them apart with consummate ease.

Speaking after the match Maguire said they needed to fix their diabolic starts to games.

“For three weeks, our starts have been ordinary. We have to be accountable for that,” he said.

“It’s sad to say that our start looked like a training run for Souths. It’s very disappointing to see us start like that.

“I need to find men who are going to be accountable for what we’re doing. That’s not acceptable for where we’re going with the club.

“Our first half was garbage.”

Maguire, who said there was no repeat of the silent treatment he gave his side at halftime during the Storm hammering, said he would use the rest of the season to work out which players had a future at the Tigers.

“I’ll be definitely having a look at the team,” Maguire said.

“They’ve got a week now where they can go away from footy for a while.

“I want to find the ones that are ready to take Wests Tigers forward.”

“We’re very focused on where we want to get to. Seeing a performance like that is disappointing because the effort around the organisation is a strong club.

Maguire has challenged his players' manhood publicly (or even privately)and that is the end for him. Football aside, that is unacceptable and he should be asked to attend the CEO's office this morning. No wonder we're viewed in less than positive light.

??

The players need to man up.
I think it's fair what Madge said.

Said he wants players that are hungry and want to lead the tigers to success.

Heads should roll after last night's game.

I'd be taking aim at Nofo, Mbye, anyone else.
All needing to be dropped.

He's trying to build a team and makes this comment in the press?

Absolutely unacceptable and counterproductive to what the WTs' Club is attempting to achieve.

He’s shifting the blame. He was very happy with the roster he put together but now apparently he’s been hamstrung by salary cap.

Perhaps our CEO should inform Maguire of this document.

National Rugby League Member Protection Policy – July 2015

Are you trying to insinuate that criticism of Madge is harassment?

Paws is the leader of criticism of Maguire.

Alienating the playing group is not going to win their respect or confidence. The blame shifting is also predictable.

Everything about this situation is predictable - this what this club is about. Why change now?

We have to do things better. I hope our CEO is on top of this and ends this situation. Can Sheens be released from quarantine early? Tim we need you now!

Sheens was the one who is on the record saying "players sack coaches" - the irony of that comment can't go unnoticed if Maguire is sacked and we still have not made a finals series since sacked coach Sheen makes his white knight return.

It seems ironic that a team full of mediocre players could get a mediocre board to sack a coach with a mediocre record at the club, while his record at his previous two clubs was not mediocre.

I feel quite mediocre after reading this. Thank you.

I guess the same reason Adam O Brien couldn't get the best out of his team till his two best players returned from injury and bam - different team.
The same as Des Hasler - four losses in a row - Turbo returns different team
Katoni Staggs return to Broncos yesterday instant improvement.
Trent Robinson gets a few injuries and a weakened side - rookie half - slaughtered by Melbourne.
We have no leaders / quality in our team who can lift the squad but we have a heap that drop their bundle - at a club with a history to sack/ move on coaches and hope that resolves it.
Their first half attitude was inexcusable- whether they are a fan of the coach or not they are paid by the club -well - to do a job.
Maguire may not survive but their are massive deficiencies in that team no matter who coached them.

Not only that..the retreating defensive pattern and domination of the middle third means teams roll through 3 hit ups then throw the ball wide the edges are back peddling and in dissarray there are gaps wider than the grand canyon that teams stroll through....

I'm sure no doubt Wests Tigers offence put 60 on Wests Tigers defence at training..with the massive hole in da fence...brick wall fences are all the rage whilst we use pickets..

I know Tamou might bring something off the field but on field he's adding nothing. 27 minutes on the field yesterday, 3 runs for 15 metres. Game before vs Melbourne, 34 minutes, 3 runs for 26 metres.

Twal got manhandled yesterday.

Twal you can fix , as he’s still early 20s , Tamou , I dunno , it might be too late .

I know Tamou might bring something off the field but on field he's adding nothing. 27 minutes on the field yesterday, 3 runs for 15 metres. Game before vs Melbourne, 34 minutes, 3 runs for 26 metres.

Twal got manhandled yesterday.

Ppl harp on about how cheap he is but in the end it's a waste. Better to give the extra coin to attract someone here than have 2 plodders on the same.

Maguire has challenged his players’ manhood publicly (or even privately)and that is the end for him. Football aside, that is unacceptable

They have few testicles between them, it is a statement of fact.

It is counterproductive to team building, cohesion and performance. And importantly, how do you believe other players outside the club will view WTs as a destination? Are we that naive to think word does not get around?

He was a poor signing imo. And he'll be even worse next season.

I'm not excusing yesterday ...but we had the ball for 8 tackles in the 1st 21 minutes v Melbourne

The forwards would have been absolutely stuffed from defending v Melbourne

Obviously this is a thread about our coach and mostly in part to his failings and the way he deals with the players in the sheds ....firstly if you arent in the sheds or in ear shot of what he is saying, how can you comment about what he is saying without having the facts...secondly,he is the coach and he has to get his point across in whatever manner he can, normal conversation with some players with lower than normal IQ may need a raised voice...thirdly many other coaches have reacted in different angry ways over the years to show their frustration,eg Des H tearing a door off the shed, others kicking and throwing chairs etc,why should Madge have to be calmer because he has to contain his frustration just to suit some fans,,,

That’s because he whould not have recruited or re-signed the the players Maguire has
