The chances of Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire landing the vacant North Queensland Cowboys coaching role are negative, no and less than zero.
It won’t be happening.

Maguire has told Fox Sports he is committed to the Tigers, has made no approach to North Queensland and wants to win a premiership at Concord.

“I am 100 per cent committed to Wests Tigers,” Maguire said.

“I want to remain a part of this club building towards a premiership.

“I have no idea where any of the speculation has come from but let’s put it to bed.

“I am focused on the Wests Tigers. I have a contract here until the end of next year.”

Why would the North Queensland Cowboys sack a hard-edged, authoritarian, take-no-nonsense coach in Paul Green and replace him with a virtual carbon copy?

The logic of it is so stupid only the most easily-led, naive types would fall for it.

That’s not to say somebody claiming to represent Maguire hasn’t picked up the telephone to someone at the Cowboys and thrown a dart at the board.

After all, the Cowboys are a powerful club rich in resources and boast a roster brimming with talent.

And this is rugby league, where contracts and rules are broken and rewritten every other day.

The Cowboys committee tasked with drawing up a short-list of candidates for the vacant head coaching position consists of long-time club power broker Peter Parr, chief executive Jeff Reibel and chief operating officer Micheal Luck.

This trio are scheduled to meet on Wednesday to shorten the list of applicants.

There could be six, seven, maybe eight names on the Cowboys short list.

Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire will not be one of those names.

Besides the fact Maguire is signed until the end of next season, the Cowboys have no intention to approach a coach under contract.

North Queensland are livid at the suggestion they’ve even been linked to the coach known as Madge.

Go back to when they appointed Paul Green at the end of 2013.

Neil Henry was sacked mid-season, Ian Millward took over as the interim coach and then the Cowboys went through a thorough process before appointing Green.

Given the fact Green then won the club its maiden premiership in 2015, it’s easy to understand why the Cowboys will follow the same process.

Parr, Reibel and Luck will draw up an initial short list on Wednesday.

They’ll then narrow this list to most likely three candidates over the coming weeks.

These candidates will then be interviewed by a panel of club power brokers which may even end up containing the likes of a club legend such as Johnathan Thurston or Matt Scott.

Only then will the Cowboys land on their new head coach.

It won’t be Michael Maguire.

Of course Maguire is a premiership-winning coach who knows what it takes to build a roster, create culture and most importantly, win.

The Tigers do not want to let him go. He has no desire to leave the Wests Tigers.

And the Cowboys have no desire to approach a coach who is very similar to the one they just sacked.

**ARTICLE POSTED..so there is no need to give Pooper clicks..**

Good. That should put it to bed now.

But I am keen to see which journalists persist with the Madge rumour. If any do then most likely it was them who spread this crap in the first place

Who knows maybe Madge thinks the cowboys have a lot brighter future then the tigers I’ve heard players are sick of him carrying on screaming at them all the time anyway

What a hypocrite. This description fits 90% of the content Hooper writes.. Apart from this White Knighting effort.

Yea - who did you hear that off?

West’s Tigers seem to be asleep at the wheel. You don’t let a premiership winning coach who is doing a solid job with an average roster get past mid season without an extension. Every coach has to consider their future a year out as there are only so many jobs.

You don’t let good players hit the final year of their deals. You sign rookies on longer deals so that they are not peaking when they come off contract.

McIntyre is a perfect example the more games he plays the more he will cost the Tigers. Aloai, Blore, Mikalele, Nofa need to be signed before November deadline.

It’s all good creating cap space and signing players but we have to make sure we keep the good ones. The team has to be built around Aloai, Twal, Blore, Mikalele, Talau, Luciano, Nofa, Douhiei, Garner and supplemented with recruits. No point signing players and losing the ones we want to keep including the coach.

I’d like to know that as well....as well as what players are “tired” of being yelled at for subpar performances - whoever you are don’t let the door hit you on the arse on the way out......

Are you going to answer diedpretty's question above ? Exactly who told you the players are sick of him screaming at them all the time ? Put up or shut up !

The. calibre of candidates in the field is nowhere near that of the outgoing coach, a premiership winner.

Cowboys have to be disappointed with what is on offer.

What do you do?

A professional organisation does not leak confidential info unless it is deliberate.

Boohoo to them. If they didnt play like 💩 every second week then maybe Madge wouldn't have tell them how it is. I only took the yelling personally from the coach if i played poorly and didn't do what was asked. If i gave it my all then the coach could yell all he wanted as I knew it wasn't directed at me personally. Some soft players just can't handle the truth.

I just switch off, ignore it and continue to do what I am comfortable with. Much like the Wests Tigers dressing room.

Maybe switch the forum off for a few weeks or is this your kryptonite?

I thought I saw it somewhere lol

I thought I heard on NRL 360 that we are looking at extending Madge but not until the end of the year... If that's true I would be very disappointed.

IMO neither Green nor Payten quit mid season unless theyve got something in the can for 2021...Payton may not get another opportunity
BTW I thought his :thanks but no thanks" speech on NRL 360where he exposed all the Warriors flaws mid season was pretty poor form
Doesnt take much to work out hes Cowboys bound, and Green to Broncos.

Regarding recruitment and retention we’ve been asleep for bloody years. Madge should be locked away for another 3 year’s already. We are always reactive rather than proactive. Always.
