Maguire Signs Until End of 2023

Good news IMO. It obviously takes a while to turn things around at this club. Madge has been having crack at it, and this backing by the club should give him the confidence to keep it going, and alert the players they need to buy into a tougher environment or go elsewhere.

Smart decision. Next year is a write off, but a load of cap space opens after that.

If in the following 2 years we cannot recruit and the young talent does not develop, he should be shown the door.

An option in the clubs favour for another year would have been about perfect.

Doesn't it concern anyone that Maguire was shopping himself around earlier this year?
I was filthy with what Cleary did but the difference is the Panthers approached him not the other way around

That is not true. It was quickly shut down by the club and himself. They have offered him a 2-year extension and he has accepted it.

Coaches got sacked earlier in the year and the media looked to stir the pot by picking out the struggling teams and their coaches as possibilities.

As with anything reported by "newspapers" on coaches/players do we absolutely know this was the case.....

**and some believed** his delay in committing to the Tigers was due to potential interest in the Melbourne Storm job .........

I don't know about others but I am very happy here in my current job but I also occasionally look at the market to see what's what..... I don't have a problem but as I said we have no idea if that was the case or just a journalistic fishing expedition to put the boot into the WT again....

Not really. 5 head coaches sacked this year. Very limited job security at the best of times. I'd be exploring "what if" alternatives too.

Apparently Madge has verbally agreed to 2 year extension until 2023

Where is that information coming from?

Big Sports Breakfast and Telegraph

Thanks but i wouldnt believe DT in any circumstances the other mob i hope is more reliable

BSB is owned by Tabcorp and don’t have journalists (either do the other mob haha) so they read the paper before going on air and run a story.

Laurie Daly though not a journo would have a fair idea what's going on around the traps

For me this is excellent news. For the first time in a long time I can see a future.

- Firstly he is recruiting youth and tonnes of it. We really as a club fell off a cliff after we lost the 'Big 4' and really struggled to introduce, value or maintain our junior pathways. Madge is investing heavily in these pathways and is rebuilding the brand holistically.
- We are aiming for big fish and even though we haven't landed anyway we are in there swinging. While we didn't land LM and we may not land AC we are in the running which is something we had failed to do for a fair while. Superstar talent at an appropriate age.
- Removing the soft underbelly. While many think madges hard-nosed approach turns players off I would ask are they the players you want. For me im sick of being bullied in the middle, I'm sick of being all flare and zero substance. I agree last season was a failure but I also think there were some signs early that we were heading in the right direction we just couldnt maintain it. We will better this year for it.
- As many have mentioned i just want a period of stability. MAdge is locked in, and you know he will work hard, Hartigan and that storm lad are here, The COE is coming soon a lot of positives. Hopefully, we can turn it around on the field.

Good Post and exactly what we needed to do in the off season let the Players know the Club/Supporters back the direction of the Coach. Now i know not all will agree however what's a better option currently change again and again????

The 2 year extension will prove weather we can make finals with an improved Roster long term, if anyone thinks there is a magic fix for 2021 with Packer/Reynolds/Mybe on the books don't have high expectations till 2022.

The new COE should come in by the end of next season and if will something as well to attract playing talent looking for a better opportunity.

Madge has faults as well he might not be the long term fix but he does want to turn the club around, will put my trust in him and judge him more closer in 2022 for now.

Good news, Packer, JRey and even Mbye are our problem contracts tying up $2m+ per season, tough to work miracles with that constraint. Those involved in signing these deals are long gone but their memory lingers on
This way Madge gets to see what he can do at least beyond the first couple and stability can never be a bad thing, especially when we will be looking to spend some of this on their replacements

Media . LOL Murdoch you mean ! If there is no news make it up and use words like “I believe” After a 3 paragraph insinuation that what thier saying is fact , where it’s just opinion at best , and completely made up click bait they don’t even believe themselves ,at worst .

So true.
You can't criticize Madge too harshly for loosing with a 7 million dollar cap.

Ofcourse the usual exclamation of Why Chris McQueen after such a neck injury, why Mbye (in fairness to Mbye, unlike Packer and JRey he has been picked on the field). At least they will be off the books.

While it hasn't worked miracles for Newcastle, Picking top shelf players and paying top shelf money for them does seem a better way to go. I doubt anyone would want Russell Packer for $600k over Klemmer for 1M. No matter what, Klemmer takes the field. For all the criticism of Mitchell Pearce, who would not rather him then JRey. Sure, it's overs. But at least pay overs for players you will actually want playing on the field. Big17, 700K benchwarmers HAS TO END.

The only problem I have with resigning Madge is his constant failure to sign any quality players , I don’t know if it’s the club or Madge but it’s becoming a massive problem , we need to sign someone soon or it’s going to be the same old story again next year . We should forget about JAC and go all out for young burton and a good backrower

Not fair on Madge. Our Tigers have been the soft basketcase for the best part of 20 years.

He is the only one who has been willing to work towards a true culture shift. Allowing Benji to go is testiment to his determination.

Lets see how the club handles recruitment and retention for the next 12 to 18 months.

We need to stuck solid as fans.

Great news IMO.

Always next year has extended to next next year...cool bananas..

Madge has verbally agreed to stay on with the WT.

I hope he hasn't signed a Heads of Agreement with us.

Maybe we need to start having people actually sign contracts instead of verbally agreeing to everything

Who keeps forgetting to bring a pen lol

That simple, no excuses

So we can’t start all over again?

Well that’s rewarding mediocrity... something this club does well ! Maybe some runs on the board before rewarding this smells like desperation once again ..

Sounds like supporting stability and having belief. Something we've missed for a long time.
