NRL clubs are already starting to discuss outlaying up to $600,000 a season to sign Wests Tigers and NSW Origin prop Aaron Woods.

But there may be a hitch.

The Daily Telegraph understands several clubs, one said to be grand finalists Manly, have held internal talks about signing Woods, who comes off contract at the Tigers after next season.

However, Woods, despite being just 22, has bad knees and recently underwent stem cell surgery.

He didn’t play again after this year’s Origin series and ruled himself out of contention for the World Cup in England.

Woods, though, is one of the game’s premier front-rowers. He is robust, tough and a player who will only improve.

He is on a deal worth about $300,000, but that could nearly double by the end of 2014.

The only issue is how Woods’ knees will stand-up long-term.

Woods loves the Tigers and grew up above a newsagent on Norton St, Leichhardt. He would be reluctant to leave.

But in modern football, money talks and if a club like Manly could offer $600,000 a year, it would be difficult for the Tigers to keep him.

The Sea Eagles will be without props Joe Galuvao (retired), George Rose (Melbourne) and Brent Kite (Penrith) for next season and will be looking to bolster their line up.

Co-skipper Jason King will return in 2014 from injury, but his future beyond next season is undecided.

Woods could make a huge impact at Brookvale.

When NSW legend Steve Roach was asked about Woods before his Origin debut, he was unequivocal in his praise.

"He’s the type of bloke who’ll get in there and he’ll be in the Blues set-up for the next eight years. You watch him go," Roach said.

Woods should be the Tigers #1 priority. Sign him long term during the off season to avoid crap like this surfacing and pushing up his price tag. If we lose Woods we'd be taking 10 steps back after so many years bringing him through the system for someone else to reap the benefits. He's our best front rower and potentially a future captain. Get onto this Mayer.

I'm sure we will not lose woods, I'm sure the tigers will have plenty of money to keep woods as they have said earlier they will be in the market with about a million I'm sure some of that will go to woods, it would be very silly of them not to try everything in their power to keep him

can't nurture/develop there own juniors, so once again they go and throw massive money at a player.
I do hope Aaron Woods remains at wests-tigers, if the amount is true, you would have to think of the following, which could influence the final decision:
1.twice as much as currently on
2 limited life in footy,
3\. being part of a team that consistently makes the finals.

100% as stevetiger said 600k for a front rower is just to much i wouldn't pay more then 400-500k for any forward in the comp. For 600k i would let him go for 400-450k i would try my best to nab him.Any way we have 1000000's of Forwards coming up Ava Seumanufagai,Nathan Brown,Jack Buchanan,James Gavet Ben Murdoch-Masila,And experienced ones as well, Keith Galloway,Adam Blair.And those are just the Props. Don't get me wrong Woodsy is our best prop and is only young but 600k is way to much. and if the Sea Beagles want him for 2013 they can pay us a hefty transfer fee.

Would like to know how bad his knee really is. He is a great player but I would rather let him go than pay overs for an injury prone player. I hope our management team makes the right call.

I think Wayne Bennett is right props have a limit to the amount you can pay them. Yes they are important to have good ones but they are not usually match winners.

No but seriously 600k isn't going to be the crazy figure it used to be once the salary cap has stopped getting raised. It's more likely 450k was so I'd pay it for our best forward and future captain.

More likely it's 150,000 and they want to bump it up to 300,000.
Honestly don't think he'd leave.
How can he be injury prone? He's had 1 injury in pre season in the last 2 years and they decided to perform proper surgery when we were out of finals contention with Rowdy.

How people rate him a future captain annoys me. His ambition growing up was to play for Manly. Our next captain should be a junior who lives and breathes the club. Curtis Sironen for me.

And a 600k, FW with already bad knees…? PASS. He's actually slow.

part of the current game… The smarter clubs know under the current system they are better off poaching everyone else's juniors than spending too much coin in this area.

Hopefully the NRL implements the new Salary Cap Guidelines for the 2015 Season to see an end to this rubbish!
