Madge's coaching career is over after his stint here.

He is not going to lead us to the finals next year, will not be here the year after. No one is interested in a coach with a recent winning percentage of around 30%

Wasn't Sheens on something like 30% when we turfed him?

Nope, 10th in his last season, top 4 the two years before that.

He did a Cleary on them and left behind a completely buggered salary cap. You'd struggle to find a Knights fan who has much respect for him.

I’m talking about Sheens

Completely misread your post and assumed it was something else, sorry! I'm a pelican.

The press conference was pretty underwhelming.. the Journo asked how can you be confident that we will improve next year and his response was Hasting, Oliver and the 10 blokes on the sideline. No Madge.. our best player this year is gone for 6 months, Laurie has only had one year of development. And the fact that he mentioned the young blokes is a worry in itself.. the fact that you are relying on 21 year olds to win you games is a big worry already.

I think Madge may actually make for a really good Juniors coach. I wonder if there is something in the contract that allows us to make him an U20s coach or something.

I wouldn’t like my son and his junior team mates being sworn at and have chairs kicked at them.

Might want to steer them clear of the Storm too then.

He hates the board.
Edit: to flesh out.
He thinks the board encourages mediocrity and actively tells players that we don’t make finals so don’t stress about being too low on the ladder etc.. **The board must go.**

Cameron Ciraldo should be our priority, highly regarded and players love him he can maybe bring some quality players with him to the club and be our coach for the next decade he’s pretty young

He’ll have a bunch of cash more than around 2 mil to work with, with a good young core and new faculties coming in it may be appealing with sheens also being around

If not I wouldn’t mind Bennet for 2 years, a combo of Sheens and Bennet will bring success and make us attractable to players with sheens covering youth with Hartigan and Bennet focussing on getting the team prepared

Wouldn’t be totally against Shane Flanagan but I’d prefer the other two

Thank God we have some football smarts to decide this time not pick and hope for the best pascoe and board

If Madge is let go no young/inexperienced coach should come here. It would be the end of them.
Looking at the available options, I would be enquiring with Bennett about coaching us for two years and identifying an understudy that he can develop to take over from him after that.

Bennett is a flat track bully. Look at Newcastle. He had nothing. Yes guys love him in winning clubs but put him in a shed of losers and see how the love fades

If you call getting them to a pre- lim “nothing”, we’ll ok.

Yeah but look at the players he bought into the place to do it and left the club in a total mess. If that’s success I’ll pass.

we have been terrible for 10 years

Yep you’re absolutely right. And we’ve been terrible with much better sides than this one. So do we go the Cleary route again and try to buy our way out of this hole? That’s what the Dogs have tried doing and they’re apparently in trouble before a ball is kicked.

Nope - we have to stay the journey with the youth policy. It isn't going to bring instant success but cannot afford to stuff up the salary cap again. It may be more pain for the next couple of years but should be worth in the medium to long term.

Im not making excuses as I am filthy with this lose today and the season in general.
There is a few things that are not helping us considering we are the youngest team in the NRL this year.
1. Today we had like 10 players out and the kids filling in are from reserve grade that have not played a footy game in ages - Always going to be short of a run
2. Injuries didn't help and having some players play massive mins
3. Our salary cap has been screwed for years now and next year is the 1st year in Madge's time we have the space to sign quality players if we can attract them.
4. Madge has come in here to fix the club from the ground up instead of patching it up and thinking of his own career. That alone speaks volume because not many with his experience would do this and put the club 1st.
5. Look what he was given to work with over the last 3 years - Facilities are terrible, We have like 5 home grounds, board members are still split, Playing roster is well below average and the club itself just keeps getting bagged.

I know people want results and I am included in this but deep down we have made some real strides in growing this club with solid foundations.
**COE** - That is just a game changer
**Youth pathways** - We are investing heavily in this area and even hired Sheen and Kimmorley plus others to progress.
**Young talent** - We have brought some the the games best young talent when our salary cap was shithouse and given them valuable game time to assist with there development.

Area we have done wrong -
**Home grounds** - My understanding is our current agreement ends end of 2022 so hoping we can nail down a home ground or 2 we can call a home base -
****Experience**** - Having the wrong experienced players to lead these young guys around - Packer, Mbye, Tamou, etc.. We need winners not players here for retirement funds
**External Recruitment for Experienced players** - Not sure if this is a Madge problem or a recruitment team problem as Madge seems to talk to players and get them on board for it all to fall over when nailing down a contract. Are we been to tight with our money due to past bad decisions ? Are players using us? do we not have a sales person there to wrap up a deal? Who knows but its not a good look for us at all.
**Madge (Elephant in the room)** - Is he as bad as media point out ? He does come across full on but he seem 100% committed to lifting the club and for me there is some weak minded players holding the place down and want to take the easy way out. I am sure Madge knows who they are but due to out lack of depth has to keep playing them or we get the results we had today with too many juniors.
**Letting the wrong ones go** - Many factors come into this and we are not behind the seems to see how they come to some of these decisions. Matterson - Wanted more money after 1 good year and we were not in a position to agree so cried and got released , Aloiai - He wanted a big increase in salary and for me we made the correct decision as Manly paid overs for him and we didn't want to match. C Thomson - Very good player that gives his all every game and exactly what we want but understand why the club released him to be closer to family and get a 3 year deal. But in general the rest of the guys gone have been the correct decisions IMO.

I personally want to keep Madge another year BUT if he is the reason we can not attract the top line players I would not have a problem if we changed coaches as we need some quality experience here before the young ones move on because nothing is changing.

At the end of the day it all comes down to winning games and unless we sign some quality players it will be hard to get better next year.

Just my thoughts after a average season but everyone has there won opinion and rightly so.

Embarrassing loss could be final nail in coffin for Maguire and Tigers
By Michael Chammas
September 5, 2021 — 7.04pm

A humiliating 38-0 loss to the Bulldogs on Sunday is shaping as the final nail in the coffin of Michael Maguire’s failed tenure at the Wests Tigers.

The club will continue through the process of undertaking an internal review over the next week, with the board to make the final determination on Maguire’s future soon after.

The club received a number of expressions of interest for the coach’s job on Sunday but maintains it won’t be looking at alternatives until a decision is made on whether Maguire, who still has two years to run on his deal, should lead the club next year.

The knives were out for Maguire before Sunday’s shellacking at the hands of the hapless Bulldogs, however that is expected to intensify as the club looks for answers following one of the most embarrassing losses in the joint venture’s history.

In a two-part investigation into the Wests Tigers over the weekend, chairman Lee Hagipantelis left fans under no illusion as to the club’s displeasure when providing an update on the review that will determine the coach’s future.

“The results do not reflect the financial commitment and investment that this club has made to the football department, nor the potential of what we believe to be a very exciting young roster,” Hagipantelis told the Herald before Sunday’s game. “Difficult questions need to be asked, but more importantly they must be answered.”

“We all have a responsibility to this club, but more importantly to our fans and members to provide them an NRL team to be proud of. Have we done that this year? No we haven’t. One thing I have never done is question the absolute commitment and dedication of those within the organisation. However, that has not resulted in the level of success we anticipated or expected.”

The Tigers’ next scheduled board meeting isn’t until the end of the month, however a decision will be made before then, one way or another.

The Herald reported on Sunday that the trust between Maguire and some of his players has eroded due to belief internally that Maguire isn’t transparent and conveys mixed messages.

It was also reported that halfback Luke Brooks has not enjoyed his time under the coach and was recently shopped to the Bulldogs by his management.

The Tigers played like a team without regard for the future of the coach, coming into the game knowing full well the implications of their performance on Maguire’s tenure.

While they were missing a number of top-line players - including Adam Doueihi, James Tamou, Daine Laurie and Moses Mbye - they were made to look like a reserve grade team against a side that has struggled to score points for the past few seasons.

According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Maguire remained calm in the sheds after full-time and thanked the players who were moving on at the end of the year.

When asked in the post-match press conference if he was the right man for the job, Maguire said: “Ah, yep. Yep.”

“I know exactly where the team is going. The organisation knows where the team is going. We have to make sure we continue to be disciplined about what we’re trying to build here. Changing teams and changing pathways of clubs takes a little bit of time. It doesn’t mean you can’t get better performances than that on the park, I acknowledge that. But it’s about continually just sticking to the path of where we’re going with this group.

“People continually refer to 10 years (missing the finals), but it’s about the future and where we’re going. You saw a lot of youth out there. We had 12 blokes on the sideline, we will be a different team next year. We have the makings of what it takes to move forward in the competition and grow the team.”

Maguire has blamed the decisions of Ivan Cleary for his team’s failures during his three-year tenure. He now has an inferior success rate to Jason Taylor when he was sacked after three rounds in 2018.

Former Sharks premiership-winning coach Shane Flanagan is looking for a job but there doesn’t appear to be much appetite from the Tigers to consider him. Other options include Penrith assistant coach Cameron Ciraldo, former Cowboys coach Paul Green, ex-Sharks coach John Morris, St Helens coach Kristian Woolf and Catalans coach Steve McNamara.

Wayne Bennett is off contract but insists he is returning to live in Queensland next year.

That's it

Started this thread back in April after the cowboys loss (original title was 'Sack madge')

Hasn't really done anything since to change my mind

You can see he cares, which is great, but he still has questionable tactics, team selections and a defensive structure that never troubles any side...

It's time

It’s time for the annual WT’s post season melodrama. 3 years in a row we have had someone walk out. 2018 it was Cleary, 2019 Matterson and 2021 Aloiai. We’re gunning for 4 years in a row. Whose it gonna be???
