Embarrassing loss could be final nail in coffin for Maguire and Tigers
By Michael Chammas

A humiliating 38-0 loss to the Bulldogs on Sunday is shaping as the final nail in the coffin of Michael Maguire’s failed tenure at the Wests Tigers.

The club will continue through the process of undertaking an internal review over the next week, with the board to make the final determination on Maguire’s future soon after.

The club received a number of expressions of interest for the coach’s job on Sunday but maintains it won’t be looking at alternatives until a decision is made on whether Maguire, who still has two years to run on his deal, should lead the club next year.

The knives were out for Maguire before Sunday’s shellacking at the hands of the hapless Bulldogs, however that is expected to intensify as the club looks for answers following one of the most embarrassing losses in the joint venture’s history.

In a two-part investigation into the Wests Tigers over the weekend, chairman Lee Hagipantelis left fans under no illusion as to the club’s displeasure when providing an update on the review that will determine the coach’s future.

“The results do not reflect the financial commitment and investment that this club has made to the football department, nor the potential of what we believe to be a very exciting young roster,” Hagipantelis told the Herald before Sunday’s game. “Difficult questions need to be asked, but more importantly they must be answered.”

“We all have a responsibility to this club, but more importantly to our fans and members to provide them an NRL team to be proud of. Have we done that this year? No we haven’t. One thing I have never done is question the absolute commitment and dedication of those within the organisation. However, that has not resulted in the level of success we anticipated or expected.”

The Tigers’ next scheduled board meeting isn’t until the end of the month, however a decision will be made before then, one way or another.

The Herald reported on Sunday that the trust between Maguire and some of his players has eroded due to belief internally that Maguire isn’t transparent and conveys mixed messages.

It was also reported that halfback Luke Brooks has not enjoyed his time under the coach and was recently shopped to the Bulldogs by his management.

The Tigers played like a team without regard for the future of the coach, coming into the game knowing full well the implications of their performance on Maguire’s tenure.

While they were missing a number of top-line players - including Adam Doueihi, James Tamou, Daine Laurie and Moses Mbye - they were made to look like a reserve grade team against a side that has struggled to score points for the past few seasons.

According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Maguire remained calm in the sheds after full-time and thanked the players who were moving on at the end of the year.

When asked in the post-match press conference if he was the right man for the job, Maguire said: “Ah, yep. Yep.”

“I know exactly where the team is going. The organisation knows where the team is going. We have to make sure we continue to be disciplined about what we’re trying to build here. Changing teams and changing pathways of clubs takes a little bit of time. It doesn’t mean you can’t get better performances than that on the park, I acknowledge that. But it’s about continually just sticking to the path of where we’re going with this group.

“People continually refer to 10 years (missing the finals), but it’s about the future and where we’re going. You saw a lot of youth out there. We had 12 blokes on the sideline, we will be a different team next year. We have the makings of what it takes to move forward in the competition and grow the team.”

Maguire has blamed the decisions of Ivan Cleary for his team’s failures during his three-year tenure. He now has an inferior success rate to Jason Taylor when he was sacked after three rounds in 2018.

Former Sharks premiership-winning coach Shane Flanagan is looking for a job but there doesn’t appear to be much appetite from the Tigers to consider him. Other options include Penrith assistant coach Cameron Ciraldo, former Cowboys coach Paul Green, ex-Sharks coach John Morris, St Helens coach Kristian Woolf and Catalans coach Steve McNamara.

Wayne Bennett is off contract but insists he is returning to live in Queensland next year.

Who is the worst option amongst the darlings suggested by the media? My money will be on the club taking them

The reality is we are a team with a bottom 4 roster missing our best two players in Douihei and Laurie. That was a straight up FU if I’ve ever seen one. The clubs has to work out why these players care so little about the club and their fans. That’s the issue. Madge or not they don’t care.

I believe they do care, they care about the long term future of the club. Short term pain for long term gain. Maguire goes and a new era begins.

I don't care if we had the worst coach in the history of sport, there is no excuse for players tanking. Even if you don't like your coach, you put in for your own self respect, for your team mates, and for your enormous pay cheque.

It’s time for the annual WT’s post season melodrama. 3 years in a row we have had someone walk out. 2018 it was Cleary, 2019 Matterson and 2021 Aloiai. We’re gunning for 4 years in a row. Whose it gonna be???

Nofa?

I would be chucking the kitchen sink at Bennett

Moving to Qld and nothing short of an act of god, if there is such a thing will change that.

Cya Madge. Love your passion but you have no idea tactically and have no idea how to motivate players.

I will be filthy if we sack Madge. He's gone about things the right way, and got rid of much of the dead wood. We now have the youngest squad in the NRL, but he won’t get his fair chance with them.

This will condemn us to a dark future, because no coach will have the balls to take a long term approach.

We'll no doubt bring in some unproven coach, we'll go on a spending spree, see our young blokes head off to the Roosters, and in 3 years time we'll start all over again, with another buggered salary cap.

Alternatively, Madge continues the downward trend of the last three years and all the young fellas leave and we have nothing

Bring in a coach who's smart enough to use the young talent we have but actually knows how to coach and can maybe sign a decent experienced player

I would sack Madge for only two reasons:
1. If stefano, Doueihi, Blore and Laurie say it's not going well. Judging by the way they play, I'd say they're engaged and enjoying playing for Madge. Who cares what the rest of them think?

2. The rumours about players not wanting to sign because of him are true. He's signed decent players and also missed out on a few so I'm not sure if that's correct or not, but I'm sure administrators would speak to agents and would know where it stands there.

Otherwise, I'm not sacking him. That performance was appalling and this season has been disappointing. I had us at about 10-14th this year, so to me it's not our position, it's the lack of grit and competitiveness. I was hoping to see some progress. So on field performance is a negative.

BUT you have to consider the whole club and the perception of the club. It's just not the right time to sack a coach. He's halfway through redeveloping the team, there's so much media on us now and if our next coach doesn't get it right then our reputation will be even more shot.

Madge is doing the right thing by the club in the way he's redoing the roster. You can't sack him at this stage. Our club looks better if they give him more time, it shows coaches that we stick by our coach and give them time. I don't think it's fair if we sack him now.

Consider: we sack Madge this year and our next coach bombs next year. Where are we, where do we go? It's a rebuild again. Madge is building the team the way he wants it so you judge him on where we're at next year. No improvement? he's gone. It would be incompetence to get rid of him now given we only recently re-signed him, presumably signing off on what he was building.

and so they should. if we're going to sack Maguire we need to get on with it.

The writing is on the wall whether it’s rightly or wrongly it hasn’t worked with Madge, he’s taken the playing group backwards. When the journo‘s are openly saying the reason we can’t attract talent is the coach that’s it you’re done. We all know for all the rubbish they write this part at least is reasonably documented. We have to move quickly not a huge fan of Flanno, Morris & Ciraldo are really the only other options it will be one of those 3 I’m guessing.

Wake up mate I said they are openly saying it, they have been for some time it’s pretty clear Madge can’t attract players if you can’t see that you’re asleep.

Tell me ALL the players all the other coaches attracted over the years....
By my count, It's about 3-4 Top line Signings (In 22 Years)

Not counting the good fortune signings like Scott Prince and Pat Richards... Even with those, It's not 10!!

In 22 years - We haven't signed 10 top line players....
Change the coach as often as you like - You can't (and won't) change that.
