Wests Tigers suffered a 20-12 loss to Manly Sea Eagles tonight in round one of the Toyota Cup competition at the Sydney Football Stadium.
Manly opened the scoring in the third minute through a try to second-rower Mitchell Jowett from a pass from dummy half. Jowett ran 10 metres to score under the posts. It came off the back of a penalty.
Full-back William Hopoate converted the try for a 6-0 lead.
Wests Tigers full-back Jake Mullaney had supporters on their feet in the 12th minute when he defused a bomb and raced 20 metres before being tackled. Manly were then penalised for holding down too long in the tackle.
From the ensuring set, Wests Tigers opened their account when a fine grubber kick by former centre turn five-eighth Bodie Clark saw the ball bounce up perfectly for centre Jake Clarke to score his first try of the season.
Mullaney converted from out wide for a 6-6 scoreline after 15 minutes.
Two minutes later, Mullaney put through a grubber kick for winger Sama Sauvao but he forced the ball dead in trying to get a hand on it.
Wests Tigers had a chance to score in the 26th minute when a pass by Mullaney had winger Monikura Tikinau unmarked but the pass went into touch.
Second-rower Joel Wisbey, who played centre in last year's grand final, pulled off a trysaving tackle 15 metres out from the Wests Tigers line when he forced the ball loose off Ryan Lippiatt.
Lippiatt did get across the line in the 35th minute to score out wide,. Hopoate missed the conversion for a 10-6 scoreline. The score remained that way until half-time.
2nd Half
Wests Tigers started the second half off on the perfect note when Wisbey hit a hole up the middle to race 20 metres before finding interchange player Dean Parata backing up in support to score under the posts. Mullaney converted the try for a 12-10 lead after 44 minutes.
Wests Tigers forward Junior Roqica was penalised for a double movement in the 58th minute after putting the ball down next to the posts.
Manly regained the lead when hooker and captain Liam Higgins burrowed over from dummy half. Hopoate converted for a 16-12 scoreline.
The Sea Eagles secured victory when winger Michael Oldfield leapt high above a standing Tikinau to score off a bomb by Gary Riccardi. The try was not converted for a 20-12 scoreline. The score remained that way until full-time.
